Increasing body weight is closely associated with increasing risk for glucose intolerance and type II diabetes. Especially, abdominal distribution of weight and visceral obesity also seriously increase the morbidity and mortality. Dietary program including very-low-calorie diet(VLCD) is regarded as most effective in the control of obesity and diabetes, which mainly due to calorie restriction rather than weight loss itself. We are reporting a case of diabetes with obesity whose fast glucose was over 220 mg/dl and BMI was $25.1kg/m^2$(fat rate 32.8%, WHR 0.9). She was prescribed VLCD and oriental medical diet program. After 10 days of hospitalization, her glucose level dropped dramatically with 3kg loss of body weight She has further lost her weight until about 53kg, but the glucose level ceased to go down probably due to loosened calorie restriction.
Objectives : This study examined search on how the obesity indices, that are largely used in clinics such as waist circumference(WC), body mass index(BMI) and waist-hip ratio(WHR), are related to the visceral fat that was measured from abdominal computed tomography(CT) and the ratio of visceral fat/subcutaneous fat. Then, two groups ware compared in order to find out which characteristics of ordinary adults relationship with the abdominal obesity. Two groups are divided as follows; ones who are obese based on the measurement of WC and the others who are obese based on the level of BMI. Methods : A group of 63 test subjects that were gathered in the oriental medical hospital of Kyung-Won university is divided into two groups; ones (n=51, general obesity; group A) who have $BMI{\geq}25$ and $WC{\geq}85$, and the others (n=12, abdominal obesity; group B) who have BMI<25 and $WC{\geq}85$. Then, each group's obesity indices, abdominal CT, lipid level, glucose, adiponectin, leptin and C-reactive protein(CRP) are compared. In addition, subjects are again divided into two to examine the characteristics; ones (n=14, visceral obesity; group C) with visceral obesity based on the ratio between visceral fat and subcutaneous fat measured through abdominal CT, and the others (n=38, non-visceral obesity; group D) who are obese but not viscerally obese. Results & Conclusions : As a measurement that applies abdominal visceral fat and subcutaneous fat, BMI and WC can be considered as an appropriate obesity index while WHR cannot appropriately apply the abdominal fat amount. Moreover, the study indicates that abdominal obesity group based on the ratio of visceral fat/subcutaneous fat has more significant difference than the abdominal obesity group based on the WC in case of blood lipid index.
This study was conducted to investigate the differences in environmental and psychological factors in children with obesity and to offer useful information for obesity treatment and prevention. 123 children of 5-6th grade in elementary school and their mothers were included in this study and divided into either the obese group and normal group(obese group: 61, normal group: 62) according to the Weight-Length Index(WLI). Results showed that between the two groups there no significant differences in family income, mother's occupation status, educational level, and anthropometric measurement. Nutritional knowledge in the obese group was significantly higher than that of the normal group(p<0.05). The mothers of children with obesity had a higher level of nutritional knowledge than the mothers of normal children(p<0.05). There were no significant differences in food behavior between the obese and normal groups. There were no significant differences in maternal child-rearing practices and in maternal attitude on flood behavior of children. Considering psychological factors ; 72.1% of the children with obesity appraised their body image as obese(p<0.05), and 54.1% of the mothers in obese group perceived their child's body shape as obese(p<0.05). The level of self-esteem were not significantly different when compared between the obese and normal groups. From these results, it was suggested that effective measures for obesity treatment and prevention should include nutritional monitoring, and such efforts need to be maintained in order to help the obese children and their mothers.
