A Study for Development of Competency-Based Continuing Education System Depending on Nurses Clinical Ladder (간호사 임상경력단계에 따른 역량기반 보수교육시스템 개발을 위한 연구)

  • The aim of this study was to develop a list of nursing competency for nurses' continuing education, and to propose a competency-based continuing education system according to nurses' clinical ladder. The definition of nursing competency was extracted by analyzing 10 studies. Also, the knowledge base of each nursing competency was confirmed through Carper and Chinn & Kramer's research. Nurses' clinical ladder and preliminary items of nursing competency behavior indicators were verified by seven experts for content validity. The results of this study were as follows; Nursing competencies were defined as 'evidence-based patient care', 'education and counseling', 'nursing management and leadership', 'law and ethics', 'professional value and development', 'research and policy development'. In addition, the validity of the 4 stages of clinical ladder and the 24 indicators of nursing competency were confirmed by experts. These findings suggest that the competency-based continuing education system according to the clinical ladder will be utilized as an effective human resource development strategy for improving the professionalism of nurses.

Effects of Simulation Education with Problem-based Learning on Information Literacy, Self-directed Learning Ability, and Academic Self-efficacy of Nursing Students (문제중심학습기반 시뮬레이션 실습교육이 간호대학생의 정보활용능력, 자기주도적 학습능력, 학업적 효능감에 미치는 효과)

  • The objective of this study was to determine the effects of simulation education with problem-based learning (SIM-PBL) on information literacy, self-directed learning ability, and academic self-efficacy of nursing students. The subjects were 81 fourth-year nursing students attending a university in Chungcheongnam-do, Korea. SIM-PBL was provided once per week (150 minutes each) for four weeks, and a structured questionnaire was used to survey information literacy, self-directed learning ability, and academic self-efficacy before and after educational training. After completing the four-week program, abilities in the sub-items of information literacy, such as information integration (${\acute{p}}=.030$), information expression (${\acute{p}}=.003$), and information ethics (${\acute{p}}=.016$) were improved. However, no differences in self-directed learning ability and academic self-efficacy were noted. Findings confirmed that SIM-PBL is an effective teaching method for improving the information literacy of nursing students. Therefore, it is necessary to come up with an SIM-PBL education plan for utilizing reliable and useful information ethically.

A Study for a Curriculum for the Oriental Clinical Nurse Specialist Program (한방전문간호사 교육과정 개발 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a curriculum for the oriental clinical nurse specialist program based on the understanding of Korean human beings so as to develop nursing as a profession and promote the client's health. The design of this study was based on literature review and nominal group study. The research was managed by East-West Nursing Research Institute of nursing science college at Kyung Hee University. The research team was composed of 17 professors of nursing departments of oriental medical colleges. We obtained opinions from Oriental Nurses Association, Oriental Nursing Research Association, and professors in oriental medical college. We reviewed articles, curriculums of other clinical nurse specialist programs, medical laws and the curriculum development plan for the oriental clinical nurse specialist program from Korean Nurses Association. We discussed a curriculum thoroughly in numerous meetings. We developed a following curriculum: 1. Educational philosophy was founded on the oriental human view which was based on Chun-In union theory. It was founded on the oriental health view which recognized health being in harmony with nature and the balance of body function with the harmony of Yin-Yang in the five elements. In addition, it was founded on oriental nursing view to promote these health states. 2. Educational goals were to train oriental clinical nurse specialists, oriental nursing educators and oriental nursing researchers who developed knowledge of oriental nursing theory, nursing practice and created a leadership. 3. Curriculum consisted of 48 credits, of which 36 credits are based on lectures and laboratory classes and 12 credits are based on clinical practice. 36 credits consisted of 5 general subject credits and 31 core subject credits. General subjects consisted of nursing theory, nursing research, law and ethics. Students who had earned master's degrees are not required to take the general subjects. Core subjects consisted of 11 subjects such as advanced physical examination and laboratory, oriental nursing theory, original text of oriental nursing, oriental medical nursing, oriental pediatric nursing, oriental gynecologic nursing, oriental gerontologic nursing, oriental pharmacology, oriental constitutional nursing, advanced nursing of channels and acupuncture points and laboratory and oriental rehabilitation nursing and laboratory. In addition, clinical practice in a hospital ward, out patient department, herb prepation room, department of physical therapy and health promotion center in oriental medical hospitals for 12 weeks. To admit this program, students should complete prerequisites of introduction to oriental nursing and nursing of channels and acupuncture points. 4. Course contents of each subjects were developed to include the course's goal and objectives and specific items. 5. Evaluation involved lecture, laboratory and in field practice. We applied various evaluation systems and methods that were based on both knowledge and skills of the students to ensure full credibility and validity.

