  • Offshore geotechnical site investigation of the seabed ground has been a key factor of the successful construction of various types of offshore structures like as sea-crossing bridges, submerged tunnels, and other marine facilities. Offshore investigations are not easy tasks because of the wave, wind, tidal ebb and flows, and others. Recent developments of offshore equipment including platforms and testing devices like as maine cone penetrator have inspired us to get more reliable characteristics of the seafloor. General information on the offshore site investigations and technical trends concerned are introduced.

  • Several offshore wind power conflicts occur due to the problems in which the site selection process led by private operators is improperly managed. To review the institutional improvement measures that solve this problem, domestic and foreign institutions and operational cases were comparatively analyzed, focusing on key actors from the multi-level governance perspective. First, the status of the site selection process in the Republic of Korea, major issues in stakeholder conflicts, and discussions on the planned site system-related laws (draft) were reviewed. Next, the site selection process and relevant cases in Germany, the Netherlands, and Japan were analyzed. In all these countries, site selection is done by the central government. In Germany and the Netherlands, maritime-related ministries establish overall offshore wind power site plans and conduct strategic environmental assessments for these plans. Futhermore, in the process of determining each individual site, extensive site investigation including environmental assessments are conducted. This aspect needs to be supplemented in the discussion on the direction of institutional improvement in the Republic of Korea.

  • In the design and construction of the coastal/offshore structures, it is very important to evaluate the geotechnical characteristics of marine soils, which support the structures. Although the offshore site investigation is much more difficult than onshore, safe and precise jobs have not been accomplished in Korea because of the insufficiency of the test equipments especially for the site with deep water depth. The main objective of this study is to develop a new type of marine cone penetration testing(CPT) system, which can be utilized to even deep sea and high depth of soil layer. The system is one of seabed types and employs the conventional cone, which shows more reliable results than miniature cone. The most important parts of the marine CPT including continuous rod system, cone penetration system with wheel drive, automatic cone rod assembly/dissembly system etc., were designed and manufactured. Some tests to verify the developed marine CPT system were performed at both onshore and offshore sites as well as mechanical test in laboratory. The test results show the consistent and promising performance of the new equipment, and thereafter the system would be applicable to various sites with practical/economical advantages.

  • Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute(KORDI) conducted an offshore geotechnical investigation for the Eardo Ocean Research Station with the help of the Fugro International Limited at a site location approximately 152 km away from Mara Island, Korea. The primary purpose of the geotechnical investigation was to obtain information on soil and foundation conditions, and to develop foundation design data for a fixed offshore observation platform. This paper discussed the details of the geotechnical investigation and the foundation design recommendations for the Ocean Research Station. Clear recommendations were proposed for the foundation type of driven pile considering the existing soil conditions.

  • In order to construct offshore structures safely, geotechnical investigation should be carried out with high accuracy. Up to now, onshore geotechnical investigation equipments installed on the barge are used for offshore geotechnical investigation. In this case, many limitations can be confronted such as deep water depth, high wave, strong current, severe wind and so on. For the safe and economic offshore geotechnical investigation with high precision, a seabed type unmanned automated site investigation equipment is developed. It can be operated remotely underwater conditions with 100m water depth and can explore the ground depth of 50m. Also, the standard penetration test (SPT), soil boring, soil sampling and rock coring can be possible using the equipment. Numerical analysis was conducted to secure the stability of the equipment against current of 4 knot. Energy efficiency of SPT apparatus which is attached to the equipment shows 78% in average.

  • Recently, the demand for the Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading facility (FPSO) which has some economic and technical advantages, has increased in offshore oil production areas. FPSO vessel dose not have self-propulsion system, but has additional facilities for oil production and positioning system. Main noise sources such as gas turbines, compressors, and pumps, are located on top of the hull (Topside area). In general, the noise regulation for the offshore structure is severer than that of the cargo ship and acceptable noise limit of cabin is specified as 45 dB(A). This paper describes the noise characteristics and the countermeasures for FPSO Topside area through investigation of noise analysis and site measurement results. Proper countermeasures, considering the characteristics of sources and receiver spaces, were applied from the noise prediction and various measurement results. Finally, this ship was successfully delivered with excellent noise properties.

  • For the Gas hydrate Research and Development in Korea, the prospect area I & II was surveyed and drilled during the first phase. At the result, we succeeded to discovering gas hydrate real sample at BSR reflection and vent structure. This expedition processing contributes to developing the offshore seismic survey technologies and data processing of Korea. But Korean gas hydrate test production research, in spite of activating test production at other countries, is such a limitation about technician, GH production technologies and E&P processing. First of all, there is no exist in Korea to application site for the their production research results. In this paper, we have studied the gas hydrate reservoir selection technics of the DOE & BPXA for the ANS test production. And this result will helpful to preparation of gas hydrate test production in Korea.

  • Recently, offshore wind farms are increasingly expected, because there are huge resource and large site in offshore. Jeju island has optimum condition for constructing a wind energy farm. Unlike the mainland, Jeju island has stratified structure distribution between rock layers sediments due to volcanic activation. In these case, it can be occur engineering problems in whole structures as well as the safety of foundation as the thickness and distribution of sediment under top rock layer can not support sufficiently the structure. In this paper, the settlement and stress distribution is predicted by numerical analysis when the mono-pile base are constructed on various soft layer between stratified structure. To determine the settlement of the pile foundation supported on stratified rock layer, the geological investigation at the 3 regiions and the results of laboratory experiments of the stratified rock layer is required.

  • The Honam-Jeju, Korea-Japan, and Korea-China subsea tunnel construction projects have drawn significant attention since the early 2000s. These subsea tunnels are much deeper than most existing natural shallow sea tunnels linking coastal areas. Thus, the need for developing new technologies for the site selection and construction of deep subsea tunnels has recently emerged, with the launch of a research project titled "Development of Key Subsea Tunnelling Technology" in 2013. A component of this research, an analysis of deep subsea geological structure, is currently underway. A ground investigation, such as a borehole or geophysical investigation, is generally carried out for tunnel design. However, when investigating a potential site for a deep subsea tunnel, borehole drilling requires equipment at the scale of offshore oil drilling. The huge cost of such an undertaking has raised the urgent need for methods to indirectly assess the local geological structure as much as possible to limit the need for repeated borehole investigations. This study introduces an indirect approach for assessing the geological structure of the seafloor through a submarine bathymetry analysis. The ultimate goal here is to develop an automated approach to the analysis of submarine geological structures, which may prove useful in the selection of future deep subsea tunnel sites.
