  • Forest fire happens every year at Yeongdong, Gangwon-do, due to the strong local wind during the spring time and it causes a huge damage. This wind is named "Yangganjipung" or "Yanggangjipung" that blows along Yeongdong. However, the occurrence conditions of the wind have been still unclear. To identify the occurrence mechanism of local strong wind through three-dimensional observation data, Gangwon Regional Meteorological Administration performed Joint Gangwon-Yeongdong 3D Observation Project in 2020. The special observation was carried out for 6 times from March to April. The observation data was analyzed by focusing on the structure of synoptic pressure distribution and inversion layer. The result showed that the strength of wind is different depending on the latitude of low pressure, intensity of inversion layer, and changes on height in the south-high and north-low pressure distribution. As the interval of the upper and lower parts of the inversion layer was narrow, the strength of the wind became stronger, which is one of the observational characteristics of the springtime wind pattern at Yeongdong, Gangwon-do. In future, the clear mechanism of the local wind in the Yeongdong during the spring time is expected to be verified based on the accumulative observation data and close analysis.

  • The coastal composite fishery has the highest rate of around 30.0% in registered fishing vessels of Korea for the last three years. The risk analysis for the fisher's safety of coastal composite fishing vessels was conducted to serve as a basic data for improving the healthy and safe working environment of fisher using fisher's occupational accidents of the national federation of fisheries cooperatives (NFFC) from 2016 to 2018 (n = 1,105). As a result, the occupational accident occurrence rate of coastal composite fishery was 3.76% in all industries, 7.8 times the rate of that. In addition, death and missing rate was found to have a serious level management to 10.10‱. Among the accidents, 76.0% occurred at sea. The slipping, others and contact with machinery or fishing gear occurred more frequently in order in the frequency of accident occurrence pattern. In the risk assessment using frequency and severity, slipping, contact with machinery and others showed high risk during fishing. The results are expected to contribute to identification and assessment of safety hazard occurred in coastal composite fishing vessels.

  • Jeju International Airport is characterized by the occurrence of low-level windshear due to its location, surrounding terrain, and its weather characteristics. Especially the low-level windshear accompanied by tailwinds on both sides of the runway i.e., bidirectional tailwind, is a hazardous weather phenomenon with unique characteristics that are difficult to find at any other airports. This study focuses on bidirectional tailwind occurrence at Jeju International Airport in 2020-2021. As a result, characteristic pressure patterns of the types that cause bidirectional tailwind was identified as it was possible to categorize strong wind types such as 1) strong southwest wind, 2) strong east wind, and 3) strong northwest wind, which do not cause bidirectional tailwind, and wind direction variation types such as 4) bidirectional tailwind, and 5) south wind followed by southwest wind, which cause bidirectional tailwind. The results of this study are expected to contribute to improving aviation safety by enabling aviation operators to predict and take appropriate safety measures based on their understanding of the causes and characteristics of bidirectional tailwind.

  • In this study, we analyzed typhoon affecting Korean Peninsula and runoff characteristic changes according to the typhoon based on Sumjin river dam, a representative multi-purpose dam. We quantified typhoon flow by applying the typhoon domain, and will provide base data for climate change adaptation and counterstrategy through correlation analysis of the change of typhoon statistical data and Indicators of Hydrologic Alterations (IHA). Korean Peninsula impact typhoon has a great effect on the scale of peak flow and the change of occurrence time. The occurrence frequency and duration of the peak flow were analyzed to be relatively unrelated to the typhoon affected by the Korean peninsula. These changes were also confirmed in the correlation analysis results. Correlation coefficient between the peak flow (0.41) and peak flow occurrence time (correlation coefficient = 0.83) was positively correlated with the Korean peninsula influenced typhoon.

  • The contrast medium is very commonly used in more than 90% of computed tomography(CT) scans. It is difficult to predict the occurrence of adverse reactions and the degree of adverse reactions are diverse from mild urticaria, itching, nausea, vomiting to even cardiopulmonary arrest. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the symptoms, occurrence rate and risk factors of the adverse reactions in patients after contrast injection during CT examinations. Two hundreds sixty-five patients showed symptoms of adverse reactions out of 71,117 adult patients who received intravenous contrast administration during CT scans from January 2003 to December 2003 at a general hospital. Data was collected by reviewing adverse reaction records and electronic medical record. The results of this study were as follows; 1. Adverse reactions occurred in 265 out of a total of 71,117 patients(0.37%). Clinical symptoms of adverse reactions were most commonly dermatologic problems such as urticaria(69.81%) and itching(63.02%), followed by dyspnea(14.34%), dizziness(11.70%), nausea(6.79%), and vomiting(7.17%). 2. Anaphylactoid reactions occurred in 47 out of a total of 265 patients, and their pattern of symptoms were most commonly related to cardiovascular system(90.91%), followed by respiratory system(82.22%), gastrointestinal system(51.72%), and dermatologic system(16.51%). Eleven patients were transferred to emergency room for further treatment and two patients needed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. 3. The adverse reactions were significantly more common in women than in men(0.46% vs.0.32%, p=.003) and in type D contrast medium than the others(p<.001). The occurrence rate of adverse reactions was not significantly different according to the age and infusion speed of the contrast medium.

