  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the seven passions in terms of physical vector, and to understand the point of actions and directions. The result of this study will help us understand the aspect that the seven passions result in obesity and contribute in finding effective treatments. Methods : The characters of each seven passions were identified according to ${\ulcorner}$Hwangjenaekyung-Huangdineijing${\lrcorner}$. Results and Conclusions : 1. Each of the seven passions differs individually in physical characters in terms of points of actions and directions. 2. As the vector points of each seven passion work closely to digestive metabolism, and if the directions of vector clash into normal physiology, huge effects on obesity can be brought about. 3. Obesity, as a pathological situation, can be approached by canceling out all the vector elements of the seven passions. Here, the vector elements are basically regarded as the sources of obesity. 4. Psychological models of obesity can be applied for prevention and treatment.

  • Obesity is a significant problem affecting United States (US) firefighters. While body mass index (BMI) is widely used to diagnose obesity, its use for this occupational group has raised concerns about validity. We examined rates and types of misclassification of BMI-based obesity status compared to body fat percentage (BF%) and waist circumference (WC). Male career firefighters (N = 994) from 20 US departments completed all three body composition assessments. Mean BMI, BF%, and WC were $29kg/m^2$, 23%, and 97 cm, respectively. Approximately 33% and 15% of BF%- and WC-defined obese participants were misclassified as non-obese (false negatives) using BMI, while 8% and 9% of non-obese participants defined by BF% and WC standards were identified as obese (false positives) using BMI. When stratified by race/ethnicity, Pacific Islanders showed high rates of false positive misclassification. Precision in obesity classification would be improved by using WC along with BMI to determine firefighters' weight status.

  • Objectives: The present study systematically reviewed previous studies published in Korea regarding obesity status of children and adolescents in order to provide valid directions for future research and to help establish evidence-based prevention strategies. Methods: The articles were selected by searching the primary keyword 'obesity' and the secondary keywords 'children', 'young children', 'adolescents' or 'kids' on the KISS (Korean Studies Information Service System). Out of 503 articles excluding the overlap, 308 articles were selected with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Secular trends of obesity research, distribution of subjects, potential risk factors for obesity, and intervention method for obesity management were documented. The associations between obesity and dietary factors were summarized. Results: The overall number of research studies has increased since 2000 but obesity management studies have decreased in recent years. Most of the studies used a cross-sectional design. Research on preschool children were extremely limited. Intervention studies targeting males were prevalent. The most significant variables relevant to dietary habits were speed of eating, regular breakfast and snacking. The most significant food and nutrient intake factors were thiamin and iron. Intakes of cereals and animal foods were significantly higher in obese children than the counterparts. Conclusions: The present review of locally published articles on the obesity status in children and adolescents suggested the need for well-designed further studies focused on risk factors of obesity and on a range of intervention methods conducive to the development of obesity prevention and management programs.

  • Objectives : Recently the number of obesity population has grown, the idea recognizing obesity as an obvious disease which needs medical treatments has increased too. Obesity has become a rising and serious issue of public health in many developed countries. In this study, analyzing 15 recent Chinese research papers written about obesity treatment, we tried to understand the recent trend in obesity treatment in China; and examine the special features and curative rates of their treatment. Methods : We searched recent research papers which was related to obesity. Search pool includes 9198 papers on 5 Chinese journal, 2302 papers on zhongyizazhi(中醫雜誌), 1826 papers on zhongsiyijehezazhi(中西醫結合雜紙), 2389 papers on xinzhongyi(新中醫), 1069 papers on shanghaizhongyiyazazhi(上海中醫藥雜紙), 1612 papers on zhejiangzhongyizazhi(淅江中醫藥雜). First, we searched with the term '肥'. Among the search results, we selected the papers containing the term '肥滿' or ', and excluded the other papers which had no direct relation to obesity.(e.g., ' '肥厚性' etc.) In this way, 21 papers were selected, 18 papers satisfied our study object. Among them we adopted 15 clinical papers for our study, excluding 3 experimental papers. Results : Acupuncture therapy; the rate of excellent curative effect ranges from 9.4% to 77.8%, that of curative effect from 68.7% to 94.3%. Herbal therapy; the rate of excellent curative effect ranges from 6.5% to 52.3%, that of curative effect from 72% to 93.8%. Combined method; the rate of excellent curative effect is 44.8%, that of curative effect 83.5%. Conclusions : These results provides evidence that acupuncture therapy is the most effective among acupuncture therapy, herbal therapy and combined method in treatment of obesity. In addition, acupuncture therapy that uses a small number of acupoints and strong stimulation is more effective than any other therapies.

  • Obesity is a worldwide epidemic as well as being a major risk factor for diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and several types of cancers. Obesity is mainly due to the overgrowth of adipose tissue arising from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure. Adipose tissue, primarily composed of adipocytes, plays a key role in maintaining whole body energy homeostasis. In view of the treatment of obesity and obesity-related diseases, it is critical to understand the detailed signal transduction mechanisms of adipogenic differentiation. Adipogenic differentiation is tightly regulated by many key signal cascades, including insulin signaling. These signal cascades generally transfer or amplify the signal by using serial tyrosine phosphorylations. Thus, protein tyrosine kinases and protein tyrosine phosphatases are closely related to adipogenic differentiation. Compared to protein tyrosine kinases, protein tyrosine phosphatases have received little attention in adipogenic differentiation. This review aims to highlight the involvement of protein tyrosine phosphatases in adipogenic differentiation and the possibility of protein tyrosine phosphatases as drugs to target obesity.

  • This study investigates the progress of obesity in men from childhood to adulthood, by analyzing the measurement references from the 5th Size Korea. It also seeks to analyze the characteristics of obese figures through the comparison of body proportions to normal-weight people, to provide a basic reference for the development of new size categories and improved pattern grading. The age range is divided into three groups: children (2-7), teenagers (13-18), and adults (19-39). The results of research into the characteristics of body proportions of obese figures and the classification of different figure groups of obese people are as follows. The ratio between width and circumference for each part of the body was investigated according to body weight that was grouped into three different categories of low, normal, and obese body weights. The result demonstrated that in all the ranges of age, the obese groups had the lowest ratio between width and circumference in having a thick body shape. According to the results that compared the ratio of the circumference of each body part divided by the waist circumference, the obese group showed a low ratio that indicates that they have a bigger waist circumference than other parts of the body. Two factors are identified as contributing to obesity in analyzing the ratio of the circumference of body parts divided by waist circumference. Using the factor loadings of the upper and lower body obesity, a cluster analysis was carried out and three different categories of obesity were defined; lower body obesity, abdominal obesity, and upper body obesity. The obese groups of children and teenagers were mostly in body shape with lower obesity and abdominal obesity, whereas the adults group showed the obesity present in the upper body obesity that have fewer cases in lower body obesity.
