Factors Influencing Competence in the Intensive and Critical Care Nursing of Senior Nursing Students (간호대학 4학년 학생의 중환자간호역량에 미치는 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the factors influencing the competence in intensive and critical care nursing of senior nursing students. Methods: A descriptive survey was used to examine the factors that influence competence in intensive and critical care nursing. The data were collected using self-administered questionnaires; 237 senior nursing students were asked about general characteristics, critical thinking, communication competence, self-esteem, self-resilience, and self-leadership. Results: Multiple regression analysis indicated that self-leadership, self-esteem, and confidence in intensive care unit practice predicted the competence in intensive and critical care nursing (37.8% of explanatory power). Critical thinking, communication competence, and self-resilience were not shown to be significant predictors of, but were positively correlated with, the competence in intensive and critical care nursing. Conclusion: Based on the results, it is suggested that self-leadership, self-esteem, and confidence in intensive care unit practice should be considered in nursing education in order to improve nursing students' level of competence in intensive and critical care nursing.

Nursing Students' Image of Nurse and Satisfaction with Clinical Practice (간호학생의 간호이미지와 임상실습만족도)

  • Purpose: This study was designed to identify the relationship between image of nursing and satisfaction with clinical practice of nursing students Method: A descriptive research design that examined relationship between image of nurse and satisfaction with clinical practice of nursing students was used for this study, All 350 subjects were obtained by convenience sampling from three nursing diploma programs. The data were collected using an self-reporting questionnaire from May 1st to 31st, 2003. Collected data were analysed on SPSS Win 11.0. Result: There is a significant relationship between image of nurse and satisfaction with clinical practice of nursing student. Classical image of nurse, older age, and satisfaction with nursing of nursing students were identified as the factors that influence significantly on their satisfaction with clinical practice. Conclusions: Nursing student is given a chance to prepare themselves be a nurse through well-structured clinical nursing practice. Therefore, it's important to enhance nursing students' image of nurse and satisfaction with nursing in order to enhance their satisfaction with clinical practice.

Development of Nursing Competence Scale for Graduating Nursing Students (졸업을 앞둔 간호학생의 핵심간호역량 측정도구 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to develop a nursing competence scale for soon to be graduate nursing students and to verify its validity and reliability. Methods: This study is a methodological study for development of a scale. Based on literature review and group discussion of 13 professional experts, 40 preliminary items were developed and the content validity was verified. Psychometric testing was performed and data were collected from 141 soon to be graduate nursing students of a university. Construct validity was verified by factor analysis and reliability was calculated. Results: The analyses resulted in a scale named the Nursing Competence Scale for Graduating Nursing Students (NCS-GNS), consisting of 30 items covering eight categories: nursing professionalism, integrated nursing through critical thinking, communication skills, nursing leadership, respect for life, stress management, nursing research, and core nursing skills. For the entire scale, the explained variance was 66.72% and Cronbach's alpha was 0.906. Conclusion: NCS-GNS was developed and its validity and reliability were verified. This scale can be used to evaluate nursing competence for graduating nursing students.

Nursing cost in Operating Room applying the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale(RBRVS) (수술간호행위별 상대가치(Resource-Based Relative Value)의 측정 및 간호수가 산정)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to define cost-countable perioperative nursing activities and to analyze the cost of each nursing activities based on the Resource-Based Relative Value Scale (RBRVS). Method: Researcher and 3 research assistants observed and documented the 83 operating patients in order to measure nursing time for each of the perioperative nursing activities. And then, 35 operating room nurses with at least one year of perioperative nursing experience were observed for the RBRVS of perioperative nursing activities. Finally, the direct and indirect nursing costs were estimated. Result: Nursing costs of 25 nursing activities were estimated using the RBRVS. Most expensive nursing activities were delivery of the instrument and implement for OP team (9,780 won per hour) and behavior of wash, pack, disinfect the instrument (6,770). Conclusion: Based on the relative values of each perioperative nursing activities estimated in this study, proper medical reimbursement system should be established in a near future.

Development of Agenda Priority for Nursing Service Research and Development (간호서비스 연구개발 분야에서의 우선순위과제 도출)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to suggest agenda priorities for nursing service R&D (Research and Development) related policies development. Methods: Two steps in developing the agendas and priorities were performed in this descriptive study. First, nursing service R&D agendas were extracted through needs assessment of nursing researchers and practitioners. Then, the priority of agendas was set by Analytic Hierarchy Process by ten experts who were representatives of nursing and other healthcare professionals. Results: Six core areas and forty-six nursing service R&D agendas were developed. The priority of agendas was different according to the evaluation criteria depending on weight value of nursing services. Conclusion: In order to select and promote nursing service R&D projects within national healthcare policy, nursing service R&D policy should be proposed with consideration to the importance of the criteria in reflecting characteristics of nursing care. By strengthening R&D capabilities for quality improvement and sensitive awareness of national directions for healthcare R&D policies, nursing service R&D can be appropriately promoted.

