Distribution of Damaged Oaks and Annual Oak Biomass Removal by Oak Nut Weevil(Mechoris ursulus) in Korea

  • Herbivory is an important selective forces on plants by reducing the ability of the plant to compete with its neighbors and to produce offspring. Oak nut weevil(Mechoris ursulus Roelofs) females lay eggs in unmatured acorns and cut off the branch of oviposited acorns. To investigate the influences of branch-cutting behavior of oak nut weevils on oak production, we surveyed the horizontal and vertical distribution ranges of damaged oaks and depth of sites of overwintering larvae and quantified the amounts of biomass and acorn removed by the weevils on deciduous oak species. All of the endemic oak species in Korea were damaged by oak nut weevils in all of the study sites including Mt. Halla and Mt. Seorak. The upper limit of vertical distribution of damaged oaks by the weevils raried from 700 m to 900 m. Mostly their larvae were found in soil from 8.1 cm to 10.0 cm depth in winter. Percentage of annual net primary productivity($720g{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}day^{-1}$) of oak species removed by the weevils was about 7%, which is higher than the percentage removed by all the herbivores in typical temperate forest(5%) and equivalent to that by all the herbivores in tropical forest. The predation percentage of annual acorn production by oak nut weevil was 27% in Q. mongolica and 33% in Q. acutissima. This results indicate that the branch-cutting behavior of oak nut weevil may be the most important factor regulating oak population and affecting other predators dependent on acorns.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of Chewing Gutka, Areca Nut, Snuff and Tobacco Smoking Among the Young Population in the Northern India Population

  • Objective: The objective of the study was to determine the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice of chewing gutka,areca nut, snuff and tobacco smoking among the young population in the Northern India Population between the age of 15 to 22 years. Methods: The study was approved by the ethical committee. A total of 10 school and colleges located in the rural and urban areas was selected. A total of 1500 young individuals aged between 15 to 22 years were selected. A self-administered questionnaire was designed comprised of 14 closed ended questions about Knowledge, Attitude and Practice towards consumption of areca nut, gutka and tobacco smoking that were filled by the participants. Descriptive statistics were obtained and mean, standard deviation, frequency and percentages were calculated. Data was analyzed by using SPSS. Result: A total of 1050 out of 1500 students responded to the questionnaire. A total of 227 subjects agreed that they are consuming the tobacco. Out of this, 196 (86.34%) were boys and 31 (13.65%) were girls who agreed in consumption of tobacco product. Out of 196, 150 boys (76.5%) practices the habit of smoking 1 -5 times a day and 46 (23.4% ) practice the habit of chewing areca nut and gutkha 1 - 5 times a day. Out of 31 girls, 25 girls (80.6%) practices the habit of smoking 1 -5 times a day and 6 (19.4%) practice the habit of chewing areca nut and gutkha 1 - 5 times a day. Out of 740 subjects, 530 were boys and 210 girls have full knowledge of deleterious long term effects of tobacco consumption. Conclusion:The present study concluded that young population of North India lack Knowledge, Attitude and Practice regarding consumption of areca nut, gutka and tobacco smoking. Here is an urgent need to take effective steps, especially on launching community awareness programs for the school children and public to educate them about the consequences of tobacco use, and on assessing their effectiveness in curbing the problem.

오배자와 포도 껍질 추출물의 항균 활성에 관한 연구 (Antimicrobial Activity of Extract from Gall-nut and Red-grape Husk)

  • 오배자 등 민간생약제와 포도과피 추출물의 항균활성과 GTase 활성저해능에 대하여 조사하였다. 항균활성과 GTase 저해 활성능은 오배자와 적포도 과피의 물추출물이 가장 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 오배자와 적포도 과피 추출물의 methanol 분획물은 B. subtilis와 E. coli 균주에 대해서 강한 항균활성을 나타내었다. 오배자 추출물의 methanol 분획물은 B. subtilis와 E. coli에 대한 최소 저해 농도가 각각 1.0mg/ml과 3.0mg/ml이었고, 포도과피 추출물 추출물의 methanol 분획물의 GTase활성의 80% 저해율에 대한 농도는 각각 1.08$\times$10-3mg/ml과 1.08$\times$10-2mg/ml이었다. 두 추출물의 항균활성과 GTase활성 저해의 주요 화합물은 polyphenol 화합물 계통으로 추정된다.

