  • Silicon carbide nanowires were grown by heat treatment of the films at $1200^{\circ}C$ after amorphous SiC thin films were deposited on graphite substrate by radio frequency magnetron sputtering at $600^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that SiC nanowires with the diameter of 20-60 nm and length of about 50nm were grown from Field Emission Scanning Election Microscope (FE-SEM) and Transmission Election Microscope (TEM) observation. The diameter of nanowires was increased as heat treatment time is increased. The nanowires were identified to ${\beta}$-SiC single crystalline from X-Ray Diffraction(XRD) analysis. It was observed from this study that deposition temperature of samples was critical to the crystallization of nanowires. On the other hand, the effect of deposition time was insignificant.

  • This paper presents a probabilistic head tracking method, mainly applicable to face recognition and human robot interaction, which can robustly track human head against various variations such as pose/scale change, illumination change, and background clutters. Compared to conventional particle filter based approaches, the proposed method can effectively track a human head by regularizing the sample space and sequentially weighting multiple visual cues, in the prediction and observation stages, respectively. Experimental results show the robustness of the proposed method, and it is worthy to be mentioned that some proposed probabilistic framework could be easily applied to other object tracking problems.

  • Ag metallic particles from nano-scale to submicron-scale are combined with organic solvent to provide fine circuits and interconnection. Ink-jet printing with Ag nano particle inks demonstrated the potentials of the new printed electronics technology. The bonding at the interface between the Ag wiring layer and the various substrates is very important. In this study, the details of interfaces in Ag wiring are investigated primarily by microstructure observation. By adjusting the materials and sintering conditions, nicely formed interfaces between Ag wiring and Cu, Au or organic substrates are achieved. In contrast, transmission electron microscope (TEM) image clearly shows interface debonding between Ag wiring and Sn substrate. Sn oxides are formed on the surface of the Sn plating. The formation of these is a root cause of the interface debonding.

  • In this study, the lap welding between austenitic stainless steel and carbon steel was carried out using arc spot welding process and weldability of welded specimens was estimated. From the tensile-shear strength test, micro Vickers hardness test, and microstructure observation, specimen of 6.5mm(hole of upper plate) showed the best results in terms of tensile-shear strength and nugget shape. And there was an unmixed zone in fusion boundary between the carbon steel base metal and bulk weld metal. This zone had very thin width with the hard microstructure. The shape of weld nugget in arc spot welding of dissimilar metal welds was predicted by searching thermal history of a weld joint through a three-dimensional finite element model. From the numerical analysis, predicted the shape of weld nugget showed good agreement with the experiment(Received August 24, 1999)

  • In this study, we investigated interaction of Schwann cells (SCs) with various cell-adhesive coated polymer surface. We used cell-adhesives that like a fibronectin (FN), fibrinogen(FG), laminin(LM), vitronectin (VN), poly-D-Iysine (PDL), and poly-L-Iysine (PLL) to coat PLGA film surface and evaluated the surface property of coated or not PLGA films by measurement of water contact angle and ESCA. SCs were cultured on coated or non-coated PLGA film surface, and then examined the cell adhesion and proliferation by cell count and SEM observation. Cell count results revealed initial cell adhesion related to protein adsorption on PLGA surface. In addition, serum content in media related to cell proliferation rate. In this result, we recognized that adhesion and proliferation of SCs were affected by specific cell-adhesives. In these results, we recognized that is important to provide the suitable surface environment according to cell types and culture condition for improvement of cell adhesion and proliferation.

