This study analyses "Survey of Health and Behavior of Children and Adolescents" which is conducted by National Youth Policy Institute that investigated influential factors in difference between actual obesity and perceptional obesity. GLM (Generalized Linear Mode) was carried out to estimate the effects on the eating habits and physical activities and multinomial logit analysis was carried out to examine the influential factors in difference between actual, obesity and perceptional obesity. The results of this study are shown as follows. First 72.0% of total respondents showed the congruence between actual obesity and perceptional obesity and 24.6% of total respondents perceived them fatter than actual. The remaining 3.5% perceived them thinner than actual. Second, the main effects of actual obesity and perceptional obesity on eating habits were statistically significant, but interaction effect between them was not statistically significant. The main effects of actual obesity and perceptional obesity on physical activities and interaction effect between them were all statistically significant. Third, the influential factors in difference between actual obesity and perceptional obesity were gender, age, school record, education of parents, subjective economic status, and living together with family.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the mediating effects of obesity perception in the relationship between the mother's psychological control and the child's obesity stress. Questionnaires regarding the mother's psychological control, obesity perception and the child's obesity stress were administered to 1200 4th and 6th grade elementary school students in the province of Seoul, South Korea. Finally 1006 questionnaires were collected and statistically analyzed through Cronbach's, t-test, multiple linear regression analysis and stepwise regression. The main results of the study were as follows: 1) There were difference between the effects of the mother's psychological control, obesity perception, and child's obesity stress in terms of the sex, grade and obesity level of the child. 2) The mother's psychological control, obesity perception, and obesity level had an effect on the child's obesity stress. 3) As the result of searching for the mediating effects of obesity perception in the relationship between the mother's psychological control and the child's obesity stress.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of a obesity management program on BMI, body composition, knowledge, perception and attitudes, mood and exercise habits in obese elementary school children with the goal of developing nursing interventions to promote a healthy lifestyle. Method: The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pre-post test. The content of the 8-week obesity management program included obesity education, diet control education, behavioral modification education, counseling, hand-reflexo massage, and exercise. Participants were 36 obese children who were students in elementary schools in K city. Data collection was done from October $4^{th}$ to November $28^{th}$, 2005. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-test. Results: After the students received the obesity management program, their BMI scores were significantly lowered, and scores for mood and excercise habits were significantly improved. Conclusion: The results show this obesity management program is effective in changing the BMI, mood, and behavioral modifications in obese students. The results suggest that this program be utilized to manage obesity in obese children, and that this study be replicated to compare an experimental group with a control group in order to verify the effects of the obesity management program.
Objectives: This study was performed to identify the socioeconomic factors, the psychosocial factors and the heath behavior factors that have an influence on abdominal obesity, as measured by using the waist circumference. Methods: Data was obtained from individuals aged above 20 years who had their waist circumference measured on the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2001, which was a cross-sectional health survey. Results: Regression analysis of the factors that affect abdominal obesity showed that the education level, income, smoking, duration of smoking, drinking consumption, frequency of exercises and sleeping were the associated factors for abdominal obesity. For men, the duration of smoking, education level, income and drinking consumption were the associated factors for abdominal obesity. For woman, the education level, income, duration of smoking, drinking consumption and frequency of exercise were the associated factors for abdominal obesity. Conclusions: Abdominal obesity is a risk factor for morbidity and mortality, and it is associated with chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Based on the findings, it is essential to modify heath behaviors for preventing abdominal obesity, which is a condition associated with the incidence of chronic disease.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between the obesity rate in elementary school students in Daejeon and the relevant factors such as social-demographical factors, genetic factors, birth factors, diet factors and intelligence factors. Methods: For the research, 443 fourth grade students, 405 fifth grade students and 417 sixth grade students from six elementary schools in Daejeon Metropolitan City Participated in this study and classified into three groups: normal-weight group, mild obesity group, and moderate or severe obesity group. Results: The total obesity rate of the elementary school students in the school district of Daejeon Metropolitan City was 14.2%; the rate of mild obesity was 7.2%; the rate of moderate obesity was 5.5%; and the rate of severe obesity was 1.5%. The obesity rate of surveyed boys was 16.9%, and the obesity rate of girls was 11.1%. The significant factors for girls' obesity were fathers' EMI, mothers' EMI, living standards, constant demand of foods, preference for greasy foods, frequency of eating snacks, and daily walking hours. It was found that students' subjective mind and objective health index were related to obesity. In the case of obese students, they had more concern about their health and more stress from the dissatisfaction of their physical appearance than normal students. Conclusions: From the above evidences, it is apparent that the obesity of elementary school students has strong relations with eating habits rather than physical activities. It is to be hoped that obesity prevention programs such as effective meal guidance. parental guidance for watching TV, and intense physical activities will be included in the curriculums of health education for elementary school students.
