Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of lifestyle modification program on body composition and metabolic syndrome makers, depression in obese postmenopausal women. Method: The research design of this study included a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The lifestyle modification program was administered twice a week for 12 weeks the experimental group, whereas the control group had no program. The experimental group consisted of 22 obese postmenopausal women while the control group contained 19 subjects. The study also attempted to measure the effects of the program on body composition, metabolic syndrome markers, and depression in obese postmenopausal women. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and a t-test using the SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: After participating in the lifestyle modification program, the experimental group showed statistically significant decreases in systolic pressure, diastolic pressure and depression, but no change in body composition. Conclusions: The result of this study show that the lifestyle modification program had a significant impact on obese postmenopausal women. In the future, it is necessary to offer more tailed program for a longer period.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the eating patterns, nutrient intakes, blood levels, and health status of male college students in Seoul according to body mass index (BMI). In this study, we classified subjects into normal weight (n=240), under weight (n=11), and obese (n=46) groups according to BMI. The weight and BMI were significantly higher in the obese group compared to other groups (p<0.0001). The obesity was associated with overeating and frequent eating. The under weight group showed significantly higher consumption of fast food, snacks, and fried foods compared to the other groups (p<0.05). The intakes of milk, meat, fish, eggs, and fried food and preference ratios were higher in the obese group (p<0.05). The male college students in this study showed insufficient intakes of calories, vitamin C, folic acid, and calcium. The plasma LDL-cholesterol levels in the obese group were higher compared to the other groups. In conclusion, intake of nutrients among male college students is found to be insufficient and requires nutritional education. The under weight group showed regular eating habits and increased nutrient intake. The obese group was shown to need more exercise with higher intakes of vegetables and fruits.
This study was carried out to find out stress-eating relationship in obese high school girls and to investigate the factors related to stress-induced eating. The conceptual framework used in this study was individual difference model. The research method was methodological triangulation. The data of the study were collected from purposively sampled 309 normal high school girls and 314 obese high school girls in S city. 15 volunteers, obese high school girls, enrolled in this qualitative research. Quantitative data was collected from May 6 to June 10, 1997 through questionnaires about stress and stress-related eating changes and from June 23 to August 26, 1997, qualitative data was collected. The results of the study were as follows : 1. Obese high school girls were unaffected by stress(t=-1.84, p=0.0662). 2. Through quantitative analysis, obese people divided into two groups in their response to stress. One group was composed of stress- eater. The other group was composed of non- stress eater. 3. Disinhibition(t=-3.1275, p=0.0019), cognitive restrain (t=-3.1597, p=0.0017), hunger(t=-3.5878, p=0.0004) were significantly different between stress-eaters and non-stress eaters. 4. According to the interview, 5 subjects of obese girls were stress eaters, and 10 subjects were non-stress eaters. Through qualitative research, the related factors of eating were eating attitude & behavior, stimuli situations on eating, and personality. In stress-eater group, they constantly went on a diet, however, they were prompted to eat when an uneasy feeling such as anxiety, depression, annoyance developed. Their personality were entirely optimistic. Whereas non-stress eater group had no interest in diet and didn't appear to have psychological factors to stimulate eating in stressful situations. Their personality was not only optimistic but also keenly characteristic. 5. To compare obese-normal high school girls on the effect of stress in eating. Normal weigh high school girls decreased their eating when stressed(t= -13.62, p=0.0001). In conclusion, this study suggests that there are two different groups in obese high school girls in regards to eating responses on stressful situations. As a result of these finding, clinical and school nurses can detect the stress-eaters who need stress management intervention, and can apply appropriate management program according to the individual needs.
Objectives: Obesity is a growing epidemic with subsequent health consequences leading not only to reduced quality of life but also to increased medical costs. Recently nutritional balances are emphasized in the field of obesity, and especially maintaining proper equilibriums of minerals. The correlation of minerals obtained from the method of HTMA(Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis) with obese degree has not been studied in Korea yet. We studied any significant difference of mineral concentrations and components according to the obese degree. Methods: 78 subjects were analyzed who visited Garosero clinic of oriental medicine to lose their weight from June to November 2004. We used BMI(Body Mass Index), PBF(Percent Body Fat), WHR(Waist-Hip Ratio) and abdominal circumference obtained by bio-electrical impedance analysis as an obese degree. And we analyzed correlation with mineral concentrations and ratios obtained from HTMA. Results & Conclusion: 1. Na, K, Zn, Se had significant correlation with obese degree in case of nutritional minerals from HTMA. Especially, K had high significance. 2. Toxic minerals from HTMA had no significance with obese degree. 3. Rb had significant correlation with obese degree in case of additional minerals from HTMA. 4. Among important ratios from HTMA, Na/K had significant correlation with obese degree, but Ca/K had correlation except PBF, and Na/Mg had correlation except WHR. 5. Among toxic ratios from HTMA, Se/Hg had significant correlation with obese degree, but S/Hg had correlation except BMI. 6. Na, K, Zn, Rb, Na/K, Ca/K had significant differences between obesity groups classfied by BMI. Ob II group had sinificant difference from NW group in cases of K, Zn, Rb, Na/K, and Ob II group had sinificant difference from OW group in case of Ca/K.
