This paper presents a case history of a deep open cut excavation of Nakagawa section for Futuoka Subway construction which adopted observational mettled against boiling failure and completed with success by modifying construction based upon field monitoring. One of the difficult conditions for the excavation was sandy layer with high water pressure which was anticipated boiling failure. The boiling was generally considered as one of the difficult phenomena to work with the observational method because of its unpredictable catastrophic nature. Laboratory experiments showed the existence of the prefailure movements of the ground and the possibility of the application of the observational method against the boiling failure. Construction step was planned to be modified, if necessary, based upon field monitoring and was completed with success.

The purpose of this study is to investigate on influence of the observations by the given weights, through the observational equations of the least square. According to the tention, elongation lengths are obtained by using the each tape and observational results are analyzed in the given weights. Through the results of this study, we found that variations of weights have not a great influence on the observations.
The purpose of the this study was to examine the relationship between mother-child interaction play assessment of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) and delinquency through observational method. The subjects were 30children(normal: 15, ADHD: 15) between 4-6 elementary school grade. Instruments used Parent-Child Interaction Assessment(P-CIPA), Inventory of Delinquency-Oriented Behavior and Korea Children Behavior Check List(K-CBCL). Results showed that following : 1) ADHD affect the delinquency-oriented behavior; 2) there were significant differences in mother-child interaction play assessment between normal children group and ADHD children group; and 3) there was a significant relationship between parent-child interaction play assessment and delinquency.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between pre-service elementary teacher's prior knowledge and processes of observations and hypotheses generation via analysis of descriptive fault patterns during observation, problem generation and hypotheses generation processes. For the purpose of this study, thirty-four undergraduate students were participated and descriptions of participants' responds were analyzed. As the result, four patterns of descriptive fault on the process of generating hypothesis were classified; 1) descriptive fault from the causalities, 2) descriptive fault from repetition of observational facts, 3) descriptive fault from the priority of prior knowledge, and 4) descriptive fault from negation of the observational facts. From the result, the researcher was able to explore the faults caused by pre-service elementary students' prior knowledge through the observational descriptive analysis with hypothetical descriptive analysis.
The most widespread techniques for DEM generation are stereoscopy for optical sensor images and interfereometry for SAR images. These techniques suffer from certain sensor and processing limitations, which can be overcome by the synergetic use of both sensors and DEMs respectively. In this paper, different strategies for fusing SAR and optical data are combined to derive high quality DEM products. The filtering techniques, which take advantage of the complementary properties of SAR and stereo optical DEMs, will be applied for the fusion process. By taking advantage of the fact that errors of the DEMs are of different nature using the filtering technique, affected part are filtered and replaced by those of the counterpart and is tested with two sets of SPOT and ERS DEM, resulting in a remarkable improvement in DEM. for the analysis of results, the reference DEM is generated from digital base map(1:5000).
The observational design and construction method in tunnels is becoming important recently. In many tunnels, enormous cost and time are consumed to cope with the failing or sliding of rock blocks, which could not be predicted because of the complexity of rock discontinuities. It is difficult to estimate the properties of rock masses before the construction. In this paper, a new observational design and construction method in tunnels are proposed, and then applied to the example of the very large cross section tunnel based on actual discontinuity information observed in situ. The items examined in developing a program for the new observational design and construction method are the following ones: generality, precision, high speed, and friendly usability. At the very large cross section tunnel, 7 key blocks were judged to be unstable because they could not be supported by standard supports. Supplementary supports were installed to these 7 key blocks before the excavation. It is possible to detect key blocks all along the tunnel exactly by using the numerical analysis program developed for the new observational design and construction method in the very large cross section tunnel. This computer simulation method with user-friendly interfaces can calculate not only the stability of key blocks but also the design of supplementary supports.

Since insects play important roles in existence of plants and other animals in the natural environment, they are considered as necessary biological resources from the perspectives of those biodiversity conservation and national utilization strategy. For the conservation and utilization of insect species, an observational learning environment is needed for non-experts such as citizens and students to take interest in insects in the natural ecosystem. The insect identification is a main factor for the observational learning. A current time-consuming search method by insect classification is inefficient because it needs much time for the non-experts who lack insect knowledge to identify insect species. To solve this problem, we proposed an smart phone-based insect identification inference system that helps the non-experts identify insect species from observational characteristics in the natural environment. This system is based on the similarity between the observational information by an observer and the biological insect characteristics. For this system, we classified the observational characteristics of insects into 27 elements according to order, family, and species, and proposed similarity indexes to search similar insects. In addition, we developed an insect identification inference prototype system to show this study's viability and performed comparison experimentation between our system and a general insect classification search method. As the results, we showed that our system is more effective in identifying insect species and it can be more efficient in search time.
In this paper we review the observational results on Relic radio sources in clusters of galaxies. We discuss their observational properties, structures and radio spectra. We will show that Relics can be divided according to their size, morphology, and location in the galaxy cluster. These differences could be related to physical properties of Relic sources. The comparison with cluster conditions suggests that Relics could be related to shock waves originated by cluster mergers.
An increasing number of observations have confirmed the presence of multiple stellar populations in Galactic globular clusters. Multiple populations evidence come from the complex chemical pattern of stars hosted in GCs and from the split or broadening of different evolutionary sequences in the color-magnitude diagrams. Multiple stellar populations have been identified in Galactic and Magellanic Cloud clusters, as well as in external galaxies. In this paper I will summarize the observational facts.
Triggered star formation is not a new idea - it's been around for at least the last 30 years. Although it has never disappeared from the scene, it seems to be enjoying something of a renaissance in recent years, in both observational and theoretical studies. Here we give a brief discussion of the background of triggered star formation, describe some of our own recent observational efforts in this regard, and briefly mention some initial conclusions that may be drawn.
