  • It is prerequisite to generate epipolar resampled images by reducing the y-parallax for accurate and efficient processing of satellite stereo images. Minimizing y-parallax requires the accurate sensor modeling that is carried out with ground control points. However, the approach is not feasible over inaccessible areas where control points cannot be easily acquired. For the case, a relative orientation can be utilized only with conjugate points, but its accuracy for satellite sensor should be studied because the sensor has different geometry compared to well-known frame type cameras. Therefore, we carried out the bias-compensation of RPCs (Rational Polynomial Coefficients) without any ground control points to study its precision and effects on the y-parallax in epipolar resampled images. The conjugate points were generated with stereo image matching with outlier removals. RPCs compensation was performed based on the affine and polynomial models. We analyzed the reprojection error of the compensated RPCs and the y-parallax in the resampled images. Experimental result showed one-pixel level of y-parallax for Kompsat-3 stereo data.

  • This study presents an investigation of the changes of the currents in Kwangyang Bay due to the construction of harbor, reclamation and coastal developments. Currents were simulated by the numerical experiments with a diagnostic multi-level model and using the seasonal oceanographic data of temperature, salinity and ocean current. The values of kinetic and potential energies for the currents were calculated in cases of three topographical changes; before coastal developments, the existing state and after completion of the development project in Kwangyang Bay. The changes of currents due to the coastal developments are as follow; Kinetic energies of tide induced residual currents and wind driven currents decreased by 35~40 percent and 5 percent respectively, however those of density currents increased by 10 percent since the decrease of the coastal areas. Kinetic energy of residual currents including tide induced residual currents, density currents and wind driven currents reduced by 10 percent compared with before the coastal developments. Decrease of current velocity was greatest in summer. Therefore, in summer it was assumed that the Kwangyang Bay is more easily polluted by stratification and decrease of residual current than before the coastal developments carried out.

  • Distribution characteristics of water masses, dissolved inorganic and organic nutrients were investigated in the southern part of the East Sea of Korea in September, 2011. On the basis of the vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, water masses in the study area were divided into 4 major groups, such as WM (water mass)-I, WM-II, WM-III, WM-IV. Their characteristics were similar to Tsushima Surface Water (TSW), Tsushima Middle Water (TMW), North Korea Cold Water (NKCW) and East Sea Proper Water (ESPW), respectively. In the vertical profiles of dissolved nutrients, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) concentrations were highest in the WM-IV, followed by WM-III, WM-II, WM-I. On the contrary, distribution of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) were highest in the WM-I, followed by WM-II, WM-III, WM-IV. Although the DIN : DIP ratio in all of the water masses was similar to Redfield ratio(16), the DIN : DIP ratio in mixed layer was about 5.3, indicating that inorganic nitrogen is the limiting factor for the growth of phytoplankton. However, the DON proportion in dissolved total nitrogen (DTN) was about 70% in the mixed layer where inorganic nitrogen is limiting factor. Thus, enriched DON may play an important source of the nutrient for the growth of phytoplankon in the East Sea.

  • Analysis frequency spectrum through observed wave data in northeastern shore, jeju island, during winter and fall, and review wave characteristics. In order to compute maximum wave height, we calculate the ratio of significant wave height to maximum wave height using the linear regression equation. In addition, for calculating JONSWAP spectrum, we assumed ${\gamma}$ value using significant wave height and peak frequency in the observation area. Consequently, the highest frequency is below 1 m in the case of significant wave height and during the first observation, the mean of height was estimated at 0.523 m and during the scend observation, it was 0.423 m. Furthermore, in peak frequency, the highest frequency was 0.12 Hz~0.15 Hz (period is nearly 6.67s~8.33s), the results of ${\gamma}$ from using significant wave height and peak frequency is 2.72 and the significant wave height calculated by straight linear regression equation was $1.635H_s$.

  • There are several factors to consider for a ship to enter or depart a port safely. It is particularly important to identify the tides in the port to reduce the risk of stranding the ship. Most previous studies have focused on finding and analyzing harmonic constants. However, the research on the analysis and accuracy of harmonic constants in other hydrographic agencies is lacking. In this study, six Korean ports (Incheon, Gunsan, Yeosu, Busan, Ulsan, and Sokcho) were compared to the British and Korean tide tables based on actual information. To find the cause of tidal difference, the tide height, tide time, and form factor were calculated using harmonic constants. The information was then compared with British and Korean data. As a result of the difference in analysis of actual information and tide tables, there was a difference between the actual tide height and time at each port. The cause was found to be the difference in the harmonic constant, tide, and form factor between the UK and Korea. Therefore, this study, the Korean standard port should be added to the British tide table, and harmonic constants, which are the criteria for creating tides, must be constantly updated with the latest information. Additionally, the tide tables produced in each country are more accurate than the tide tables produced in UK.