Purpose: Tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) polymorphism has been suggested to play an important role in the pathogenesis of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in obese adults, and known to be a mediator of insulin resistance. In this study, we evaluated the role of TNF-${\alpha}$ promoter polymorphisms and insulin resistance in the development of NAFLD in obese children. Methods: A total of 111 obese children (M:F=74:37; mean age, $11.1{\pm}2.0$ yrs) were included. The children were divided into 3 groups: controls (group I, n=61), children with simple steatosis (group II, n=17), and children with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (group III, n=33). Serum TNF-${\alpha}$ levels, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), and TNF-${\alpha}$ -308 and -238 polymorphisms were evaluated. Results: There were no differences in TNF-${\alpha}$ polymorphism at the -308 or the -238 loci between group I and group II + III ($p$=0.134 and $p$=0.133). The medians of HOMA-IR were significantly different between group I and group II + III ($p$=0.001), with significant difference between group II and group III ($p$=0.007). No difference was observed in the HOMA-IR among the genotypes at the -308 locus ($p$=0.061) or the -238 locus ($p$=0.207) in obese children. Conclusion: TNF-${\alpha}$ promoter polymorphisms at the -308 and -238 loci were not significantly associated with the development of NAFLD in children; nevertheless, insulin resistance remains a likely essential factor in the pathogenesis of NAFLD in obese children, especially in the progression to NASH.
The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in body fat distribution between normal and obese subjects and the relationship between risk factors(fasting blood sugar, blood pressure. fasting serum lipids) and obesity. Measurements of height. weight, skinfold thickness. body circumference. percent body fat. blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and serum lipids were made and a dietary survey was performed on 120(Males 61. Females 59) adult subjects. 1) Among the female subjects, the obese group appeared to have significantly higher centrality of body fat than the normal group. Obese groups of both sexes appeared with higher blood pressure than normal groups. No differences in daily average nutrient intake, fasting blood sugar and fasting serum lipids concentrations were observed between obese and normal groups. 2) In males. the serum triglyceride concentration was observed to have a significantly positive correlation to body weight, body mass index and body circumference, additionally concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol were observed to have significantly positive correlations to the skinfold thickness. but the ratio of HDL-cholesterol/total cholesterol was observed to be significantly negatively correlated to the skinfold thickness. 3) In females. the obese group consumed about 47% of total energy intake at lunch. whereas the normal group consumed about 29% . The food habit score of males appeared to be negatively related to body weight, percent ideal body weight. But the food habit score of females appeared to be negatively related to percent body fat(r=-0.32, p<0.05) .
Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) is a common condition in obese children. However, its effect on glucose and lipid metabolism in obese children remains controversial. Purpose: The present study aimed to investigate the association between SH and metabolic parameters. Methods: A total of 215 obese children and adolescents aged 6-18 years were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study. The patients' anthropometric measurements such as thyrotropin (TSH), free thyroxine (fT4), fasting plasma glucose, and insulin levels, as well as homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index, and lipid profiles were evaluated. The patients were allocated to the SH group (fT4 normal, TSH 5-10 mIU/L) (n=77) or the control group (fT4 normal, TSH<5 mIU/L) (n=138). The glucose and lipid metabolisms of the 2 groups were compared. Results: SH was identified in 77 of 215 patients (36%). Mean body mass index was similar in both groups. The mean serum insulin, HOMA-IR, and triglyceride (TG) levels were higher and the mean high-density lipoprotein cholesterol level was lower in the SH group than in the control group (P=0.007, P=0.004, P=0.01, and P=0.02, respectively). A positive correlation was observed between TSH level and insulin level, HOMA-IR, and TG level. Conclusion: SH was identified in some of the obese children and adolescents. A clear association was observed between SH, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia in obese children.