  • 개암종실(種實)중의 단백질(蛋白質)을 이용하기 위한 기초자료을 억디 위하여 탈지박(脫脂粕)으로부터 단백질(蛋白質)을 추출(抽出)하여 침전(沈澱)으로 분리(分離)하고 분리단백질(分離蛋白質)의 아미노산 조성(組成)과 전기영동(電氣泳動) pattern을 검토한 결과는 다음과 같다. l. 탈지박(脫脂粕)의 단백질함량(蛋白質含量)은 54.6%로서 높은 영양가가 인정되었다. 2. 탈지박(脫脂粕)의 염용해성단백질의 추출율(抽出率)은 2.5M $MgCl_2$에 있어서 53.0%, 1.0M NaCl에 있어서 31.5%이었다. 3. 개암단백질(蛋白質)은 용해도(溶解度)에 따라 염용해성 globulin 53.0%, 수용성(水溶性)albumin 14.0%, glutelin 29.5%로 분류(分類)되어졌다. 4. 추출(抽出)된 단백질(蛋白質)의 침전율(沈澱率)은 pH5.5에서 85%이었으며 ethanol과 acetone의 농도를 60~70%로 하였을 때 90%의 단백질이 분리(分離)되어졌다. 5. 전기영동(電氣泳動)에 의하여 물과 0.01M NaCl로 추출된 단백질(蛋白質)은 3개의 band, 0.027N NaOH와 1M NaCl에 있어서는 6개의 band가 나타났다. 6. 개암종실탈지박(種實脫脂粕)과 분리단백질(分離蛋白質)이 주된 아미노산은 glutamicacid, arginine, aspartic acid이었다.

자주포 궤도 너트에 미치는 우발적 수소취성 현상의 영향 (Analysis of the Accidental Hydrogen Embrittlement Affecting the Track Nut of Self-Propelled Howitzer)

  • In this study, we analyzed the accidental hydrogen embrittlement affecting the track nut on a self-propelled howitzer. Tracks are key components to maintain a high degree of confidence in the operation of the self-propelled howitzer and the safety of the crew. This study analyzed the fractured surface using SEM to review accidental damage of the wedge nut. In addition, we conducted revival tests and analyzed the results to identify the cause of the wedge nut damage from hydrogen embrittlement. We should carry out factor analysis and continuous improvement of the manufacturing process to determine the accidental breakage mechanism for future enhancement of the self-propelled howitzer. This study will be the useful reference for enhancing process designs in similar products.

잣에 존재하는 아밀라제의 특성 (Properties of Crude Amylase Isolated from Pine Nut)

  • 잣죽의 점도를 낮추는 주요원인이 amylase작용에 의한 것임을 증명하기 위하여 잣으로부터 조효소를 분리하고 작용특성을 조사하였다. 잣의 초산완충액 추출물에 ammonium sulfate를 가하여 $35{\sim}55%$ 포화되도록 하였을 때 침전하는 획분이 가장높은 ${\alpha}-amylase$의 specific activity를 나타내었다. 이 효소의 적정 작용조건은 $75^{\circ}C$, pH5.4이었으며 쌀가루에 첨가하여 amylograph 양상을 관찰한 결과 쌀가루의 점도를 크게 낮추는 것으로 나타났다.

Cashew Nut Oil: Extraction, Chromatographic and Rheological Characterisation.