  • In order to establish eLoran system it needs the betterment of a receiver and a transmitter, the add of data channel to loran pulse for loran system information and the differential Loran for compensating Loran-c signal. Precise ASF database map is essential if the Loran delivers the high absolute accuracy of navigation demanded at maritime harbor entrance. In this study we developed the ASF mapping method using predicted ASFs compensated by the measured ASFs for maritime in the harbor. Actual ASF is measured by the legacy Loran signal transmitted from Pohang station in the GRI 9930 chain. We measured absolute propagation delay between the Pohang transmitting station and the measurement points by comparing with the cesium clock for the calculation of the ASFs. Monteath model was used for the irregular terrain along the propagation path in the Yeongil Bay. We measured the actual ASFs at the 12 measurement points over the Yeongil Bay. In our ASF-mapping method we estimated that the each offsets between the predicted and the measured ASFs at the 12 spaced points in the Yeongil. We obtained the ASF map by adjusting the predicted ASF results to fit the measured ASFs over Yeungil bay.

  • The spreading Cocuoainim polykikoides bloom in the southern coastal waters of Korea was simulated using numerical model including the physical processes of water flow and the chemical processes of increasing cell of C. polykikoides by uptake of dissolved nutrients. The circulation of sea water was simulated by two dimensional tide model reflecting the main four tidal components of $M_2,\;S_2,\;K_1,\;O_1$, and permanent current was driven by inflow/outflow across open boundaries. According to the result of model which tidal and permanent current were reflected simultaneously, eastward flows entering the southern waters from the western waters of Korea are dominant but westward flows are weak relatively. These result suggest that it is difficult for initial C. polykikoides bloom generated in the coastal waters of Goheung to move to the western coast of Korea through Jeju Strait. For spreading model of C. poiyhikoides, the range of generating distribution and the generating time of C. polykikoides bloom in coastal area are similar to those of observation data in the field. Wind is the most important factor in moving and distribution of red tide. Permanent current flowing eastward is also considered to be important factor and tidal current was a little influenced.

  • A gas turbine engine plays an important role as a prime mover that is used in the marine transportation field as well as the space/aviation and power plant fields. However, it has a complicated structure and there is a time delay element in the combustion process. Therefore, an elaborate mathematical model needs to be developed to control a gas turbine engine. In this study, a modeling technique for a gas generator, a PLA actuator, and a metering valve, which are major components of a gas turbine engine, is explained. In addition, sub-models are obtained at several operating points in a steady state based on the trial running data of a gas turbine engine, and a method for controlling the engine speed is proposed by designing an NPID controller for each sub-model. The proposed NPID controller uses three kinds of gains that are implemented with a nonlinear function. The parameters of the NPID controller are tuned using real-coded genetic algorithms in terms of minimizing the objective function. The validity of the proposed method is examined by applying to a gas turbine engine and by conducting a simulation.

  • This paper studies relationship between typhoon and El Ni$\tilde{n}$o La Ni$\tilde{n}$a events by using 25 years meteorological data of KMA and JMA. The results are listed below. Annual mean number of typhoon's occurrence in El Ni$\tilde{n}$o event year is 23.9, and that in La Ni$\tilde{n}$a event year is 24.9. The number of typhoon's occurrence decreases in El Ni$\tilde{n}$o event year. Mean central minimum pressure and mean maximum wind speed in El Ni$\tilde{n}$o event year are 959.3hPa and 35.8m/s, and those in La Ni$\tilde{n}$a event year are 965.5hPa and 33.7m/s respectively. Intension of typhoon is stronger in El Ni$\tilde{n}$o event year than La Ni$\tilde{n}$a event year. To be more specific mean central minimum pressure is lower 6.2hPa and mean maximum wind speed is stronger 2.1m/s. This result is closely connected with sea area of typhoon's occurrence. Typhoons in El Ni$\tilde{n}$o event year are more likely to occur in east of 150E and south of 10N, but those in La Ni$\tilde{n}$a event year are more likely to occur in 120-150E and north of 20N. Typhoons which occur in east of 150E and south of 10N can be stronger because the typhoons move in broad sea area of high sea surface temperature in western North Pacific.