The objectives of this study were to classify body types of 40s, 50s, 60s obese women according to body measurements and to investigate relationships between age and body types of obese women. Body measurement was made on 497 obese women in their 40s, 50s, 60s whose BMI (Body Mass Index) was 25.0 or more when directly measured in 'Size Korea 2004'. Data were analyzed through factor analysis, cluster analysis, Pearson's correlation coefficient, $X^2$-test, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and Duncan's multiple range test. First. the obesity group with BMI being 25.0-30.0 was composed of 23.1% subjects in their 40s, 43.3% subjects in their 50s, and 50.0% subjects in their 60th, which demonstrates that the older subjects were, the higher the distribution was. Adding the high obesity group with BMI being more than 30.0 to the obesity group, women in their 60s were 56.7%, the most of obese bodies. Second, factor analysis of obese women's BMIs revealed that five factors were elicited, including upper-body circumference related factor, height related factor, lower-body circumference related factor, upper-body width related factor, and upper-body related factor. As a result of analyzing the clusters, three types of body shapes were classified including upper-lower obesity, upper obesity, and lower obesity. Third, obese women were thicker or wider than non-obese individuals in those factors including upper-body circumference, lower-body circumference, and body width, and longer in upper-body length, while non-obese individuals were higher or longer than obese individuals in height related factors.
The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and to examine the eating habits of elementary school students in Kwangju. The study was carried out on 931 students(male : 454, female : 477) in September and October of 1996. The results are summarized as follows ; Obesity was defined as body mass index(BMI) that exceeds 20. The rate of obesity was 10.0%(male 4.7$\%$, female 5.3$\%$) in subjects. Subjects were divided into 3 groups : normal group(BMI〈20), mildly obese group(20〈BMI〈25), and moderatly obese group(25〈BMI〈30), respectively. With regard to frequency of skipping breakfast, 9.1$\%$ of normal children and 17.5$\%$ of mildly obese children and 33.3$\%$ of moderately obese children had skipping every morning(p$\ll$0.001). With regard to the regularity of meal time, 62.1$\%$ of normal children had ‘regular meals’but 58.0$\%$ of mild obese children and 50.0$\%$ of moderate obese children had‘irregular meals’(p$\ll$0.05). With regard to meal volume, obese children consumed much more meal volume than normal children(breakfast p$\ll$0.001, lunch p〈0.005, dinner p$\ll$0.001). With regard to try to lose weight, 22.9$\%$ of normal children and 55.6$\%$ of mild obese children and 83.3$\%$ of moderated obese children indicated they had attempted(p$\ll$0.001). The results of this study showed that the prevalence of obesity in elementary school students in Kwangju has a tendency to be increased. Obese children need to correct their eating habits. This reasserts the importance of nutrition education in children through teachers, parents and dietitians. Purpose: In this study, we assessed the intake of nutrients and food groups and analyzed the nutrition quotient of obese children in South Korea. The hypothesis was that dietary quality and nutrient intake are related to the body mass index (BMI) of obese children. Methods: The participants included 48 children (20 boys and 28 girls). Based on the guidelines for the age-for-body mass index provided by the Korean National Growth Charts for children and adolescents, the participants were divided into 3 groups: overweight, BMI ≥ 85th percentile; obese, BMI ≥ 95th percentile; severely obese, BMI ≥ 99th percentile. Results: The energy distribution showed that the carbohydrate ratio was significantly higher in the overweight group (p < 0.01), whereas the fat ratio was significantly higher in the obese and severely obese groups (p < 0.05). Thus, in the overweight and obese groups, the percent body fat was negatively associated with the carbohydrate ratio (p < 0.05) but was positively associated with the fat ratio (p < 0.05). The Dietary Reference Intakes (DRI) data revealed that the intake levels of protein, vitamin B1, vitamin B12, and sodium were higher in all groups. Intakes of fiber, calcium, potassium, and magnesium were insufficient in all groups, and the DRI percent for protein was significantly higher in the obese and severely obese groups than in the overweight group. No significant differences were obtained in food group patterns or Nutrition Quotient (NQ) scores among the 3 groups. According to the evaluation results by food record and NQ, a significant difference was obtained in the dietary quality of obese children. Conclusion: We conclude that a higher intake of fat enhances weight gain. Based on the study results, we propose that the guidelines should consider the energy distribution of carbohydrate and fat intake to prevent and control obesity among Korean children.