Development of Objectives in Nursing Clinical Education based on the Nursing Core Competencies (핵심간호능력 중심 간호학실습교육목표 개발)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to set up a Nursing Core Competencies required for staff nurses and to set up Objectives for Nursing Clinical Education based on the Nursing Core Competencies. The objectives in this study are to be achieved ultimately through clinical practice because it is a common avenue of work and the basic objective regardless of the education system and curriculum. Method: A nursing Core Competencies were established by literature review and verified by 15 experts. Nursing Clinical Education Objectives were established by literature review and analysis, and a survey for validity using a five point Likert scale was given to 257 nursing professors, 503 head-nurses, 509 staff nurses who had less than 3 years clinical experience in 34 general hospitals and 738 senior student nurses from 81 nursing colleges. Result: Nine nursing core competencies were set up. In addition 39 Objectives for each of the nursing clinical core competencies were set up. Conclusion: In conclusion, this study will contribute to professional nursing education to provide comprehensive nursing care by applying knowledge to nursing practice to achieve the Nursing Pore Competency as a professional nurse.

Development of the Nursing Record Forms for Effective Home Care Nursing -Focused on Postpartum Women following a Cesarean Section and Newborns- (가정간호업무 효율성을 위한 간호활동 기록도구 개발 -제왕절개 산욕부와 신생아를 중심으로-)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develope nursing activities record to improve home care nursing for postpartum women following a Cesarean section and newborns. Method: This study for instrument development had three phases: first, selection of nursing activities according to intervention, second, validation of the preliminary home care nursing activities, and third. application of the home care nursing activities. The subjects for validaton were 137 home care nurses and clinical nurses in department of maternity. Result: By Fehring's method, 116 nursing activities according to 19 interventions were included in the preliminary nursing activities record. Among them, 51 critical nursing activities and 65 supporting nursing activities were chosen. During the final process of validation, 121 nursing activities were included. Conclusion: In order to have systemic standardization of this record forms, replication and application in the various home nursing area is need in the future.

Development of Standard of Educational Equipment for Fundamental Nursing Practice in BSN Programs (4년제 간호교육기관의 기본간호학 실습 기자재 표준안 개발)

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop standards for educational equipment in fundamental nursing practice courses in BSN programs. Method: The participants in this study were 30 professors who taught fundamental nursing in colleges or departments of nursing. The data were gathered between December 2002 and May 2003 using a questionnaire on the present state of fundamental nursing practice and the educational equipment list for fundamental nursing practice. Result: There was variety in the content of the courses of fundamental nursing practice in BSN programs, and the environment for fundamental nursing practice was in diverse setting. A standard for educational equipment was developed consisting of 93 pieces of equipment for fundamental nursing practice. Conclusion: The standard for educational equipment for fundamental nursing practice in BSN programs provides the basics for fundamental nursing practice. Of these 72 were selected and the authors suggests establishing an educational committee of fundamental nursing practice and holding a workshop on educational equipment for fundamental nursing practice in BSN programs every 5 years.

A Concept Analysis of Cultural Nursing Competence (문화간호역량 개념 분석)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to conduct a concept analysis of cultural nursing competence. Methods: Cultural nursing competence was analyzed using Rodgers' evolutionary concept development method. A literature search using the keywords "cultural nursing competence", "intercultural nursing competence", "cultural nursing", "cultural health nursing", and "cultural competence" was conducted in PubMed, CINAHL, ERIC, and RISS on material published before 2015. Database and bibliographic searches yielded 35 records. Results: Cultural nursing competence comprised cognitive, affective, and behavioral domains. The critical attributes of the concept were sensitivity, equality, and activity. The analysis identified the following dimensions: awareness, openness, and coherence. The consequences of cultural nursing competence were personal satisfaction and social justice. The definition contained competence on both an individual and social level. Conclusion: Cultural competency enhances quality of care by narrowing health disparities and increasing client satisfaction. The concept analysis of cultural nursing competence may offer an acceptable framework which can be used to develop psychometric tools of this concept and provide guidelines in nursing practice.

The Perceptions of Nurses and Nursing Students on Nursing Law Legislation in Korea (간호(사)법 제정정에 대한 인식 조사 연구)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the perceptions of nurses and nursing students on nursing law legislation in Korea. Method: This was a descriptive study. The data were collected by questionnaires from 1914 nurses and 408 nursing students and analyzed using descriptive statistics and t-test. Results: Most of respondents (73.5%) had received the information on nursing law legislation mainly through the nursing news letter, nursing magazine(Taehan Kanhoo), and Korean Nurses Association internet homepage. However, they expressed they did not know sufficiently about the nursing law legislation and wanted know more about it. They strongly supported the nursing law legislation. There were significant differences in perceptions between the people who had a chance to know about the nursing law legislation and who did not. Conclusion: Education should be offered not only to the people who wanted to know more about on nursing law legislation and but also to the people who are not concerned or never had a chance to know about this. It is important to empower nurses and nursing students to be proactive on the issues of nursing law legislation.