The prevalence of obesity in children has steadily risen during recent years in developed countries. Child obesity has become a major concern to health providers since it has grown to epidemic proportions over the past few decades. This study was conducted to investigate the biochemical status, dietary habits and life styles according to the obesity degree among obese children residing in the Gyungbuk area. The subjects were 148 elementary school students (boy 103, girl 45) and classified as mildly obese (n = 56), moderately obese (n = 61) and severely obese (n = 31) by the obesity index. The average body weight and height increased significantly according to the obesity degree (p < 0.05, p < 0.001). Serum cholesterol concentration came under the normal level in all groups. Serum AST activity increased according to the obesity degree but it was not significant. Serum ALT activity increased according to the obesity degree (p < 0.05). Dietary habit score was lower significantly according to the obesity degree (p < 0.01). Life style of the subjects was significantly different for the level of 'healthy state (p < 0.05)', 'body perception (p < 0.01)', 'watching TV and video (p < 0.05)', 'normal sleeping hour (p < 0.05)' and 'degree of stress (p < 0.05)' according to the obesity degree. A positive relationship between obesity index and blood pressure, ALT has been shown in the subjects. Obesity index and dietary habit scores were negatively associated. Therefore, these results suggest that a practical nutrition-exercise education program for the prevention of child obesity should be provided to elementary school children. The objective of this study was to investigate the fit preference for ready-to-wear clothes(jackets and slacks) of adult men and to determine the respective differences by the age range and obesity level. The study method was a questionnaire survey with 465 male subjects aged from 20 to 59 years old. The questionnaire was composed of fit preference tendency, physical measurements, age, and occupation. The findings were as follows. 1. Regarding the fit preferred for each part of jackets and slacks, among ready-to-wears, the 'thing with some extra width' in every part was most favored, followed by the 'thing fitting perfectly'. 2. Differences were found in the fit preference tendency by the age of adult men. The fit preference tendency was higher among those in their 20's than among those of the other age ranges. 3. Differences were also found in the fit preference tendency by the obesity level of adult men. The fit preference tendency was higher in the order of the emaciation, normalcy, and obesity types. 4. The fit preference tendency was more affected by age than by obesity level. Clothing companies should consider ease to offer the proper clothing desired by consumers.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the level of obesity and sarcopenia among chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) patients in Korea. The current study recruited 75 patients with COPD who visited the department of respiratory medicine at J University Hospital in J-do. Height, body weight, waist circumference, and hip circumference were measured, and body composition, muscle strength, and flexibility were assessed. The levels of obesity were classified with body mass index(BMI), waist-hip circumference ratio(WHR) and percent body fat, and sarcopenia was classified with the value of skeletal muscle mass and muscle strength by Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia. In results, it was found that the level of obesity was very high as 43% by BMI, 88% by WHR, and 64% by percent body fat. The lower level of muscle strength was 15.50% in males and 23.50% in females. The lower level of muscle mass was 24.10% in males and .00% in females. Males who had one sarcopenia factors were 22.40%, and females were 23.50%, respectively. Males with sarcopenia were 6.90%, and females were .00%. In conclusion, regular resistance exercise is essential not only for the development of motor skills, but also for the normalization of skeletal muscle function and prevention of muscle dystrophy among COPD patients.
Objectives: The aim of this study is to establish the association of GNB3 with obesity-index, blood pressure, glucose and lipid level. Methods: A total of 209 Korean obese subjects participated in the study. Body weight, body mass index(BMI), waist circumference, body fat, body fat mass, resting metabolic rate, blood pressure, total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein, triglyceride and fasting blood sugar test were measured by using standardized protocols. The GNB3 was genotyped by using polymerase chain reaction with restriction fragment length polymorphism. Results: The frequency of CC, CT, TT genotype were, respectively, 18,2%, 56.9%, 24,9%, and the frequency of T allele was 53.3% in Korean obese population. There were no association of GNB3 with obesity index, blood pressure, glucose and lipid level in Korean obese population. Conclusions: Obese Korea population have a higher frequency of T alle than general Korean population. There are no association of GNB3 with obesity index, blood pressure, glucose and lipid level in Korean obese population.
