One of the most challenging issues in the oil and gas industry is corrosion assessment and management in subsea structures or equipment. At present, almost all steel pipelines are sensitive to corrosion in harsh working environments, particularly in salty water and sulphur ingress media. Nowadays, the most commonly practiced solution for a damaged steel pipe is to entirely remove the pipe, to remove only a localized damaged section and then replace it with a new one, or to cover it with a steel patch through welding, respectively. Numerous literatures have shown that fiber-reinforced polymer-based composites can be effectively used for steel pipe repairs. Considerable research has also been carried out on the repair of corroded and gouged pipes incorporated with hybrid natural fiber-reinforced composite wraps. Currently, further research in the field should focus on enhanced use of the lesser and highly explored hybrid-biocomposite material for the development in corrosion prevention. A hybrid-biocomposite material from renewable resource based derivatives is cost-effective, abundantly available, biodegradable, and an environmentally benign alternative for corrosion prevention. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review and to bridge the gap by developing a new hybrid-biocomposite with superhydrophobic surfaces.

Most oil and gas reservoirs, which have some light hydrocarbon components, show sensitive phase behavior in response to changes in the composition of the internal fluid. When evaluating and developing plans for oil and gas fields, flash calculation, PVT analysis, and saturation-property calculation are necessary for analyzing reservoir characteristics and pipeline flows. In general, the determination of saturation properties such as dew point and bubble point is considered a difficult task because of the poor convergence of the calculation methods. In this study, several new initial-value-guessing methods and root-finding methods are proposed; parametric analysis were carried out to verify the improvement in convergence. Finally, these new ideas and methods were successfully applied to the new GUI based multi-phase behavior simulator.

Subsea pipelines have an important role in the overall tasks of offshore oil and gas production but arc exposed to various hazards with high potential risks of damage resulting in serious economic loss and impact on ocean environment. In this paper, the dynamic free span is analysed, which is one of main risk factors against the safety of subsea pipelines and the allowable length of dynamic free span which is important for the design of subsea pipelines is determined. The allowable free span length is examined by considering the relationship between vortex shedding frequency and natural frequency of pipeline free span, and the variation of the allowable length is analysed for different boundary conditions of pipe ends. The free span is regarded as a beam on elastic foundations and the boundary condition of the beam is generalized by modelling as restrained by linear and rotational spring at each end. A non-dimensionalized curve is obtained to facilitate the determination of exact allowable length of dynamic free span for subsea pipelines and is applied to the pipelines which is to be installed in the gas fields of the south of East Sea of Korea.
The splash zone is the most corrosive area of the marine environment, and the corrosion of steel structures exposed in this area is a serious concern. DH36 steel is one of most commonly used steels for offshore oil platforms in China, and its corrosion behaviour in splash zones was studied in this paper. Polarization curves were obtained from the corroded steel exposed in this area while the morphologies and rusts of the rust steel were characterized using scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Double rust layers were formed in the splash zone. The inner layer contained magnetite and fine flaky lepidocrocite, and the outer layer was composed of accumulated flaky lepidocrocite and a small amount of goethite. In the wet period, the iron dissolved and reacted with lepidocrocite, and magnetite appeared, while the magnetite was oxidized to lepidocrocite again during the dry period. Electrochemical reduction and chemical oxidization cycled in intermittent wetting and drying periods, and magnetite and lepidocrocite were involved in the reduction reaction, leading to serious corrosion.

Subsea oil and gas exploration is increasingly moving into deeper water depths, and typically, subsea pipelines operate under high pressure and temperature conditions. Owing to the difference in these components, the axial force in the pipe is accumulated. When a pipeline is operated at a high internal pressure and temperature, it will attempt to expand and contract for differential temperature changes. Typically, the line is not free to move because of the plane strain constraints in the longitudinal direction and soil friction effects. For a positive differential temperature, it will be subjected to an axial compressive load, and when this load reaches a certain critical value, the pipe may experience vertical (upheaval buckling) or lateral (snaking buckling) movements that can jeopardize the structural integrity of the pipeline. In these circumstances, the pipeline behavior should be evaluated to ensure the pipeline structural integrity during operation in those demanding loading conditions. Performing this analysis, the correct mitigation measures for thermal buckling can be considered either by accepting bar buckling but preventing the development of excessive bending moment or by preventing any occurrence of bending.
The domestic demand of natural gas has increased continuously due to the sudden rise of oil price and regulations on greenhouse gas to global warming. In order to improve the supply security of natural gas market in Korea, the agreement on supply of pipeline natural gas (PNG) in Russia was signed between Gazprom and Korea Gas Corporation in 2008. If the supply plan of Russian natural gas is realized, underground storage facilities would be required in order to balance supply and demand of natural gas because the gas demand is concentrated in the winter. This study investigated the safety of the storage facility in quantitative way considering several design parameters such as gas pressure, depth of the storage cavern, rock condition and in-situ horizontal stress ratio. Two dimensional stress analyses were conducted using axi- symmetry condition to examine the behavior of cavern depending upon suggested design parameters. Results showed that the factor of safety, defined as the ratio of 'shear strength'/'shear stress', was largely affected by the depth, rock class and gas pressure but was insensitive to the coefficient of lateral pressure(Ko).

