Purpose: This systematic review was conducted to evaluate the clinical effects of Injinho-tang on hyperbilirubinemia in hepatobiliary disorders. Methods: We searched for randomized controlled clinical trials that had administered Injinho-tang as an intervention in the following medical databases: Public/Publisher MEDLINE (PubMed), Excerpta Medica dataBASE (EMBASE), Cochrane library, Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), ScienceON, Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS), and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI). Among the retrieved studies, only trials that met the inclusion criteria were selected, and serum total bilirubin values were extracted and analyzed from the finally selected trials. Results: The serum total bilirubin values of 1,302 patients with various hepatobiliary diseases were synthesized through a meta-analysis, which confirmed a decrease in serum total bilirubin of 21.03 𝜇mol/L (95% CI -29.58~-12.49, p<0.01) in the group administered with Injinho-tang compared with the control group. Conclusions: Injinho-tang is effective in alleviating hyperbilirubinemia in hepatobiliary diseases when administered with conventional treatment. However, the potential risk of bias, high heterogeneity among the included trials, and differences in herbal composition are limitations of the results of this meta-analysis.
Objective : To investigate the usage of Korean herbal medicine (KHM) for climacteric symptoms, this study reviewed clinical studies conducted in Korea. Method : Literature search was performed on three Korean database; OASIS, RISS and NDSL. Studies published before July 2023 were categorized and analyzed according to the study type and herbal prescriptions. Results : Fifty-eight studies including 7 controlled trial, 27 case series and 24 single case reports were included in our review and the total number of case patients was 420. 52 prescriptions based on syndrome identifications and 11 prescriptions of Sasang constitutions were used and the most frequently used prescriptions were Soyosan(逍遙散) and Guibitang(歸脾湯). Thirty-two prescriptions were also mentioned in previous delphi research or clinical practice guideline, and the rest were not. Thirty-five studies used acupuncture combined with KHM and 10 studies used pharmacopuncture and 5 studies used herbal hipbath. Conclusion : To increase the therapeutic effect of KHM and establish KHM as an alternative to hormone treatment, various prescriptions should be used according to syndrome identifications in the clinical field. High-quality RCTs on frequently used prescriptions and the development of various type of KHM are also necessary.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to analyze the acupuncture and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation(TENS) for tinnitus to identify the trend, effectiveness and mechanism. Methods : Research studies related to objectives were gathered through Pubmed, RISS, KISS, KCI, OASIS with keywords such as 'Tinnitus', 'Autonomic', 'ANS', 'HRV', 'acupuncture', 'transcutaneous' and analyzed. Results : 4 studies were included. Acupuncture was used in 1 study and TENS was used in 3 studies. Tinnitus handicap inventory(THI), fMRI and 'heart rate and blood pressure' were used in 1 study each and heart rate variability(HRV) was used in 3 studies as evaluation tools. Each treatment showed a significant effect. Conclusions : Our findings indicate that acupuncture and TENS could be a potential therapy for tinnitus, however additional well designed RCT are required to establish high level of evidence.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effectiveness and safety of herbal medicine treatment for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Methods: Researchers searched papers through 5 online databases including The Cochrane Library Central, Pubmed, China Academic Journal (CAJ), Oriental medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System (OASIS) and Korean studies Information Service System (KISS). Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that used herbal medicine as treatment were included. Results: Twenty three studies were selected by the selection and exclusion criteria. The treatment group was treated with herbal medicine alone or with herbal medicine and conventional medicine. The control group was treated with conventional medicine. Most common evaluation index was Bone Mineral Density (BMD) followed by total efficacy rate and level of bone metabolism markers, level of sex hormones, etc. Compared with the control group, the treatment group was more effective and safer in all of 23 studies. Conclusions: Herbal treatment alone could be an effective and safe option in treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. Moreover herbal treatment with conventional medicine could improve its therapeutic effect on postmenopausal osteoporosis as well.
Objectives: This study aimed to review the effects of Daoyin exercise on scoliosis in clinical studies. Methods: In this study, we reviewed 9 electronic databases (Pubmed, CAJ, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CiNii, KISS, KMBASE, OASIS, ScienceON) on May 22, 2021. We included only randomized controlled trials (RCTs) which evaluated the effect of Daoyin exercise on scolisos. The methodological quality of the included studies was checked using the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Results: After screening, eight RCTs fulfilled the inclusion criteria. The results of the meta-analysis showed that Daoyin exercise improves the measurement value of Cobb's angle, SRS-22, pulmoary function, physiological curvature, muscle strength, effective rate in scoliosis patients. Conclusion: We concluded that Daoyin exercise has therapeutic effects in relief of imbalance, improvement of symptoms, improvement of function, muscle strength for scoliosis. However, the quality of the original articles was low and the number of papers included were few. Thus, to confirm these results, further well-designed RCTs should be conducted.
Objectives : The purpose of this research is to review the efficacy and safety of taping therapy for facial palsy. Methods : Two foreign databases(Pubmed, CNKI) and one domestic database(OASIS) were used to search, and papers retrieved from the starting point of literature provision in each database until June 19, 2023 were included in the study. All studies in which other treatments were performed as a treatment intervention along with taping therapy were included, but cases where taping therapy was a comparative intervention were excluded. Results : 18 studies were selected. 14 studies were two-arm randomized controlled trials(RCT), and 4 studies were case reports. There was improvement in facial palsy in all 4 case reports, and in all 14 RCTs, the treatment effect in the observation group was significantly higher than in the control group. Conclusions : Taping therapy can be an effective and safe treatment method for facial palsy. However, the risk of bias in the selected studies was high, and there were many cases in which multiple interventions other than taping therapy were applied simultaneously. Therefore, well-designed studies with high quality are needed in the future.
Objectives: This review aimed at investigating the research trends of animal experiment on the acupuncture for premature ovarian failure (POF). Methods: Studies were searched from PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, CINK, KISS, RISS, OASIS, KMBASE up to November 2023. Terms as POF, acupuncture, electroacupuncture were used. Results: Of 189 screened, 13 studies are selected and analyzed. The combined results showed that treatment group was effective of improving serum sex hormones level, ovarian morphology, expression related mRNA and protein compared with control group. The most frequently used acupoints were SP6, CV4. Conclusions: Included studies showed that acupuncture might have effect on POF. Further research should be conducted to verify its therapeutic mechanisms and effectiveness.
Objectives The aim of this study is to analyze the therapeutic effect of external Qigong therapy for treatment of other people's disease on joint pain. Methods We searched articles from Pubmed, Chinese Academic Journals (CAJ) and Oasis online databases. Searching keywords were 'external qigong', 'external qi gong', 'qi therapy', '外气', '关节' and '기공'. After searching the articles, we performed quality assessment using Cochrane risk of bias (RoB) tool and risk of bias assessment tool for non-randomized study (RoBANS). Results Among the 117 articles were searched, 2 randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) and 2 single-group before and after studies were finally selected. All of 4 studies showed that external Qigong therapy has significant effect on joint pain. Conclusions Although external Qigong therapy has therapeutic effect on joint pain, it is not common therapy yet. However, external Qigong therapy requires more interests and studies in the future, because it is faithful therapy for Korean medicine theory.
