A Study on Adolescents' Violence against Parents - With Home Environment - (청소년의 부모폭력에 관한 연구 - 가정환경과 관련하여 -)

  • The purpose of this study was to find out whether home environmental variables had a greater effect on adolescents' violence against parents. The results of self-reporting questionnaires are as follows ; The victims of violence are mainly mothers. The socio-economic status didn't influence on the degree of violence against parents. The adolescents of the extreme family type used more serious violent behavior. The higher the degree of observed and experienced violence is, the higher the degree of violence against parents. Also, the higher the degree of home education is, the lower the degree of violence against parents. Of all variables, the observed violence and structure-environmental variables account for 37.6% of adolescents' violence against parents. The results of in-depth interview showed that birth-order didn't affect violence against parents. The victims of violence were mainly stepmothers and stepfathers. These parents' educational attitudes were disagreement in parents, seriously inflicted corporal punishment and were indifferent to adolescent. Also, interviewed adolescents were observed and experienced violence in home and used violence against others.

Effects of Family Violence during Childhood on Early Adulthood Adaptation. - Focusing on 'experienced violence' and 'observed violence' - (성장기 가정 내 폭력 경험이 성인 초기 적응에 미치는 영향 - 부모간의 폭력 관찰 경험과 자신에 대한 폭력 행동 경험을 중심으로 -)

  • It is the aim of present paper to examine the effects of experienced violence and observed violence in original family on adaptation in college students. In addition, the degree of contribution of two types of aggression in family were examined. Participants were 220 college students. Among them, those who have experienced violence from mother are 60.3%. And 52.3% reported violence from father. Those who have observed their parents violent behavior are 28.8%. These childhood 'experienced violence' and 'observed violence' was significantly associated early adulthood adaptation. But its effect is dependent on participant's sex. Experienced violence from mother is positively related to confidence in scholastic achievement in female. Experienced violence from father is positively related to trumatic symptoms and trait anxiety in male. On the other hand, observed violence showed significant relationship with traumatic symptoms, impulsivity, depression, self-esteem and trait anxiety. Most importantly, multiple regression analysis showed observed violence explains early adulthood adaptation more significantly than experienced violence. The discussion addressed implications of the findings for future research and for clinical practice.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the intergenerational transmission of the family violence. The focus of the study is on the effect of the parental violent behavior on the child's aggression. For this purpose, 266 6th grade children in Seoul are classified into the two groups according to their aggression rated by their teachers. The results are as follow: 1. There are social class differences in the level of the child's aggression, experience of parent-to-child violence and parental marital violence. 2. Experiencing parent-to-child violence and parental marital violence greately affected the level of the child's aggression. The effects are greater for the children who observed parental marital violence than who experienced child violence. 3. Father-to-mother violence rather than mother-to-father violence affected the level of the child's aggression, especially for the boys.

Associations of Workplace Violence With Cardiovascular Disease Among United States Workers: Findings From a National Survey

  • Objectives: Recent research indicates a potential association between workplace violence and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the working-age population. However, the relevant evidence in the United States is sparse. Thus, this study was conducted to explore the possible relationship between workplace violence and CVD among United States workers. Methods: We utilized cross-sectional data from the 2015 National Health Interview Survey, which included a representative sample of 18 380 workers, to investigate the associations between workplace violence and the prevalence of CVD using logistic regression. Workplace violence was determined based on self-reported threats, bullying, or harassment at work over the past 12 months, supplemented with additional information regarding frequency. CVD included all forms of heart disease and stroke. Results: A total of 1334 workers reported experiences of workplace violence, and 1336 workers were diagnosed with CVD. After adjustment for covariates, participants who reported any instance of workplace violence had significantly higher odds of having CVD (odds ratio [OR], 1.76; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.35 to 2.30) than those who reported no such violence. Furthermore, the highest odds of CVD (OR, 1.80; 95% CI, 1.23 to 2.63) were observed among those frequently exposed to workplace violence. Even occasional exposure to workplace violence was associated with 74% excess odds of CVD. Conclusions: Our study indicates an association between workplace violence and CVD in United States workers, exhibiting a dose-response pattern.

Impacts of Repeated Victimization from Domestic Violence on Depression, and Moderating Effects of Social Support Networks : Focusing on Wives Whose Husbands Participated in the Correction and Rehabilitation Program for Family Violence Perpetrators (아내폭력 재피해 경험이 여성의 우울에 미치는 영향과 사회적 지지관계망의 조절효과 - 가정폭력 행위자 교정.치료프로그램 참여 남성의 아내를 중심으로 -)

  • This study examined the revictimization of wives from repeated husband violence and how that affected their depression. It also explored whether social support networks can have moderating effects. Sixty-four wives participated in the research group, 72.3% of whom had experienced repeated verbal violence, and 29.2% experienced repeated physical violence since their husbands participated in the correction and rehabilitation program for family violence perpetrators. Revictimization from repeated husband-to-wife violence was proven to significantly influence wife depression. To moderate the harmful effects of repeated domestic violence on depression, social support networks were observed to provide protective reinforcements. However, the findings of this study did not support the notion that social support networks have moderating effects on wife depression, while a strong negative relationship was established between professional networks of social support networks. Based on these results, the research discussion here advocates for an intervention that promotes psychological health to wives who are exposed to repeated domestic violence.

