  • This study was performed to investigate the nutritional status associated with alcohol consumption in Korean adults men and women. The data was derived from the 2001 Korean National Health and Nutrition Survey. The number of subjects included were 6090 (Men: 2789, Women: 3031) aged 20 (equation omitted) < 65y. Men consuming moderate alcohol ((equation omitted) 24 g/day but < 48g/day) had higher intakes of energy and vitamin B groups than the ones consuming less than 24g/day. Heavy drinking men reporting more than 48g alcohol/day were observed as having 3207.2kcal of energy intake (130% of Korean RDA) and significantly elevated levels in most of the nutrients. For women drinkers, when the alcohol consumption was moderate ((equation omitted) 12g/day but 24g/day) or heavy((equation omitted) 36g/day) the energy intake was 2188.9kcal(100% of RDA) or 2627.5kcal (130% of RDA). The other nutrients protein, fat, calcium, iron and vitamin B group were also higher in women with heavy alcohol consumption. Heavy drinking women showed significantly higher weight, BMI and HDL-C. In contrast, heavy drinking men did not show any significant difference in BMI but showed significantly elevated blood pressure, HDL-C and lower serum cholesterol.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the relationship among dietary behavior, meal balance, and clinical symptoms related nutritional status and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) in preschool children. The survey was conducted using questionnaires and the subjects were 3~6 years old preschool children in Samcheok. Subjects were divided into an ADHD dispositions group(n=88) and a normal group(n=129) based on assessments conducted by the children's mother using the Abbreviated Conners's Parent Rating Scale. There was no significant difference in meal frequency, meal speed, meal regularity or meal balance between children with ADHD dispositions and the normal groups. The ADHD disposition group had a higher proportion of children with picky eating(p<0.05), too much snacking(p<0.05) and over eating (p=0.05) habits than the normal group. In addition, the ADHD dispositions group had a higher frequency of clinical symptoms such as 'breathlessness when going up stairs', 'sleeplessness', 'anxiety' and 'tiredness'. Overall, there was a significant relationship between ADHD disposition and dietary problems and clinical symptoms related to poor nutritional status in preschool children. Therefore, to prevent and treat ADHD in preschool children, proper dietary management such as correcting of picky eating, over snacking and overeating is needed.

  • A nationwide nutrition survey began when the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) requested assistance from international relief organizations in 1997 due to flooding in 1995-1996, followed by the worsening food shortage peak in 1997. According to reported data for the 15 years since the active intervention and assistance from international societies, the malnutrition and mortality rates of children in the DPRK have improved. However, the prevalence of the stunting reported in the latest 2012 report is 27.9%, which is still a moderate-severe level, and worrisome in terms of international standards. In particular, the prevalence in Ryangangdo, which is regarded as the worst region in the DPRK, is 39.6%, which is a very high level of stunting. To alleviate such regional deviation will be a major task for future assistance. In addition, one cannot emphasize too highly the importance of early nutritional assistance for pregnant women and infants, considering that the recovery from stunted growth is low after two years of age, and the aftereffects would continue for the rest of their lives.

  • This study was conducted to examine the needs of nutrition education based on analysis of the eating habits and nutrition knowledge among middle school students. The survey was conducted on 536 students (boys=216, girls=320) using a questionnaire. The average number of meals consumed was three (67.5%) and 58.0% of students reported having breakfast. Concerning the nutritional knowledge, students showed the highest score (girls, 0.90${\pm}$0.03 and boys 0.82${\pm}$0.04) for items describing the proper diet plan for obesity. Additionally, nutritional knowledge was found to have a significant effect on dietary habits. Regarding the necessity for nutrition education, high response rates for "For normal growth of students (44.8%)" and "Help to select proper food and choose safe food (24.0%)" were observed. Taken together, these findings indicate that consistent and systematic management is required under the institutional support by the school to improve students' perception regarding nutrition and to develop effective nutrition education.

  • The present study was conducted to document North Korea's long standing food shortage situation and to evaluate the devastating effects of its recent food crisis on the already poor health and nutritional state of the people in North Korea. We analyzed the mail survey data on food consumption patterns and anthropometry of 109 North Korean defectors, male, aged 20 years and older, who resettled in the South during the period of 1988-1999. The result of our survey data indicated that during 1988-1993 when North Korea's food supply was not yet emerged as a serious problem, food and nutrient intake of North Korean defectors was estimated to be significantly lower that the recommended intake levels for maintenance. Energy and protein intake of subjects who defected further with the recent food crisis. For subjects who defected after 1994, the total and animal food intakes were reduced to 67% and 25%, respectively, of the amounts consumed by those who defected in the period of 1988-1993, and their energy and protein intake was decreased by 27% and 30% to the level of 1,181kcal and 40g. Regardless of the time of defection, the mean height and body weight of defectors was significantly lower than that of South Korean reference men. The prevalence of infectious diseases and malnutrition signs was higher among defectors who resettled in the South after 1994 compared to those who resettled during 1988-1993.

  • Objectives: This study investigated health behavior and nutritional status according to the presence or absence of periodontal disease using data from the Sixth National Health Nutrition Survey. Methods: Data from the 2013-2015 National Health Nutrition Survey were analyzed by frequency analysis, chi-square test, and Pearson's correlation analysis using SPSS 21.0. Results: Periodontal disease was more frequent in the group of patients who perceived that their subjective health status was "very bad" or were underweight according to the BMI classification. In men, periodontal disease occurred more frequently in those who were taking calcium (p<0.05), and periodontal disease occurred more frequently in the age group of 20-39, regardless of sex (p<0.05). In women, periodontal disease was less frequent in the group taking vitamin A. In both men and women, the presence of periodontal disease correlated with high fasting blood sugar and glycated hemoglobin levels. Conclusions: A customized program should be developed for each patient to identify factors that affect the relationship among periodontal disease, nutrient intake, and blood parameters. Such information will help improve the oral health of the population.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the association nutrition education experience in regards to metabolic risk and nutrition intake in Korean adult male using the 2016~2017 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey as the reference. The study involved a total of 1,978 male subjects aged 40~64 who were classified into the 2 groups based on their nutrition education experience: Educated group (n=88) and non-educated group (n=1,890). The household income and education level of educated group were higher than those of the non-educated group. The two groups showed no significant difference in the level of fasting blood sugar, blood lipid profile including total cholesterol and triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, and hypertension. Vitamin C intake of the educated group (127.5 mg) was higher compared to the non-educated group (88.2 mg) (p<0.05). The percentage of the subjects utilizing nutritional labels was higher in the educated group. The nutrition education experience was inversely proportional to lower Odds Ratio in hyperLDL-cholesterolemia (OR: 0.47, 95% CI: 0.36, 0.84) and HypoHDL-cholesterolemia (OR: 0.57, 95% CI: 0.37, 0.87). This result indicates that nutritional education can be used as an effective tool to avert chronic diseases and develop healthy eating habits.
