Objectives: In three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT), the cant is evaluated by measuring the distance between the reference plane (or line) and the tooth. The purpose of this study was to determine the horizontal skeletal reference plane that showed the greatest correlation with clinical evaluation. Materials and Methods: The subjects were 15 patients who closed their eyes during the CT image taking process. The menton points of all patients deviated by more than 3 mm. In the first evaluation, clinical cant was measured. The distance from the inner canthus to the ipsilateral canine tip and the distance from the eyelid to the ipsilateral first molar were obtained. The distance between the left and right sides was also measured. In the second evaluation, skeletal cant was measured. Six reference planes and one line were used for the evaluation of occlusal cant: 1) FH plane R: Or.R - Or.L - Po.R; 2) FH plane L: Or.R - Or.L - Po.L; 3) F. Ovale plane R: Rt.F.Ovale - Lt.F.Ovale - Or.R; 4) F. Ovale plane L: Rt.F.Ovale - Lt.F.Ovale - Or.L; 5) FZS plane R: Rt.FZS - Lt.FZS - Po.R; 6) FZS plane R: Rt.FZS - Lt.FZS - Po.L, and; 7) FZS line: Rt.FZS - Lt.FZS. Results: The clinical and skeletal cants were compared using linear regression analysis. The FH plane R, FH plane L, and FZS line showed the highest correlation (P<0.05). Conclusion: The FH plane R and FH plane L are the most appropriate horizontal reference plane in evaluation of occlusal cant on 3D-CT.
In the previous studies about prescription of preadjusted appliance, occlusal plane was used as a reference plane for crwon angulation (tip) measurement. But this reference plane is not parallel to the line connecting the facial axis points at which the centers of brackets are positioned (Andrews' plane), due to the curve of Spee. Therefore, we developed a new reference plane unaffected by the curve of Sun and more parallel to the Andrews' plane. It is an imaginary line connecting mesial and distal marginal ridges of each posterior tooth, and we named it 'marginal ridge plane'. In this study, crown angulations of posterior teeth of 29 normal occlusion samples were measured and measurements from both reference planes were compared. Crown angulation measurements measured from occlusal plane were different from crown angulation measurements from marginal ridge plane in the upper and lower 2nd molars (p<0.01), md 1st premolars (p<0.05). These results were analyzed as the crown angulation measurements from occlusal plane were affected by the curve of Spee. Crown angulations should be varied according to the amount of curve of Spee to maintain the continuity of marginal ridges. To solve this problem, determining bracket angulation as the bracket slot is parallel to the marginal ridge plane of each posterior teeth is recommended.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationships between the occlusal plane angle and craniofacial skeletal pattern in relation to anterior overbite. Methods: Lateral cephalograms of 90 adults with skeletal class III malocclusions were traced and measured to analyze skeletal factors and occlusal plane angles. In terms of anterior overbite, all patients were classified into 3 subgroups of positive overbite, edgebite, and negative overbite groups. All measurements were evaluated statistically by ANOVA and Duncan's Post Hoc, and correlation coefficients were evaluated among measurements. Results: In this study, some skeletal measurements (saddle angle, articular angle, Y axis, AFH, SN-FH, SN-Mn, FH-Mn) showed a significant difference among the 3 groups in relation to overbite changes. Correlation coefficient showed that PFH/AFH, SN-Mn, Mx-Mn, and FH-Mn showed a significant difference with FH-Occ, Mx-Occ, and Mn-Occ. Regression analysis showed that Mx-Mn had a determination coefficient of 0.714, 0.560, and 0.677 in relation to FH-Occ, Mx-Occ, and Mn-Occ, respectively. Conclusion: This study suggests that consideration of the occlusal plane in relation to the maxillomandibular vertical skeletal state enable the establishment of a more predictable orthognathic surgery result.
This study was investigated to assess the difference of facial height and occlusal plane inclination between pre- and post-treatment in Class I malocclusion group The subjects consisted of 35 extraction patients and 30 nonextraction patient,;, and was subdivided into Group I(overbite<0mm), Group II(04mm) in reference to overbite, and adolescent group and adult group in reference to age. Lateral cephalogram was taken with standard method, traced, and digitized for each subject. The computerized statistical analysis was carried out with SAS program The results wolf as follows. 1. In both groups of extraction and nonextraction group the anterior facial height increased after orthodontic treatment but there was no significant difference(p>0.05) between each goup. 2. There was no statstical significance in change of occlusal plane inclination in adolescent group, but significant difference(p<0.05) among three subgroup in adult group. 3. In adolescent-extraction and adolescent-nonextraction group there was significant increase of anterior facial height and posterior facial height, and was superior to adult groups in posterior facial height increment. 4 In all groups upper and lower molars were uprighted to occlusal plane. This had statistically significant effect.
The purpose of this study was to investigate treatment effectiveness of TENS and bite plane for bruxism and TMJ dysfunction patients. The electromyograms were made on males aged 23 to 25 with sound stomatognathic system, 5 males bruxism aged 24 to 27, and 1 male and 4 females TMJ dysfunction patients (right TMJ pain) aged 14 to 33. The electromyographic study was limited to the middle of masseter muscle and anterior temporal muscle. The electromyographic study was carried out with 8-channel EM2 (Myotronics Research Inc.) and was taken 5 mandibular positions of clinical rest position, clench intercuspal position, clench protruded, cluch right, clench left. The 2 pairs of surface electrodes were used exactly, with the ear lobe as reference point. The recording were subjected to determine the mean voltage. The results were as follows; 1. In the clinical rest position, the muscle activities of bruxism and TMJ dysfunction patients were higher than those of normal at the before treatment, but that were lower or similar to those of normal at the TENS after and after bite plane wearing. 2. In the clench I.C.P., the muscle activities of TMJ dysfunction patients were decreased as the order of the before treatment, after TENS, after occlusal bite plane wearing, but those of bruxism were irregular. 3. In the clench right and the clench left, the muscle activities of the middle of masseter muscle of the non-working side of bruxism were higher than those of the working side at the before treatment and after TENS, but the muscle activities of after occlusal bite plane wearing were similar to those of the normal. 4. In the clench right and the clench left, the muscle activities of the middle of masseter muscle and anterior temporal muscle of the working side of TMJ dysfunction patients were higher than those of non-working side as like the normal at the before treatment, after TENS, and after occlusal bite plane wearing.

