  • The study involved determination of resistance levels of spider mites ta argano-phosphates using topical application and slide dip techniques; laboratory serening tests of alternative acaricides using an O/P resistant strain and a field trial of the screened materials. 1. Strains of Tetranychus were from Timaru(TR), Havelock Narth (HNR), Lincaln (LN). Germany (GR, GN). Comparisons of the resistant strains and normal strains at the LD50 and LC50 levels were as follows : (a) Using the topical application tochnique; with Parathian. resistant levels of the GR. TR and HNR strains of T. urticae were respeativuly, 1035. 484 and 452 times as resistant' as the LN strain. (b) Using the slide dip technique; with Phosdrin, resistant of GR, TR and HNR strains of T. urticae were 635, 274 and 266 times greater respeativuly, than the GN strain. 2. The laboratory sereaning tests were carried out far their contact plus stomach and residual effect to assess the toxicities of eleven alternative materials which would be used far control of O/P resistant strain of T. urticae. The acaricide groups represented were 3 organo-chlorines (Spidex, Kelthane and C 8514), 2 nitrophenyls (UC 19786 and Morocide), 2 cyclic carbonates(Eradex and Morestan). I carbamate (UC2004 7A), 1 mixture of carbamate and orano-chlorine and 2 other chemicals (C 8677 and M2527). From all acaricide tested. Kelthane and Morocide were the most effective, folowed by Spidex and M2527. Morestan, C8514. C8677 and RS 143 were intermediate, but Eradex, UC 19786 and UC 20046A were poor. 3, The number of sapmles required for estimation of the population in the field evaluation of acaricidal effects was one giving the highest practical precision. It was decided, after preliminary sampling trials. to use samples of 30 leaves per replicate which gave a $5.7\%$ standard error. 4. In the field trials, Morocide applied at the $0.05\%\;and\; 0.04\%$ a. i. conc. to black currant trees gave excellent control of O/P resistant population of T. urticae for about 12 days, but Morocide 0.025 and Kel thane $0.02\%$ a. i. cone. gave efficient control for about 6 days. In other words. first applications of Kel thane ane Moroeide gave very high degrees of control of O/P resistant population of the two-spotted spider mite. However, the results indicate that secondary application would sometimes be necessary. There was no foliage damage of black Currants and strawberries by either acaricides at the concentrations used. • In order to ascertain the practical possibility of home made retort pouches for production of retort pouch foods in factory, two kinds of retortable pouches, i. e. 3 ply film (polyester film/Al. foil/casting polypropylene) and 4 ply film(polyester film/Al. foil/nylon/casting poll·propylene) were developed in Korea, and then, their physical properties, such as physical strength, heat resistance during thermal processing and preservability of foods and sanitary safety, were tested and compared with the foreign made pouches. The results obtained were summarized as follows. a. The physical strength of home made retort pouches in processing model foods(soybean oil 5 %, acetic acid 2%, starch 5 % and water to 100 %) was equal to that of foreign made pouches at accelerated examination condition($38^{\circ}C$, 98 % RH). But the lamination strength of home made products was a little bit superior to that of foreign made products. b. Home made retort pouches(SAMA-4 ply and SAMA-3 ply pouch) packed with rice or curry was possible to bear the thermal processing at $135^{\circ}C$ and shelf-life was one year or more at ambient temperature($20^{\circ}C$). c. Sanitary safety test showed that these home made retort pouches were acceptable comparing to the regulation recommended by the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs.

  • In this study, the Warm-Mix Asphalt was prepared using a modified Sulfur Binder mixed with an additive of a polymer component in sulfur, which is an industrial by-product generated in the crude oil refining process. The dynamic stability and durability characteristics of the prepared Warm-Mix Asphalt was evaluated by the indirect tensile strength, the tensile strength ratio before and after water immersion and freezing-thawing, and the dynamic stability by wheel tracking test. The Warm-Mix Asphalt Mixtures using Modified Sulfur Binder has a tensile strength ratio before and after water immersion of 0.88, which is about 1.13 times that of the Warm-Mix formed modified Asphalt, and the tensile strength ration before and after freezing-thawing is also 0.82, thus, all tensile strength ratios satisfied the KS quality standard value of 0.75 or more. The indirect tensile strength was 1.6MPa which was twice the KS quality standard value of 0.8MPa, and about 1.24 times higher than that of normal heated asphalt 1.29MPa. In addition, the dynamic stability by the wheel tracking test was 14,075 times/mm, which was about 15 times higher than that of normal heated asphalt and about 3 times higher than that of the Warm-Mix formed modified Asphalt, showing excellent resistance to plastic deformation such as fatigue cracks.

