The Relationship between Parent's and Offspring's Personality and Offspring's Psychological Adaptation (부모의 성격 및 자녀의 성격과 자녀의 심리적 적응 간의 관계)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between personality of parent and offspring, and offspring's psychological adaptation. Methods: We examined temperament and character of 65 parents and their offspring (measured using the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory and Temperament and Character Inventory) and offspring's internalizing (anxiety, depression) and externalizing (delinquency, hyperactivity) problems. Results: The internalizing problems of offspring were positively associated with harm avoidance (HA) of offspring and parent, and negatively associated with self-directedness (SD) of offspring and parent. The externalizing problems of offspring were positively associated with novelty seeking of offspring, and were predicted by SD of parent. The interaction between parent's HA and offspring's HA predicted higher levels of anxiety of offspring. Conclusion: The association between the offspring's personality and internalizing and externalizing problems can depend on the personality of the parent.

Association between Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences and Risk of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder in the Offspring

  • Objectives: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) of mothers may negatively affect the mental health of their offspring. Little is known about the intergenerational effect of maternal ACE on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the offspring. This study investigated the impact of maternal ACEs on PTSD in the offspring. Methods: A total of 156 mothers with children aged 13-18 years completed the Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children (DISC) Predictive Scales to determine the presence of psychiatric disorders in their offspring. The subjects completed the ACE questionnaire and the Early Trauma Inventory Self-Report-Short Form. Multivariable logistic regression was used to analyze the relationship between maternal ACEs and PTSD in the offspring. Results: Of the mothers, 23.7% had at least one ACE, and PTSD was reported in 21.8% of the offspring. The offspring of the mothers in the ACE group had a significantly higher rates of traumatic experiences and PTSD than the offspring of the mothers in the no ACE group. Maternal household dysfunction independently predicted offspring PTSD [odds ratio (OR)=3.008, p=0.05), and three or more maternal ACEs were significantly related to PTSD in the offspring (OR=10.613, p=0.025). Conclusion: Maternal ACEs have a significant impact on the risk of traumatic experiences and PTSD in the offspring. These findings suggest the presence of intergenerational transmissions by which maternal ACEs affect the mental health of the offspring.

Influence of Offspring on Quality of Life among Cancer Patients and Survivors: Results from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA), 2008-2011

  • Background: To examine whether offspring improve or reduce quality of life (QOL) among cancer patients and survivors. Materials and Methods: We used data from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA) from 2008 to 2011. There were 490 research subjects in our study: 245 cancer patients and survivors and 245 controls matched using propensity scores. Results: For cancer patients and survivors with no offspring, the QOL estimate was -2.831 lower (SE: 5.508, p-value: 0.623) than that of those with two offspring, while for those with five or more offspring, the QOL estimate was 7.336 higher (SE: 2.840, p-value: 0.036). For non-cancer patients and survivors with one child, the QOL estimate was -11.258 lower (SE: 2.430, p-value: 0.002) than that of those with two offspring, while for those with five or more offspring, the QOL estimate was -4.881 lower (SE: 2.484, p-value: 0.090). Conclusions: This article provides evidence for a beneficial effect of offspring upon QOL in cancer patients and survivors, indicating that offspring are important for them.

Fast Evolution by Multiple Offspring Competition for Genetic Algorithms

  • The premature convergence of genetic algorithms (GAs) is the most major factor of slow evolution of GAs. In this paper we propose a novel method to solve this problem through competition of multiple offspring of in dividuals. Unlike existing methods, each parents in our method generates multiple offspring and then generated multiple offspring compete each other, finally winner offspring become to real offspring. From this multiple offspring competition, our GA rarel falls into the premature convergence and easily gets out of the local optimum areas without negative effects. This makes our GA fast evolve to the global optimum. Experimental results with four function optimization problems showed that our method was superior to the original GA and had similar performances to the best ones of queen-bee GA with best parameters.

Growth Performance of Offspring from Selected and Non-Selected Brood Line of Red Sea Bream, Pagrus major

  • In the present study, growth performances of the offspring from selected brood line were compared to those of the offspring from non-selected brood line of red sea bream. Offspring groups were mass produced separately from two brood lines, selected and non-selected Korean strain. Selected brood line have been selected by fish size for four generations (upper 5∼30% per generation) and non-selected brood line is the second generation of wild population at south sea in Korea. There's no significant difference in body length between offspring from selected and non-selected brood line during early growing stage (until 96-days old). However, offspring from selected brood line had superior body weight growth than offspring from non-selected brood line. At sea cages rearing trials with communal stocking, Offspring from selected brood line showed significantly better performance in body weight, body length, weight gain, specific growth rate and feed consumption (but not in feed conversion ratio) than offspring from non-selected brood line. At 24 months old, offspring from selected brood line grew faster 1.10 times in body length and 1.41 times in body weight than offspring from non selected brood line. The response to selection when compared to a non-selected line is on average of 10% in weight per generation at 24 months old.