  • In remote sensing, images are acquired over the same area by sensors of different spectral ranges (from the visible to the microwave) and/or with different number, position, and width of spectral bands. These images are generally partially redundant, as they represent the same scene, and partially complementary. For many applications of image classification, the information provided by a single sensor is often incomplete or imprecise resulting in misclassification. Fusion with redundant data can draw more consistent inferences for the interpretation of the scene, and can then improve classification accuracy. The common approach to the classification of multisensor data as a data fusion scheme at pixel level is to concatenate the data into one vector as if they were measurements from a single sensor. The multiband data acquired by a single multispectral sensor or by two or more different sensors are not completely independent, and a certain degree of informative overlap may exist between the observation spaces of the different bands. This dependence may make the data less informative and should be properly modeled in the analysis so that its effect can be eliminated. For modeling and eliminating the effect of such dependence, this study employs a strategy using self and conditional information variation measures. The self information variation reflects the self certainty of the individual bands, while the conditional information variation reflects the degree of dependence of the different bands. One data set might be very less reliable than others in the analysis and even exacerbate the classification results. The unreliable data set should be excluded in the analysis. To account for this, the self information variation is utilized to measure the degrees of reliability. The team of positively dependent bands can gather more information jointly than the team of independent ones. But, when bands are negatively dependent, the combined analysis of these bands may give worse information. Using the conditional information variation measure, the multiband data are split into two or more subsets according the dependence between the bands. Each subsets are classified separately, and a data fusion scheme at decision level is applied to integrate the individual classification results. In this study. a two-level algorithm using hierarchical clustering procedure is used for unsupervised image classification. Hierarchical clustering algorithm is based on similarity measures between all pairs of candidates being considered for merging. In the first level, the image is partitioned as any number of regions which are sets of spatially contiguous pixels so that no union of adjacent regions is statistically uniform. The regions resulted from the low level are clustered into a parsimonious number of groups according to their statistical characteristics. The algorithm has been applied to satellite multispectral data and airbone SAR data.

  • With the development of sensor and satellite technology, numerous high-resolution and multi-spectral satellite images have been available. Due to their wavelength-dependent reflection, transmission, and scattering characteristics, multi-spectral satellite images can provide complementary information for earth observation. In particular, the short-wave infrared (SWIR) band can penetrate certain types of atmospheric aerosols from the benefit of the reduced Rayleigh scattering effect, which allows for a clearer view and more detailed information to be captured from hazed surfaces compared to the visible band. In this study, we proposed a multi-resolution transform-based image fusion method to combine visible and SWIR satellite images. The purpose of the fusion method is to generate a single integrated image that incorporates complementary information such as detailed background information from the visible band and land cover information in the haze region from the SWIR band. For this purpose, this study applied the Laplacian pyramid-based multi-resolution transform method, which is a representative image decomposition approach for image fusion. Additionally, we modified the multiresolution fusion method by combining a haze-guided weight map based on the prior knowledge that SWIR bands contain more information in pixels from the haze region. The proposed method was validated using very high-resolution satellite images from Worldview-3, containing multi-spectral visible and SWIR bands. The experimental data including hazed areas with limited visibility caused by smoke from wildfires was utilized to validate the penetration properties of the proposed fusion method. Both quantitative and visual evaluations were conducted using image quality assessment indices. The results showed that the bright features from the SWIR bands in the hazed areas were successfully fused into the integrated feature maps without any loss of detailed information from the visible bands.

  • Gellan gum as a natural polysaccharide has good heat resistance, acid resistance and enzymes resistance. However, one of the drawbacks of gellan gum might be the lower mechanical strength. In this work, gellan gum scaffolds were mixed with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) microsphere in order to improve mechanical properties. The gellan gum scaffolds with various contents of PLGA microsphere were prepared for the regeneration of disc tissues. To evaluate the mechanical strength of hybrid structure of gellan gum and PLGA microsphere, compression strength of the fabricated scaffolds was measured. MTT analysis, SEM observation, histological evaluation and RT-PCR were performed to confirm the effect on the cell growth and extracellular matrix secretion. As a result, it showed the best cell proliferation and extracellular matrix secretion in gellan gum sponge containing 50% PLGA microspheres. In conclusion, this study confirmed that the hybrid structure of gellan gum and PLGA microspheres was found suitable in regeneration of the intervertebral disc.