The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which sociodemographic and health related life-style variables explain body weight distribution and to understand weight contol behavior. To study this study 298 students were selected, it was consisted of obesity group(101) and control group(197). The average age of subjects was 14.2 and the prevalence of obesity was 2-3 per class as 5.6% among 1,793. 71% among same subject was showed higher weight pattern than last one year, ovesity group which was obesity both in 93 and 94 was 34%. Correlation between body weight(under weight/obesity) and independent variables including sociodemographic factor and health- related life style tested through Multiple Classification Analysis was very significant, explained 36% of the total variance. Sociodemografic and hereditary factors such as education level, age of father and physical features of parents, life style factors as exercise preference and perceived health status showed highly contribution to body weight. Concretely, there were showed a higher obesity prevalence tendency when education level and age of father was high, physical features of parents was obesity. In otherwise, there were showed a higher underweight prevalence tendency when education level and age of father was low. Experience rates of weight control was 53% generally, 84% in obesity group, and 11% in underweight group. There were utilized weight control behaviors through diet method mainly in obesity group, diet and exercise methods in underweight group. There were showed that underweight group are prefer exercise to obesity group. Conclusionally, These findings suggest that education, age, physical features of parents, exercise preference and perceived health status is important factors related to body weight among middle school girls. Therefore, there will be considered as valuable factors when we practice health education and consultation related to body weight. Furthermore it is necessary to provide of various informations about weight control and to develop systematic weight control program.

Purpose : To investigate the effects of exercise combined with behavior modification therapy on the degree of obesity. blood lipid level and self-esteem in obese middle aged women. Method : 18 obese middle-aged women volunteers with a BMI over 30% were assigned to exercise combined with behavior modification therapy (n=9) or to a control group(n=9). For the intervention the experiment group used walking outdoors as excercise and behavior modification therapy for 12 weeks. Result Body weight, BMI, TC, TG, LDL-C, and % TC/HDL-C were significantly decreased in experimental group. Changes in HDL-C and self-esteem were significantly increased in the experimental group. Conclusion : This study provides evidence that regular exercise combined with behavior modification is effective in changing the degree of obesity, blood lipid level and self esteem in obese middle-aged women over 12 weeks.
Metabolic syndrome (MS) was defined as condition in which the subjects have two or more abnormalities among obesity, hyperlipidemia, hypertension and hyperglycemia. To develop a nutritional education program for MS, this study was performed to compare the dietary habits and nutrients intake of complex symptoms of MS with obesity or hyper-glycemia. The participants in this study were 84 normal adults,62 MS with obesity, 33 MS with hyperglycemia and 54 MS with obesity and hyperglycemia (OB + HG). A dietary survey was conducted using 24-hour recall method. Total cholesterol level of MS with obesity group was significantly higher than other groups. WHR and systolic blood pressure showed no significant difference among MS with obesity, hyperglycemia and OB+HG groups. Dietary intakes of energy, Fe, Vit A, Vit $B_2$ and Ca were less than $75\%$ of 7th Korean RDA in the all groups. Especially, dietary intakes of Vit $B_2$, Vit A and Ca were less than $50\%$ of RDA in MS with hyperglycemia and OB+HG groups. The other nutrient intakes of each group were also below the RDA level except for P, Vit C. It appeared that most of the nutrient intakes in MS with hyperglycemia and OB + HG groups were significantly lower than normal group. In MS with obesity group, each consumption of sweet, organ meat and soup was higher than other groups. Each consumption of garlic and onion in MS with obesity, hyperglycemia and OB + HG groups was lower than normal group. Also, each consumption of soup in MS with hyperglycemia and OB + HG groups was higher than normal group. Indices of nutritional quality (INQ) for Ca, Vit A and Vit $B_2$ were below 1 in all the groups. Food composition group score of MS with hyperglycemia group was significantly lower than normal and MS with obesity groups. Our results indicated that nutritional education program for MS with obesity or hyperglycemia should include specific strategies to modify unsound dietary habits and inappropriate food intake for health.
