  • The purpose of this study is to collect fundamental data for adult female health improvement based on urban adult female obesity and cardiopulmonary function. Surveyed were 859 adult females who visited a health improvement center in D district in Seoul between April, 1999, and December, 1999, and the resulting data are as follows: 1. The adult female mean BMI was $23.97{\pm}3.11kgm^2$, which comes within the range of overweight. Among them, BMI of the females aged 41-60, and over 60, were significantly higher. Mean percentage of body fat was $32.07{\pm}4.63$, and it significantly increased in accordance with age, recording the highest among those aged over 60. 2. The systolic blood pressure significantly increased in accordance with age, recording highest among those aged over 60. Those aged 41-60 and over 60 showed significantly higher diastolic blood pressure than those in their 20s and 30s; however, they had a significantly lower heart rate. Vital capacity and maximum oxygen intake significantly decreased in accordance with age, and those aged over 60 were lowest. 3. As to health perception, 20.6% of the subjects perceived themselves as healthy, and those who perceived themselves as unhealthy showed significantly higher BMI than those who perceived themselves to be of moderate health. 4. There were no significant differences in blood pressure, heart rate and maximum oxygen intake in accordance with health perception, but those who perceived themselves as healthy showed significantly higher vital capacity than those who didn't. 5. As to cardiopulmonary function in accordance with obesity, the obese group showed significantly higher systolic blood pressure than those whose weight was normal to overweight. The diastolic blood pressure of the normal weight group was the lowest, while the obese group showed significantly lower vital capacity and maximum oxygen intake. These findings indicate that the womens' health promotion program must include an effective strategy for preventing obesity, and strengthening cardiopulmonary function.

  • Purpose: Our study aimed to evaluated sex differences in clinical features of obese high school students. Methods: One hundred three obese high school students (body mass index [BMI]${\geq}$85th percentile) and 51 control students (BMI<85th percentile) were enrolled in this study. Anthropometric measurements were performed. Fasting serum glucose, insulin, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and high-sensitive C-reactive protein were measured. Abdominal fat thickness, degree of fatty liver, and carotid intima-media thickness were measured by ultrasound. Results: In control and obese groups, waist circumference was significantly longer in boys but body fat mass was Significantly higher in girls. In the control group, total cholesterol and LDL-C were higher in girls. In the obese group, however, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase and triglyceride were higher and HDL-C was lower in boys. Preperitoneal fat thickness was significantly higher in obese girls. In obese group, the degree of fatty liver was significantly higher in boys. Carotid intima-media thickness was not significantly different between boys and girls. Conclusion: Obese adolescents had distinguishable sex differences in body measurements, metabolic abnormalities, abdominal fat thickness and fatty liver. We can infer that these characteristics may extend into adult obesity.

  • This study compared the nutrient intake of obese versus non-obese non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients for Diabetes Medical Nutrition Therapy. The study was conducted at medical hospitals in Gyeonggi and Seoul from April 2009 to November 2009. Fifty-six adult male NIDDM patients were enrolled and divided into two groups: 36 into an obese group (BMI ${\geq}25$) and 20 into a non-obese group (BMI<25). To conduct this study, anthropometric measurements, and daily nutrient intake of obese and non-obese NIDDM patients were measured. Daily nutrient intake was estimated by 24hr-recall and analyzed by the CAN program. In the results, anthropometric measurements of the two groups showed significant differences in weight and BMI (p<0.001). Daily nutrient intake of the two groups showed no significant differences, except for vitamin E intake (p<0.05). The total energy intake of the non-obese and obese groups were $2,669.9{\pm}964$ kcal and $2,555.4{\pm}803$ kcal, respectively, which were both above 113% of the recommended Dietary Reference Intakes for Korean (KDRIs). Cholesterol and sodium intake were $378.1{\pm}215.6$ mg and $6,478.9{\pm}2755.1$ mg, respectively for the non-obese group. Cholesterol and sodium intake were $308.1{\pm}155.6$ mg and $6,306.8{\pm}2788.9$ mg, respectively, for the obese group. Both groups were above 150% of the recommended levels set by the Korean Diabetes Association (KDA). However, their antioxidant nutrient intake was appropriate. Meanwhile, their fiber intake was $10.7{\pm}5.1$ g and $9.8{\pm}5.2$ g, respectively, which was lower than 40% of the recommended intake set by the KDA. The results show that the nutritional education for obese and non-obese NIDDM male patients must aim to reduce total energy, cholesterol, and sodium intake, while increasing fiber intake. In addition, the factors related to a patient's glycosylated hemoglobin, serum lipids, blood pressure, and weight change must be calibrated for the appropriate energy, fat, cholesterol, sodium, and dietary fiber intake.

  • To investigate the difference of sweating reaction on somato types. We measured total sweat rate, locl sweat rate, skin temperature, physiological reactions and psyschological reactions at $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $25{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ under laboratory conditions. Nine healthy adult females were divided into three somato types (slender(3), normal(3) and obese type(3)). The results were as follows; Total sweat rate was highest in obese type, and then comes normal type and slender type in order. Local sweat rate was highest in infrascapular area, and then breast, the back of the hand, upperarm, ant. leg, and ant. thigh in order in all somato types. Mean skin temperature was highest in slender type, and then normal type and obese type in order. Rectal temperature, blood pressure and pulse rate were highest in boese type. Psychological reactions were appeared 'hot' 'humid' 'sweat' as ambient temperature go up. And somato types make little difference in psychological reactions.