  • A study on the green ship design for Ultra Large Container Ship (ULCS, 18,000 TEU Class Container Ship) was performed based on the four step procedures of the initial design and hull form optimization to maximize economic and propulsive performance. The first, the design procedure for ULCS was surveyed with economic evaluation considering environmental rules and regulations. The second, the characteristics of single and twin skeg container ships were investigated in view of initial design and performances. The third, the hull form optimization for single and twin skeg ships with the same dimensions was conducted to improve the resistance and propulsive performances at design draught and speed by several variations and the results of the optimization were verified by numerical calculations of CFD and model test. The last, for the estimated operating profile of draught and speed, the hull forms of single and twin sked ships were optimized by CFD. From this study, the methodologies to optimize the hull form of ULCS were proposed with considerations during the green ship design and the improvement of the energy efficiency for the optimized hull forms was confirmed by the proposed formula of the total energy considering design conditions, operating profile and fuel oil consumption.

  • To prevent loss of hair protein during hair washing process by water through, a shield coating the pathway of water molecules was studied. Hydrophobic virgin hair, hydrophilic hair, which was damaged only methyleicosanoic acid (18-MEA) on the surface, and a repaired hair re-bound 18-MEA, were prepared and water mass changes by as heat were measured. Results showed that hydrophobic hairs followed bi-exponential function of 39 s and 151 s and other two hairs exhibited fast- and mono-exponential decay with 83 s, reflecting the extraction of water molecules without any resistance at the hydrophobic surface. On the assumption that hydrophobic surface resists an extraction of protein in water during the wash, the protein concentrations were compared from the hair of hydrophobic and hydrophilic surface. The extracted hair proteins were 179 and 148 ㎍/mL from the hair coated with hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) and hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), respectively. This study suggested that hydrophobic coating on the hair surface could be used to prevent protein loss in wash, represented by LFM. In conclusion, this research provides some useful information to contribute to the development of hair washing products that can prevent protein loss in the cleaning process by granting hydrophobic coatings.

  • In this paper, a manufacturing method of an anti-glare cover glass on LCD for outdoor use is proposed. The main specification of cover glass is hardness and anti-glare. Hardness is achieved by using the tempered glass, and anti-glare(AG) film is laminated to meet anti-glare specification no the tempered glass. However, the AG film is difficult to maintain the AG performance continuously because the abrasion resistance of the PET film itself is as weak as about 3H. Therefore, a novel production procedure using screen printing method is proposed. The proposed coating is implemented by applying $ZnO-B_2O_3-SiO_2$ powder on glass surface and the glass is made with enhanced hardness through tempering process. In order to apply the ZBS powder uniformly on the glass surface, a screen printing process is used. The main parameters to be considered in screen printing are the oil concentration and mesh opening size. Because the amount of ZBS powder applied to the printing process is controlled by these two parameters, the correlativity is confirmed through the experiments. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed method, the haze, surface roughness and transmittance are selected as the performance index and are compared with the AG film. As a result of comparison, it is verified that the transmittance of the proposed tempered glass is 83.1%, which is slightly lower than 89.5% of AG film, but the hardness is more than double to 7H.

  • Background: This study investigated the anti-obesity effect of the flavonoid rich fraction (FRF) and its constituent, rutin obtained from the leaf of Morus alba L., on the lipid accumulation mechanism in 3T3-L1 adipocyte and C57BL/6 mouse models. Methods and Results: In Oil Red O staining, FRF (1,000 ㎍/㎖) treatments showed inhibition rate of 35.39% in lipid accumulation compared to that in the control. AdipoRedTM assay indicated that the triglyceride content in 3T3-L1 adipocytes treated with FRF (1,000 ㎍/㎖) was reduced to 23.22%, and free glycerol content was increased to 106.04% that of the control. FRF and its major constituent, rutin affected mRNA gene expression. Rutin contributed to the inhibition of Sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c) gene expression, and inhibited the transcription factors SREBP-1c, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ), CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α (C/EBPα), fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). In addition, the effect of FRF administration on obesity development in C57BL/6 mice fed high-fat diet (HFD) was investigated. FRF suppressed weight gain, and reduced liver triglyceride and leptin secretion. FRF exerted potential anti-inflammatory effects by improving insulin resistance and adiponectin levels, and could thus be used to help counteract obesity. The mRNA expressions of PPAR-γ, FAS, ACC, and CPT-1 were determined in liver tissue. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis was also performed to evaluate the expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α in epididymal adipose tissue. Compared to the control group, mice fed the HFD showed the up-regulation in PPAR-γ, FAS, IL-6, and TNF-α genes, and down-regulation in CPT1 gene expression. FRF treatement markedly reduced the expression of PPAR-γ, FAS, IL-6, and TNF-α compared to those in HFD control, whereas increased the expression level of CPT1. Conclusions: These results suggest that the FRF and its major active constituent, rutin, can be used as effective anti-obesity agents.