Effects of Offspring-Related Characteristics on Depressive Disorder among Cancer Patients and Survivors

  • Objective: To investigate the influence of offspring-related characteristics on the prevalence of depressive disorders among cancer patients and those who survived cancer for at least 45 years. Materials and Methods: Data were obtained from the Korean Longitudinal Study of Aging (KLoSA). To investigate the association between offspring and depressive disorder among cancer patients and survivors, we analyzed data from 292 cancer patients and survivors drawn from a total subject pool of 16,613 individuals at baseline. Results: According to our results, the odds ratio (OR) for subjects with five or more offspring developing depressive disorder was -0.794 (p-value: 0.039, SE: 0.329) compared with that of those with two offspring. In addition, the adjusted effect of the number of male and female offspring on the presence of depressive disorder showed that the OR for those with three or more female offspring for developing depressive disorder was -0.958 lower (SE: 0.305, p-value: 0.012) than it was for those with no female offspring. Conclusions: This article provides evidence for an association between offspring-related characteristics and depressive disorders among cancer patients and survivors. Therefore, offspring may be important contributors to the emotional status of cancer patients and survivors. Further study should precisely need to measure depressive disorders because of self-reported data.

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigate the correlations of malocclusion between the mother and the offspring and thus heritable features from mother to her offspring. Dental impression was taken of the both jaws of 73 mothers and their sons and 109 mothers and their daughters, and the measurement was obtained from the models. The correlation coefficient of the mesio-distal diameters of teeth and that of occlusion and arch variable was calculated from the mesurement. After the data was analyzed and estimated, the following results were obtained : 1. It was evident that the tooth size of the offspring was influenced from their mother. 2. It was evident that the occlusion, the arch size and shape of the offspring were influenced from their mother. 3. There was not the marked difference between the heredity of occlusion variable and arch variable on the mother-offspring relationship. 4. The correlation of the lower intercanine width and the lower available space discrepancy between the mother and the offspring were greatly influenced with the environmental factor.

Maternal caffeine consumption has irreversible effects on reproductive parameters and fertility in male offspring rats

  • Objective: Concerns are growing about the decrease in male reproductive health. Caffeine is one of the popular nutrients that has been implicated as a risk factor for infertility. In the present study, we examined whether in utero and lactational exposure to caffeine affects the reproductive function of the offspring of rats. Methods: Pregnant rats received caffeine via drinking water during gestation (26 and 45 mg/kg) and lactation (25 and 35 mg/kg). Body and reproductive organ weight, seminiferous tubule diameter, germinal epithelium height, sperm parameters, fertility rate, number of implantations, and testosterone level of the offspring were assessed from birth to adulthood. Results: Significant dose-related decreases were observed in the body and reproductive organ weight, seminiferous tubule diameter, and germinal epithelium height of the offspring. Sperm density had declined significantly in offspring of the low-dose and high-dose groups, by 8.81% and 19.97%, respectively, by postnatal day 150. The number of viable fetuses had decreased significantly in females mated with male offspring of the high-dose group at postnatal days 60, 90, 120, and 150. There were also significant reductions in testosterone levels of high-dose group offspring from birth to postnatal day 150. Conclusion: It is concluded that maternal caffeine consumption impairs gonadal development and has long-term adverse effects on the reproductive efficiency of male offspring rats.

Maternal Body-mass Transfer to Offspring in the Matriphagous Spider, Amaurobius ferox (Amaurobiidae)

  • The optimal strategy for semelparous females may involve adjustments in the relative investment in two fitness components, the number of offspring and the post-hatching investment per capita. To determine the pattern of maternal resource allocation to offspring in the matriphagous spider, Amaurobius ferox (Amaurobiidae), I investigated the relationship between maternal body-mass and the number of offspring, and quantified the transfer of maternal body-mass to the offspring via different forms of maternal provisioning (trophic egg-laying and matriphagy). There was a positive relationship between female body-mass and the number of offspring. However, Amaurobius mothers did not produce more trophic eggs when they had larger broods. Rather, spiderlings in larger A. ferox broods consumed larger quantities of maternal body-mass via matriphagy. Mothers transferred $28.8{\pm}6.5%$ of their body-mass to the spiderlings via trophic egg-laying, and an estimated $39.0{\pm}12.5%$ of their body-mass was transferred to the spiderlings via matriphagy.

THE STUDY ON THE CEPHALOMETRIC SIMILARITY BETWEEN PARENTS AND OFFSPRING (친자간의 두부 X선 규격사진상에 있어서의 유사성에 관한 연구)

  • The study was performed to investigate cephalomeric similarity between parents and offspring of the Korean family by lateral cephalometric analysis. The lateral cephalograms consist of the 8 families comprising 16 parents, 5 sons and 7 daughters. In order to make an investigation of the similarity, set up, and 22 linear measurements on each depth measurements were made. The author drew up the profilograms to compare parents with offspring in each family group. The obtained results were as follows: 12 measuring points were and height and 5 angular 1. There was no common similarity on specific region between parents and offspring on each family group. 2. There was partial similarity between single parent and offspring. 3. The partial similarity between single parent and offspring was noted on the upper face in general.
