  • Purpose: Although feminism has been actively discussed and applied to nursing in Western societies since the 1980s, it is little known among Korean scholars as well as Korean nurses. This article explores the use of feminist perspectives in nursing science in other developed countries and suggests how feminism could be applied to nursing science in Korea. Method: The literature related to nursing and feminism were reviewed in terms of nursing practice, education, and research. Result: This article describes what feminism is and how feminism and nursing have evolved historically over time in other countries, especially in Western societies. In addition, it discusses how it can be applied to nursing practice, education, and research in Korea. Conclusion: Accepting feminist perspective in Korean nursing could benefit in empowering nurses by valuing nursing, by raising self-esteem of nurses, and by raising the consciousness of socio-political realities. Eventually it could benefit in changing and developing nursing science in Korea.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to determine the core nursing interventions in nursing notes and the practice which was perceived by nurses of an oncology unit with patients with terminal cancer. Also, comparing interventions in nursing notes with interventions in perceived practice was done. Method: Subjects were 44 nursing records of patients with terminal cancer who had died from Jan. to Dec. 2002 at C University Hospital and 83 nurses who were working on an oncology unit for more than one year. Data was collected using a Nursing Interventions Classification and analyzed by means of mean and t-test. Results: The most frequent nursing intervention was 'nausea management' in the nursing note and was 'medication administration: oral' in perceived practice. The frequency of nursing interventions in the nursing record was lower than in perceived practice. Conclusion: This study finds that nurses actually practice nursing care, but they may omit records. To correct for omitted nursing records, development of a systematic nursing record system, continuous education and feedback is recommended.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a set of standardized nursing interventions and their associated nursing activities according to the NIC system to guide home care nurses in performing nursing intervention activities for hospice patients. Method: This study was a descriptive survey that first identified frequently used & specialized hospice nursing interventions based on the NIC systems and next validated a set of standardized nursing interventions and their associated nursing activities. One hundred chart records of home hospice patients were used to identify nursing interventions. Also, thirty-nine hospice specialized nurses participated twice using the Delphi technique to test the content validity of the standards. Results: Among the nursing interventions, 19 important nursing interventions and 418 associated nursing activities were selected after two rounds of Delphi technique by hospice specialized nurses. The mean content validity of the final nursing activities was 0.82. In this paper, only the 3 most frequently used nursing interventions and 3 hospice specialized nursing interventions with their associated nursing activities are presented since space is limited. Conclusion: The nursing intervention standards will be a basis for home hospice nurses to improve quality of hospice care for hospice patients.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the population requiring nursing home services for frail elders who received home care nursing services. This study identified the need of nursing home services and the proportion of elders over 60 years of age requiring nursing home services according to the admission eligibility including items with intensity of home care nursing services and the criteria for screening of patients requiring home care nursing services. In this study, survey research design was conducted. A total of 49 home care nurses were collected. They were asked to assess the need of nursing home services based on items with intensity of home care nursing services and the criteria for screening of patients requiring home care nursing services. Using secondary data analysis from the survey on 'The Evaluation of Home Care Nursing Service Program in 1994 in Korea', the proportion of elders requiring nursing home services was estimated. The estimated numbers and proportion of frail elders requiring nursing home services were 169 (86.2%) aged persons among community dwelling elders based on admission eligibility. However, the proportion of aged persons was 68% using the only criteria for screening of patients requiring for screening home care nursing services.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system, required for accreditation of nursing education. Methods: A methodological design was used. To ensure the theoretical validity of the evaluation system, learning objectives for nursing education programs and job descriptions for nurses in Korea were verified by analyzing the relationships in the five attributes of the nursing leadership concept. The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was developed based on the Kim & Park's developmental model (2008). Results: The nursing leadership program outcome evaluation system was established, including implementation level, education curriculum, level of performance, evaluation method, rubrics, and Close-the-Loop. Conclusion: The developed evaluation system can be actively used in nursing education, and contribute to enhancing the leadership competencies of nursing students and graduate nurses.

Methods: For this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with a total of 12 nursing students, and data were collected through individual in depth interviews from September to December 2018. The data were analyzed using the phenomenological analysis method suggested by Colaizzi. Results: The experience of visiting nursing practice consisted of four themes. Four themes are 'Understanding visiting nursing work: Tight time and problems to overcome', 'Understanding visiting nursing object: People waiting for a visiting nurse', 'Visiting nursing practice experience: Sometimes to get reprimanded but rewarding practice', and 'Expectations for visiting nursing business: Hopes for development'. Conclusion: Findings from this study presented vivid experiences of nursing students who on community home visit nursing. Community visiting nursing practice became an opportunity for students to understand visiting nursing and target people and to think about the necessity of visiting nursing and future development direction. It is necessary to develop an institutional and policy basis with regard to the increasing number and role expansion of community visit nurses.

  • Purpose: This study presents the current status of transcultural nursing education in nursing baccalaureate programs. Methods: The nursing curricula from 185 out of 194 nursing colleges that received accreditation were collected and analyzed. Results: 109 (58.9%) nursing colleges offered 117 transcultural nursing-related courses. The courses were offered as elective (68.4%) as well as major (78.6%) courses. All courses were offered as a theoretical delivery class without any field experiences. The courses were offered mainly for sophomore (41.9%) and freshman students (33.3%), and most of them (79.5%) were two-credit courses. Instead of the term "transcultural nursing," "multicultural nursing" is mostly used in the title of courses. An inconsistency between the title of courses and their content was found. After analyzing the title of courses based on four nursing meta-paradigms, courses related to the environment were most common (41.9%). Conclusion: Transcultural nursing education has developed during the last decade. However, teaching methods and course content have not developed enough. Thus, a greater effort is needed to increase awareness of the importance of transcultural nursing education and to develop courses for it.

  • Purpose: This study was a comparative review of the computerized nursing records and paper-based nursing records to examine effects of a nursing process documentation system focusing on patients who have had stroke. Method: First, the researchers collected all the foci from the computerized records and the paper-based records. They selected ten nursing foci, used frequently in both groups and analyzed the number of foci per patient, appropriateness of foci, the number of nursing activities per nursing focus and whether outcomes were described or not in the nursing record. Results: There was fewer errors in nursing diagnosis selection, and a larger number of activities in the records than trle paper based ones. Also, there was a better description of the nursing outcomes in the computerized records. Conclusion: This study suggests that the computerized nursing records is significantly effective in increasing accuracy of the nursing care plan and quality of the nursing record.