  • International oil prices are expected to increase from $85 a barrel this year to up to $100 a barrel in the second half of the year; this is likely to increase orders for offshore plants in the global market. One main characteristic of offshore plants is that a large helideck is located on the top side, and aluminum alloys are used as the basic material of the structure for weight reduction and corrosion resistance. Shipowners are increasing the size of helicopters to quickly evacuate lives in the event of an emergency, and the safety use load of devices that can stably secure helicopters to the deck is also required to increase. Owing to the nature of the aluminum material, the structural strength caused by welding is greatly reduced; therefore, the fixing device must be designed by embedding it in the deck and fixing it with bolts. In this study, a model applying aluminum alloy 6082-T6 was developed to develop a helicopter fastening device that can be used for large helidecks (diameter = 28 m). The developed item was verified through nonlinear structural strength calculation to satisfy the load used for the actual fastening condition. The load condition with a 45° showed a lower ultimate strength than the 90° case owing to local plastic collapse. The nonlinear structural collapse behavior showed a result similar to that of the experimental test. The main contents derived from this study are considered to be reference materials when evaluating the structural strength of similar aluminum equipment.

  • Philippines is the second world supplier of coconut by-products. As its first major genomics project, the Philippine Genome Center program for Agriculture (PGC-Agriculture) took the challenge to sequence and assemble the whole coconut genome. The project aims to provide advance genetics tools for our collaborating coconut researchers while taking the opportunity to initiate local capacity. Combination of different NGS platforms was explored and the Philippine 'Catigan Green Dwarf' (CATD) variety was selected with the breeders to be the crop's reference genome. A high quality genome assembly of CATD was generated and used to characterize important genes of coconut towards the development of resilient and outstanding varieties especially for added high-value traits. The talk will present the significant results of the project as published in various papers including the first report of whole genome sequence of a dwarf coconut variety. Updates will include the challenges hurdled and specific applications such as gene mining for host insect resistance and screening for least damaged coconuts (thus potentially insect resistant varieties). Genome-wide DNA markers as published and genes related to coconut oil qualitative/quantitative traits will also be presented, including initial molecular/biochemical studies that support nutritional and medicinal claims. A web-based genome database is currently built for ease access and wider utility of these genomics tools. Indeed, a major milestone accomplished by the coconut genomics research team, which was facilitated with the all-out government support and strong collaboration among multidisciplinary experts and partnership with advance research institutes.

  • Effects of the various dietary additives on growth and tolerance of abalone Haliotis discus hannai to the stresses were determined in the 16-week feeding trial. Seventy juvenile (an initial body weight of 4.2 g) abalone per container were randomly distributed into 21, 50 L plastic rectangular containers each. The six kinds of experimental diets were prepared: control (CON) with no additive, by-product of green tea (BPG), extract of figs (EF), extract of green tea (EG), commercially available product of Hearok (PH), and Haematococcus (HC). In addition, dry sea tangle (ST) was prepared to compare the efficiency of the experimental diets. Fishmeal, soybean meal and shrimp head meal were used as the protein source, and dextrin, sea tangle powder and wheat flour, and soybean oil and fish oil were used as the carbohydrate and lipid sources, respectively in the experimental diets. The experimental diets were fed to abalone once a day at a satiation level with a little leftover. The feeding trial lasted for 16 weeks. At the end of the 16-week feeding trial, abalone was exposed to the different types of stresses (air exposure, and sudden changes of rearing temperature and salinity). Survival of abalone fed the sea tangle was highest. However, weight gain of abalone fed the EF, EG and PH diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the BPG diet or dry sea tangle. Shell length of abalone fed the all experimental diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that of abalone fed the dry sea tangle. Accumulated mortality of abalone fed the sea tangle was low when exposed to the different types of stresses. Also, relatively low mortality was achieved in abalone fed the HC and EF diets. In considering these results, it can be concluded that the various sources of additives is effective to improve production of abalone, and Haematococcus and extract of figs can be considered as dietary additives to improve resistance of abalone against the different types of stresses.