Stakeholders' Opinion on the Desired Characteristics of Nursing School Graduates and Factors Concerning Nursing Curriculum Development in Thailand

  • Effective higher educational management in undergraduate nursing programs is an important issue from the viewpoint of stakeholders. This qualitative research aimed to examine the characteristics of nursing students and curriculum development of undergraduate nursing education from the opinions of Boromarajonani College of Nursing Saraburi, Thailand stakeholders. The population included 4 groups: 1) the alumni who have graduated within the past 5 years and currently work in primary, secondary, and tertiary care units, 2) the supervisors and colleagues of the alumni, 3) nursing lecturers, and 4) the current nursing students. The respondents who are the alumni, nursing lecturers, and current nursing student were selected using a purposive sampling, for the supervisors and colleagues were selected using snowball techniques. Semi-structured interview questions were used for data collection. Group discussions were conducted until saturation on 55 key informants. The qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis. Results showed the viewpoints of stakeholders on the characteristics of future nurse graduates were comprised of four elements: knowledge that meets standards; essential skills for self-development and lifelong learning process; good morals and professional ethics in providing nursing care; and nurse competencies in teamwork, communication, language, research, management, IT, life skills, and global literacy. The viewpoints on the development of the nursing curriculum focus on four elements: the learner, teaching and learning, course content, and instructor tasks. For learners, the admission criteria should include a minimum not only of knowledge, but also positive attitude, science, and art skills, since the nursing profession is both a science and the art of caring. Teaching and learning elements should be authentic, including exposure to real situations, an integrated network, and activities that improve nursing care. Course content was comprised of an updated curriculum, humanized nursing care, student center, theory and practice with moral integration, case-based study, critical thinking, multidisciplinary work, and love for the nursing profession. Instructor tasks are to elicit student ideas, provide opportunities to learn, support infrastructure, support technology use, and extra-curricular activities to develop the competencies of nursing students. Recommendations were that the curriculum administration should review the selection process of student candidates and instructional management to achieve expected outcomes of nursing characteristics in the future. The nurse lecturer should provide authentic and integrated instruction, decrease lecturing, cultivate a lifelong learning process, and sustain the nursing characteristics.

The Study of Attitude to Passive Euthanasia among Korean Nurses (간호사의 소극적 안락사에 대한 태도 조사)

  • Purpose: This study has been designed to identify attitudes to euthanasia held by Korean nurses. Method: Data were collected through a survey, and the participants in the study were 234 Korean nurses. Convenience sampling method was used and analysis of the data was done with SPSS PC for descriptive statistics, t-test and ANOVA. Results : 1. The mean score for euthanasia was 2.80. and the sub dimension mean scores were, patients' rights. 3.24, quality of life, 2 78, respect for life, 2.68, medical ethics, 2.50. 2. With respect to the general characteristics of participants there were statistically significant difference in total score according to religion (P= .01), and degree of influence of religion on behavior (P= .00). 3. There were statistically significant difference in score of quality of life according to religion (P= .04), degree of influence of religion on behavior (P= 00), decisions in euthanasia (P=.04), and legal permission (P= .04). 4. There was statistically significant difference in score of patient's right according to legal permission (P = .04). 5 There were statistically significant difference in the score of respect for life according to religion (P= .00), degree of influence of religion on behavior (P= .00), decision in euthnasia (P= .00), and legal permission (P= .00).