  • Obesity is a major nutritional problem in the developed countries. The prevalence of obesity may range from 10 to 50 per rent or mort of adult population and it may be increasing tendency. Many efforts have been made to understand the pathogenesis of obesity, but except a few metabolic obesities in the most of obese patients, the mechanisms are not understood. The treatment modalities of obesity, ranging from dietary and pubilc health intervention through the pharmacological and surgical therapy, have been developed and tested. In the obese patients mortalities and mobilities are significantly increased than non obese subjects due to hypertension, diabetics, and other problems. There are four possible mechanisms by which energy balance might be altered to enhance metabolic efficiency. futile metabolic pathway, alteration of protein rum over, alteration in sodium-potassium ATPase and alteration in uncoupled oxidation in brown adipose tissue are considered as possible mechanisms. Low calory and very low calory diets are recommended as a dietary program. Several pharmacological agent such as benzphetamine, fenfluramine, mazindol and fluoxetin are currently popular drugs for the treatment of obesity.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the perceptions of obesity among appearance-conscious women in their 20s. It is intended to provide data necessary to produce garments for obese body types by identifying adult women's subjective assessments of obese body types and characteristics. The data were analyzed using Q Methodology in the QUANL program for PC. Type 1 was recognized as uniformly fat in the abdomen, with almost the same width and thickness. Type 2 was perceived to have more fat in the upper body and back, broad shoulders, and an inverted body type. Type 3 was perceived as having a fat lower half of the body, hips wider than the chest, and large thighs. Type 4 was identified as having few curves and fat concentrated in the abdomen. Further research of other age groups and regions is needed to ascertain the difference between perceived and actual body types.

  • To explore the relationship between weight status and food intake pattern, the Nutrition Survey results of the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey were analyzed. Dietary intake data of Korean adults aged 20 to 64. years who participated in the 2001 National Health and Nutrition Survey, was used along with their demographic data. Subjects were classified into 4 groups based on the BMI value of subjects: underweight, normal, overweight and obese. For male adults, obese subjects had significantly higher mean intake of energy, protein, carbohydrates, and fat than normal subjects. In addition, obese male adults consumed more animal foods, especially more meats, than normal subjects. However, females obese subjects did not show higher intake of energy or fat. Although obese male adults showed higher energy intake, calcium and iron intake per 1000 kcal was lower than normal adults. Average calcium intake in females was low; about 70% of RDA regardless of obesity level. In addition, riboflavin and Vitamin A intake was lower in overweight and obese female than in normal females. Percentage of subjects with low fruit and vegetable intake (< 400 g per day) was also high in female subjects. These results showed that food and nutrient intake patterns of obese population were different between male and female adults. These dietary intake patterns need to be considered in developing and implementing nutrition policy and intervention programs to prevent and control obesity. Moreover, the National Survey and monitoring system should be developed for continuous and effective investigation on the relationship between obesity and dietary intake.

  • The trial was conducted to assess the impact of consulting through telephone on body weight reduction among 18 obese adult women. The degree of obesity, food intake pattern, and life style were examined through phone calls. Subjects visited our clinic and their body fat percentages were measured using impedance fat meter (model SIF-891), and were recommended and recorded to have a low calory diet with changes in the food habit and behavior. The study results are as follows: 1. There is a positive relationship between food habit, lifestyle, obese degree, and fat percentage. 2. 8-10kg and 5kg reductions in the body weight were observed among 14 subjects and 2 subjects, respectively. However, 2 subjects maintained their body weights. 3. The body reduction curve looked like a stairway (type) with low slope and was related with food intake amount. 4. It was possible to have the adequate protein intake only through the vegetable diet. 5. 15 out of 18 subjects were on the prescribed low calory diets for 3 days. Therefore, there is a time limitation to follow the diet treatment. 6. A body weight reduction altered dietary intake of foods which were rich in sweet taste, and the favorite foods were chocolate and candy.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in serum ferritin and leukocyte regarding overweight and obese South Korean adults. Methods: This study was conducted on 5,281 subjects older than 19, according to data from the Fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES V-3), 2015. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis (SPSS 24.0). Results: First, serum ferritin and leukocyte were higher regardubg obesity, followed by being overweight and within normal weight. Second, body mass index (BMI) was positively correlated with serum ferritin and leukocyte. Third, factors affecting serum ferritin were gender, and being obese and overweight. Explanatory power of the model was 26.2%. Factors affecting leukocyte were gender, obesity, being overweight, and weight change over the past year (weight gain). Explanatory power of the model was 10.2%. Conclusion: Obesity and being overweight were factors affecting serum ferritin and leukocyte, and obesity was more affected than being overweight in Koreans older than 19. In conclusion, serum ferritin was a marker of inflammation, rather than iron status, in overweight and obese Korean adults.