The aim of this study was to determine the extent to which sociodemographic and health related life-style variables explain body weight distribution and to understand weight contol behavior. To study this study 298 students were selected, it was consisted of obesity group(101) and control group(197). The average age of subjects was 14.2 and the prevalence of obesity was 2-3 per class as 5.6% among 1,793. 71% among same subject was showed higher weight pattern than last one year, ovesity group which was obesity both in 93 and 94 was 34%. Correlation between body weight(under weight/obesity) and independent variables including sociodemographic factor and health- related life style tested through Multiple Classification Analysis was very significant, explained 36% of the total variance. Sociodemografic and hereditary factors such as education level, age of father and physical features of parents, life style factors as exercise preference and perceived health status showed highly contribution to body weight. Concretely, there were showed a higher obesity prevalence tendency when education level and age of father was high, physical features of parents was obesity. In otherwise, there were showed a higher underweight prevalence tendency when education level and age of father was low. Experience rates of weight control was 53% generally, 84% in obesity group, and 11% in underweight group. There were utilized weight control behaviors through diet method mainly in obesity group, diet and exercise methods in underweight group. There were showed that underweight group are prefer exercise to obesity group. Conclusionally, These findings suggest that education, age, physical features of parents, exercise preference and perceived health status is important factors related to body weight among middle school girls. Therefore, there will be considered as valuable factors when we practice health education and consultation related to body weight. Furthermore it is necessary to provide of various informations about weight control and to develop systematic weight control program.
The purpose of the study was to investigate the status of the nutritional education program on educational perception, facilities, contents and systems, which were focused on the school obesity education in the elementary school. A five point Likert scale was used to evaluate the importance and performance of each item in four sections of the survey and Importance-Performance Analysis (IPA; gap between importance and performance) matrix analysis was applied to determine improvement priority. The findings from IPA matrix analysis are in the following. The items of the sections to be improved intensively are recognition of parents and in-charge teacher, availability of the education place, preparation of consulting room, preparation of various teaching media, interest of an education program, meal adjustment of overweight children, combination with education and exercise, education for psychological factors, development of scientific and systematic education program and reduction of meal service duty for education. Accordingly, the IPA matrix analysis suggested that an intensive improvement area should be excessively concentrated on for better performance. The regional gap between importance and performance showed significant difference for textbook and diet of overweight children in Kyunggi-Do. There were significant differences for the government perception, dietary habits and food-life education, fast-food education, education for breakfast importance, and education of school meal indication system and method to read food nutrition indication in Chollabuk-Do. As for the age gap between importance and performance, the twenties showed significantly bigger gaps in perception of school dietitians and linking between school meals and diet education. Therefore, more proactive efforts for the education for obesity prevention are necessary to prevent childhood obesity in elementary school and to help children to possess better health throughout their entire lives.
Objectives: Despite the considerable interest in the increase in obesity particularly of socially disadvantaged group in Korea, how obesity varies according to various socio-demographic characteristics still remains largely unanswered. To further develop the understanding of obesity in Korea, the present study focuses on the possibility that the relationship between educational attainment and obesity varies across age. Methods: Using 2010 Korea National Health & Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES), this study divides the adults into male and female groups and examines the interaction effect of age and educational attainment on obesity through binominal logit models for each group. Results: The most educated male group is more likely to be obese than those who did not complete high school. And the relationship between male's educational attainment and obesity does not significantly change across age. In contrast to male's obesity pattern, female educational attainment has a significant negative association with obesity. The gap in obesity across educational groups converges after middle ages in female. Conclusions: Health policies should pay more attention to those who are more vulnerable to obesity risk in order to effectively reduce obesity.
A sample of 450 women who attended a physical fitness program in the Ulsan area was selected to study some environmental factors associated with obesity. The women were grouped into two categories, obese and nonobese, based on body mass index(kg/$m^2$). Average BMI of the total subjects was 24.3$\pm$4.8, but 34.7% of the subjects rated equal to or ore than 25 type, which can be considered as obese. The results showed that age, employment status, family type, and food frequency score have a statistically significant association with obesity. However, education level, nutrition knowledge, availability of housemaids, family history of obesity, and house type are not related to obesity . There were no differences in sources of nutrition information between the obese and the nonobese. The above results suggest that health education programs should consider environmental factors as well as health factors in preventing obesity obesity in the community.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to develop the children obesity prevention program and to analyze how this program has an effect on students' degree of knowledge, attitude for obesity prevention. Methods: The study design was Compromise Experience Group Pre-Post Design. 238 students in the 4th and 5th grade of 4 elementary schools in Seoul were nonrandomly assigned to the study group(n=115) or the control group(n=113). The Program was applied for 3 times and surveys were conducted 2 times as pre-test and post-test. Results: 1. The obesity prevention CD-ROM was developed by analyzing of learners and educational facilities, selecting the study object and contents and producing educational methods and materials. The study contents were included definition, types, factors and side-effects of obesity, and It was contained dietary habit, exercise and life style for obesity prevention and healthy life. 2. Demographic characteristics were not significantly different between study group and control group. Among the subjects investigated, 27.8% of the study group and 38.1% of the control group stated that they had experienced in the obesity prevention program in past. 3. The obesity knowledge and attitude score after this obesity prevention program were improved significantly than before the program(P<0.001). Conclusion: The CD-ROM developed in this study for the children obesity prevention program was proven to be effective in improving obesity knowledge, attitude for the obesity prevention.