This paper aims at presenting bunkering educational programs for LNG fueled ship taking into consideration existing similar education programs and safety systems at the international level in order to enhance both seafarers' and vessels' safety. Heavy fuel oil has typically been used as fuel of ship propulsion. The competitiveness of the fuel oil is recently getting weak in terms of cost and environmental aspects. Liquefied natural gas is introduced for ship propulsion in the maritime field as a new energy source replacing heavy fuel oil. In order to prepare for installation and operation of LNG fueled propulsion ship on board, International Maritime Organization has discussed this subject for about 10 years. As a result of the discussion on such ships in IMO, the International Code of Safety for Ships Using Gases or Other Low-Flash-Point Fuels entered into force on the year 2015. International organizations and several countries therefore drives actively entire researches and other businesses with a view to providing equipment and system of LNG bunkering. The systems are divided into ship-to-ship transfer, terminal / pipeline-to-ship transfer and truck-to-ship transfer. By adopting transfer system of LNG bunkering, many human resources will be needed in these areas on scene as well as on managing, operating, trading, finance, design of LNG bunkering industries. LNG bunkering is just in the beginning stage. Hence, this paper reviews and proposes professional educational programs of LNG bunkering in consideration of technical aspects of the safety system of LNG bunkering based on the types of bunkering systems.
This paper deals with the survey of domestic hydrogen production, consumption, and distribution. The amount of domestic hydrogen production and consumption has not been identified, and we survey the amount of domestic hydrogen production and consumption by industries. The hydrogen production industries are classified into the oil industry, the petrochemical industry, the chemical industry, and the other industry. In 2004, the amount of domestic hydrogen production was 972,601 ton, which corresponded to 1.9% of the global hydrogen production. The oil industry produced 635,683 ton(65.4%), the petrochemical industry produced 241,970 ton(24.9%), the chemical industry produced 66,250 ton(6.8%), the other industry produced 28,698 ton(2.9%). The hydrogen consumptions of corresponding industries were close to the hydrogen productions of industries except that of the other industry. Most hydrogen was used as non-energy for raw materials and hydrogen additions to the process. Only 122,743 ton(12.6%) of domestic hydrogen was used as energy for heating boilers. In 2004, 47,948 ton of domestic hydrogen was distributed. The market shares of pipeline, tube trailers and cylinders were 84.4% and 15.6%, respectively. The purity of 31,848 ton(66.4%) of the distributed hydrogen was 99.99%, and 16,100 ton(33.6%) was greater than or equal to 99.999%. Besides domestic hydrogen, we also identify the byproduct gases which contain hydrogen. The iron industry produces COG( coke oven gas), BFG(blast furnace gas), and LDG(Lintz Donawitz converter gas) that contain hydrogen. In 2004, byproduct gases of the iron industry contained 355,000 ton of hydrogen.
The traditional feedstock for dimethyl ether (DME) has been natural gas obtained by pipeline from a nearby natural gas or oil field. This report focuses on other feedstock: Coal bed methane (CBM). The resource availability and suitability of CBM for DME manufacturing have been investigated. CBM in a short time has become an important industry, providing an abundant clean-burning fuel and also suggesting as a feedstock for gas industry. The use of CBM will have very little impact on the KOGAS' DME process design and economics up to 50 vol% of $CO_2$ in the CBM source. Many of the CBM sources in Asia are high in $CO_2$, but pose no difficulties for the KOGAS' DME plant. Since tri-reformer requires substantial $CO_2$ in its feed, no $CO_2$ removal from the CBM feed is needed. The $CO_2$ in the CBM means that less $CO_2$ needs to be recycled from the downstream in the process.