  • This study conducted a quantitative assessment on the environmental flows associated with climate change in the Gosam Reservoir, Korea. The application of RCP 8.5 climate change scenario has found that the peak value of High Flow Pulses has increased by 36.0 % on average compared to historical data (2001 ~ 2010), which is likely to cause disadvantage on flood control and management but the increase in peak value is expected to make a positive impact on resolving the issue of green algal blooms, promoting vegetation in surrounding areas and encouraging spawning and providing habitats for native species by releasing a larger amount of landslides as well as organic matters than the past. However, the decreasing pattern of the peak value of High Flow Pulses is quite apparent with the trend of delay on the occurrence time of peak value, necessitating a long-term impact analysis. The peak value of Large Floods shows a clear sign of decrease against climate change scenario, which is expected to lead to changes in fish species caused by degraded quality of water and decreasing habitats. A quicker occurrence of Small Floods is also expected to make an impact on the growth cycle of aquatic plants, and the reduction in occurrence frequency of Extreme Low Flows is to contribute to increasing the population of and raising the survival rate of native fish, greatly improving the aquatic ecosystem. The results of this study are expected to be useful to establish the water environment and ecological system in adapting or responding to climate change.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel fingerprint classification method to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of the fingerprint identification system, one of biometrics systems. According to the previous researches, fingerprints can be categorized into the several patterns based on their pattern of ridges and valleys. After construction of fingerprint database based on their patters, fingerprint classification approach can help to accelerate the fingerprint recognition. The reason is that classification methods reduce the size of the search space to the fingerprints of the same category before matching. First, we suggest a method to extract region of interest (ROI) which have real information about fingerprint from the image. And then we propose a feature extraction method which combines gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) and wavelet features. Finally, we compare the performance of our proposed method with the existing method which use only GLCM as the feature of fingerprint by using the multi-layer perceptron and support vector machine.

  • In this paper, a method using a neural network was applied for the purpose of urilizing spatial features. The adopted model of neural network the three-layered architecture, and the training algorithm is the back-propagation algorithm. Co-occurrence matrix which is generated from original imge was used for imput pattern to the neural network in order to tolerate variations of patterns like rotation of displacement. Co-occurrence matrix is explained in appendix. To evaluate this method, classification was executed with this method and texture features method over the city area and sand area, which cannot be separated with the conventional method mentioned aboved. In the results of this method and texture features proposed by Haralick the method using texture features was separation rate of 67%~89%. On the contrary, the method using neural network proposed in this research was stable and high separation rate of 80%~98%.

  • LE-7A is the main engine of the H-IIA launch vehicle. Under its development, the nozzle suffered from two troubles during startup and shutdown transients of the engine. One is a large side load, which damages the actuator of the nozzle, and the other is damage on regenerative cooling tubes due to high heat load. It has been considered that these problems are caused by a peculiar separation pattern called Restricted Shock Separation (RSS). RSS is observed in several rocket nozzles, for example, LE-7A nozzle, Vulcain nozzle and so on. Their contours are not conventional truncated perfect (TP) nozzle - LE-7A nozzle is a compressed truncated perfect (CTP) nozzle and Vulcain nozzle is a thrust optimized (TO) nozzle. Although it is believed that the occurrence of RSS is affected by the nozzle contour, the mechanisms are not clarified sufficiently yet. In the present paper, a parametric numerical study is carried out to investigate the mechanisms of the occurrence of RSS in CTP nozzles during startup transient. The results show that RSS is caused by the adverse pressure gradient downstream of the Mach disk. The adverse pressure gradient is caused by the interaction of the pressure wave and Mach disk. The method to avoid the occurrence of RSS is also examined. A small step inside the nozzle affects the position of the separation point and prevents RSS. The result shows that the possibility that RSS can be suppressed by controlling the position of the separation point.