  • Oil was extracted from cashew nuts. The physicochemical parameters of the oil were determined. A chromatographic assay of the oil was carried out using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. Seventeen compounds were detected: Phenol, Phenol 2-methyl-, Cyclohexene 4, 4-dimethyl-, m-Fluoro-2-diazoacetophenone 4-dimethyl-, Tetradecanoic acid, Phenol 4-octyl-, n-Hexadecanoic acid. Others are 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) - methyl ester, Hexadecanoic acid methyl ester, Methyl stearate, Dodecanoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12, 15-Octadecatrienoic acid (Z, Z, Z)-, Oleic acid, Octadecanoic acid, Tetracosanoic acid and 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester. Among the components are omega three and omega six essential free fatty acids. The rheological profiling and flow properties of cashew nut oil were determined using a Programmable Rheometer. Cashew nut oil exhibits slight dilatant behaviour at the low end of shear rate. The long chain and high molecular weight of its constituents controlled its rheology. Long-chained 9-Octadecenoic acid methyl ester, 9, 12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) - methyl ester, Tetracosanoic acid and methyl stearate, coupled with their high molecular weights are responsible for the shear thickening effect observed. Two models, Carreau-Yasuda and Ostwald-de Waele Power Law were employed to fit the rheological data. The Carreau-Yasuda model followed well the data.

한국산 개암종실의 중성지질 조성에 관한 연구 (Studies on the Neutral Lipid Components of Korean Hazel Nut)

  • Compositions of neutral lipid of the hazel nut (Corylus heterophylla Fischer var. thumbergii Blume, Betulaceae) produced in Korea were analyzed by thinchrography (Iatrosoan TH-10 type), which was equipped with a flame ionization detector. The neutral lipid components were nearly separated of the basis of their degree of unsaturation by employing the chromatography on silica gel sintered rod impregnated with 12.5% silver nitrate and it was noted that triglyceride was the major lipid components of Korean hazel nut. The triglyceride compositions were trilinolenin 10.63, trilinolein 18.01, triolein 42.24, tripalmitin 17.57 and tristearin 11.55% by thinchrographic analysis.

Vision-based technique for bolt-loosening detection in wind turbine tower

  • In this study, a novel vision-based bolt-loosening monitoring technique is proposed for bolted joints connecting tubular steel segments of the wind turbine tower (WTT) structure. Firstly, a bolt-loosening detection algorithm based on image processing techniques is developed. The algorithm consists of five steps: image acquisition, segmentation of each nut, line detection of each nut, nut angle estimation, and bolt-loosening detection. Secondly, experimental tests are conducted on a lab-scale bolted joint model under various bolt-loosening scenarios. The bolted joint model, which is consisted of a ring flange and 32 sets of bolt and nut, is used for simulating the real bolted joint connecting steel tower segments in the WTT. Finally, the feasibility of the proposed vision-based technique is evaluated by bolt-loosening monitoring in the lab-scale bolted joint model.

잣죽의 제조조건이 관능적 품질의 기호도에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Processing Condition on Preference in Sensory Quality of Pine Nut Gruel)

  • 잣죽의 제조조건이 죽의 기호도에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 잣죽의 제조조건인 주입액의 양(쌀 무게에 대한 물의 체적 비), 잣 첨가량(쌀 무게에 대한 잣의 무게 비) 및 호화를 위한 가열조리시간을 요인변수로 중심합성계획법에 의하여 실험을 설계하고 기호도를 반응변수로 하여 그 조사 결과에 대하여 반응표면분석을 진행하였다. 주입액의 양, 잣 첨가량 및 가열시간 모두가 색상에 대한 기호도에 크게 영향을 미치지 않았고 주입액의 양과 잣 첨가량은 10% 유의수준에서 향에 영향을 주었다. 점성과 전반적 기호도에 대하여 주입액의 양은 1% 유의수준에서, 가열조리시간은 5%의 유의수준에서 영향을 미쳤다. 잣죽에 대한 기호도 검사에서 전반적 기호도는 많이는 점성에 좌우되었고 색상의 영향을 가장 적게 받았다.