The Moderating Effect of Peer Attachment on the Relationship between School Violence Victimization and Cyber Violence Victimization in Children (아동의 학교폭력 피해경험이 사이버폭력 피해경험에 미치는 영향에서 또래애착의 조절효과 검증)

  • Background: The purpose of this study is to investigate whether peer attachment serves as a positive emotional resource for children who have experienced school violence and cyber violence victimization. In addition, we aim to present alternative programs to reduce school violence and promote positive peer attachment among children. Design: We utilized data from the 13th year(2020) of the Panel Study on Korean Children for this study. Methods: The survey was conducted through a questionnaire administered by surveyors, and the total number of cases was 1,357. Results: First, the effects of school violence and cyber violence victimization experiences were confirmed. Second, it can be inferred that children with isolation in peer relationships may ultimately be more vulnerable to cyber violence victimization, as their interactions in cyberspace may also be undermined, highlighting the potential impact of social relationships on cyber violence victimization. Third, it can be observed that children with high levels of peer attachment are emotionally stable, even when exposed to school violence and cyberviolence victimization, which may enable them to regulate the degree of victimization they experience. Conclusion: School violence experience and cyber violence experience interact with each other, and in this relationship, positive peer attachment is a positive resource. Therefore, it emphasizes the importance of the relationship between friends in preventing and overcoming school violence and provides suggestions for solutions based on this understanding.

A Comparative Study of the Awareness of Sexual Violence between Male and Female College Student (1개 지방도시 대학생의 성폭력에 대한 지식 및 태도 조사)

  • This comparative study was conducted to compare the attitudes of sexuality and knowledge of sexual violence between male and female college students. The subjects of this study were 222 male students and 200 female students. The survey was conducted using a questionnaire of 3 general characteristics, 11 items to test attitudes on sexuality, 10 items to test knowledge of sexual violence, 1 item on the cause of sexual violence and 1 item to check knowledge of sexual violence countermeasures. According to the SPSS/PC Program, Frequency, mean, percentage, t - test, Pearson correlation coefficient were used in analyzing the data. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. The result of the comparison between two groups was significantly different in their attitude on sexuality(t= -4.16, P<.000). Female students had higher scores than male students. 2. The result of the comparison between two groups was significantly different for their knowledge on sexual violence(t= -6.82, P<.000). Female students had higher scores than male students. 3. As a countermeasure for prevention, sex educations is needed(27%). 4. Very high correlations were observed between a subject's sex and his /her sexuality(r=.1990, P<.0001), between a subject's sex and his /her knowledge of sexual violence(r=.3157, P<.0001), between a subject's attitude on sexuality and his /her knowledge of sexual violence(r=.2538, P<.0001).

Effects of Smartphone Game Addiction by Elementary Schoolers on School Violence Awareness (초등학생의 스마트폰 게임중독이 학교폭력인식에 미치는 영향)

  • In the present study, practical measures were to be presented for prevention of smartphone game addiction and school violence by analysis of the effects aspect of the smartphone game addition by elementary school students on school violence awareness. For this purpose, a questionnaire survey was conducted for the subject of 6th graders attending an elementary school located in K city of Jeollanam-do, and a total of 258 copies were utilized as the final analysis data. Considering the analysis results, significant differences in the smartphone game addition were observed first as a function of the elementary school students' sex and game use time. The level of smartphone game addiction was observed to become higher for male students than female students, and the higher the longer the game use time during a day. Secondly, a positive (+) correlation was observed to exist between the smartphone game addiction and the school violence awareness. Thirdly, the variable affecting the school violence awareness among individual sub-variables for the smartphone game addiction was shown to be a problem with loss of control and power of reality test. The higher the addiction level of each variable, the negative tendency for school violence awareness was shown to be increased. Based on such analysis results, policy-wise, practical suggestions as well as directions for the follow-up studies have been presented for the improvement of smartphone game addiction and school violence awareness.

Custody Evaluation in High-conflict Situations Focused on Domestic Violence and Parental Alienation Syndrome

  • In a divorced family, child-centered custody evaluation is essential to ensure the child's best interests and healthy adaptation. A mental health professional's role and involvement are required in gaining an in-depth understanding of various environments and dynamics surrounding the child and family. Domestic violence, including child abuse and intimate partner violence (IPV) or parental alienation syndrome (PAS), is often observed in cases of custody evaluation in high-conflict divorced families, sometimes accompanied by allegations. Such cases warrant an extremely careful approach by the evaluator, who needs to be competent in interpreting the familial dynamics based on a reasonable context understanding. Genuine professionalism is a must for a custody evaluator to best help the child and carry out a high-quality custody evaluation process, and evaluators need to be ready for this task through adequate preparation and empowerment. This article is devoted to examining custody evaluation in divorced families in cases of IPV, child abuse, and PAS.

Elementary school students' awareness of the use of artificial intelligence chatbots in violence prevention education in South Korea: a descriptive study

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify students' awareness of the use of a chatbot (A-uC), a type of artificial intelligence technology, for violence prevention among elementary school students. Methods: The participants comprised 215 students in the fourth to sixth grades in Chuncheon, South Korea, and data were collected via a self-reported questionnaire. Results: The mean A-uC score was 3.43±0.83 out of 5 points. The mean scores for the 4 sub-dimensions of the A-uC tool were 3.48±0.80 for perceived value, 3.44±0.98 for perceived usefulness, 3.63±0.92 for perceived ease of use, and 3.15±1.07 for intention to use. Significant differences were observed in A-uC scores (F=59.26, p<.001) according to the need for the use of chatbots in violence prevention education. The relationships between intention to use and the other A-uC sub-dimensions showed significant correlations with perceived value (r=.85, p<.001), perceived usefulness (r=.76, p<.001), and perceived ease of use (r=.64, p<.001). Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that chatbots can be used in violence prevention education for elementary school students.