Purpose: Aims to analyze the occlusal wear patterns in maxillary posterior teeth with palatal side abfractions and study the association between occlusal force and abfractions. Materials and Methods: This study was conducted in a total of 308 teeth from 148 patients with palatal side abfractions in maxillary posterior teeth. The occlusal wears in maxillary premolars and molars with palatal side abfractions were classified and recorded. The classification was done by type of teeth, age, and gender, and in order to evaluate the statistical significance between groups, chi-square test was conducted (${\alpha}=0.05$). Results: Palatal side abfractions in maxillary posterior teeth were observed at the highest frequency in the 1st molars, and in all teeth with palatal side abfractions, more than one occlusal wear was observed. In classification by type of teeth, by age, and by gender, the occlusal wears in teeth with palatal side abfractions were observed at high frequency in cuspal inclined plane, central fossa, and marginal ridge, and there was a statistical significance (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Palatal side abfractions were observed at the highest frequency in maxillary 1st molars, and in all maxillary posterior teeth where palatal side abfractions were found, the occlusal wears were observed. And the occlusal wears were observed at high frequency in cuspal inclined plane, central fossa and marginal ridge. Such results show that abfraction is associated with occlusal force.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine the average facial proportions and mandibular movement capacity of 316 first-year dental students who carefully recorded them on each other. MATERIALS AND METHODS. This early exacting clinical experience was closely supervised by the authors in Columbus, Ohio during 1969-70. Five vertical and six horizontal distances were measured on each subject's face. An ala-tragus line and an occlusal line were drawn on the left side of the face to determine if these two lines were parallel. Measurements of mandibular movements involved maximum normal and hinge opening at the incisors and maximum amounts of right, left lateral and protrusive excursions of the mandible. RESULTS. The ala width and distance between the tips of upper right and left canine cusps averaged (35.2 mm and 34.8 mm) but with very large individual variations. The distance between ala to occlusal plane lines was 29.9 mm at the tragus and 31.3 mm near the ala. The angle between orbitale and ala-tragus averaged 13.6 degrees. CONCLUSION. The upper lip length was the most variable and the distance between the pupils was the most stable of the eleven facial measurements. The ala-tragus line and the occlusal plane lines were for all practical purposes parallel. Maximum jaw opening averaged 51.2 mm which was 3.0 times larger than maximal hinge opening of 17.2 mm. The maximum right plus left side jaw excursions (9.2 and 9.4 mm) totaled 18.6 mm, 2.3 times more than the 8.0 mm mean maximum forward protrusion.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of head position changes on the root parallelism between adjacent teeth on panoramic radiographs. Methods: A model with normal occlusion was constructed in the SolidWorks program, then RP (rapid protyping) model was fabricated. The model was repeatedly imaged and repositioned five times at each of the following nine positions: ideal head position, $5^{\circ}$ up, $10^{\circ}$ up, $5^{\circ}$ down, $10^{\circ}$ down, $5^{\circ}$, right, $10^{\circ}$, up, and $5^{\circ}$ right rotation, $10^{\circ}$ right rotation. Panoramic radiographs were taken by Planmeca ProMax and the angle between the long axes of adjacent teeth was directly measured in the monitor. Results: Axes of adjacent teeth tended to converge toward the occlusal plane when the head tilted up and converged in the opposite direction to the occlusal plane when the head tilted down. Anterior teeth showed the most notable differences. When one side of the head tilted up $5^{\circ}$ and $10^{\circ}$ along the anteroposterior axis (Y axis), tooth axes of the same side tended to converge toward the occlusal plane and tooth axes of the opposite side tended to converge in the opposite direction to the occlusal plane. When the head rotated to one side along the vertical axis (Z axis), the canine and lateral incisor of the same side converged in the opposite direction to the occlusal plane and the canine and lateral incisor of the other side converged toward the occlusal plane. Conclusions: When assessing the root parallelism on panoramic radiographs, the occlusal plane cant (anteroposterior or lateral) or asymmetry of the dental arch should be considered because these can cause distortion of tooth axes on panoramic radiographs.

Early identification of maxillary canine impaction is very important, because of treatment duration time. Analysis used by 3-dimensional computed tomography is more important than before in treatment planning. The aim of this study was to analysis of factors associated with the treatment during time of forced eruption of the impacted maxillary canine using 3-dimensional computed tomography. 17 patients were analysed in Daejeon dental hospital of Wonkwang university(16 patients with unilateral impactions and 1 patient with bilateral impaction). In total, 18 maxillary impacted cannines were analysed by 3-dimensional computed tomography. The results obtained were as follow; 1. There was positive correlation between the age of patient and treatment duration time. 2. There was positive correlation between the distance of occlusal plane to cusp of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time, and negative correlation between the length of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time. 3. There was positive correlation between the angulation of midsagittal plane to axis of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time, and negative correlation between occlusal plane to axis of maxillary impacted canine and treatment duration time. In conclusion, age, tooth length, distance from the canine cusp tip to the occlusal plane, angulation of tooth axis to occlusal plane and midsagittal plane allow that we can predict treatment duration time.