Knowledge of Turkish Mothers with Children in the 0-13 Age Group about Cancer Symptoms

  • Background: There have been few studies in Turkey on the incidence of childhood cancers. A mother's knowledge about signs and symptoms of cancer is important for early diagnosis, effective treatment, and improvement of life expectancy. This study was conducted with a group of mothers of children, aged 0-13, at a Family Health Center (FHC) in Turkey's Eastern Black Sea Region, to analyze their knowledge about cancer symptoms in childhood. Materials and Methods: The study group of this descriptive/cross-sectional research comprised 2,061 mothers, ages 19-49, at an FHC in the Eastern Black Sea Region in February 1, 2011 - June 1, 2011. Before the study, permission was obtained from the local ethics board and the institutions concerned. A value of p<0.05 was accepted as statistically significant. Results: Of the mothers, 34.9% were between the ages of 40-47, 40.5% had three children, 73.8% had no experience with children with cancer, 45.9% said they learned about cancer on television, 39.7% stated that the primary reason for childhood cancer was the mother's smoking during pregnancy, 68.8% said that early diagnosis would save a child, and 98% wanted to learn about childhood cancer. Conclusion: It was determined that the mothers' knowledge of cancer was deficient.

Influence of Ethical Sensitivity and Person-environment Fit on Person-centered Care of Nurses in Long-term Care Hospitals (요양병원 간호사의 윤리적민감성과 개인-환경적합성이 인간중심돌봄에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The study examined the effects of ethical sensitivity and person-environment fit on person-centered care of nurses in long-term care hospitals. Methods: The participants were 111 nurses. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression analysis with the SPSS program. Results: The mean of person-centered care was 2.95±0.62 out of 5. There were significant differences in person-centered care in terms of age, shift pattern, total clinical career, and educational experience of person-centered care. Person-centered care and ethical sensitivity, person-centered care and person-environment fit showed a positive correlation. Factors affecting the person-centered care were the age (20-29), shift pattern (three shift), person-environment fit. The explanatory power was 42%. Conclusion: These results can be used to increase the person-environment fit and adopt a differented approach based on age and shift pattern in order to enhance person-centered care. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and apply an person-centered care program for nurses in long-term care hospitals.

Design and Evaluation of the Program on the Internet for Sexuality Education of Adolescences (사춘기 청소년의 성교육 활성화를 위한 인터넷기반 교수-학습 프로그램의 내용설계 및 평가도구 개발)

  • Sexuality education in the period of adolescents need much care and attention. The programs of sexual education through the Internet are excellent resources for adolescents to gain the information related to their sexual health. And systematic program which is necessary for adolescents to manage their sexual health has been rarely found in Korea. The purpose of this study was to offer valuable database for program design and evaluation on sexual education of middle school students through the Internet. Needs assessment for the information of sexual education on the internet among middle school students were carried out. A questionnaire survey was conducted with respondents of 602 middle school students from January to March in 2002. In the sexual counseling center for middle school students, counseling cases through internet were analyzed and evaluated from October, 2001 to September, 2002, We have selected 16 Sexual educational websites in Seoul confirmed Korean Educational Human Resource. Contents which was illustrated in 16 sexual educational websites were analyzed and evaluated by 12 sexual counselors. Design and evaluation of the program on the internet for sexuality education of adolescences was conducted on the basis of this study results by middle school expert teachers, sexual counselors, sexuality education professionals. Data was statistically analyzed using dBSTAT 4.0 for Windows. The extent and phase of the teaching-learning program of the sexuality education on the internet was seen as follows : 1. We evaluated to need for sexuality education on the internet by middle school student. 2. We assessed the properness of sexuality education curriculum on the internet frequently used by middle school students. 3. We designed teaching strategy and learning program for sexuality education of the middle school students. 4. We developed the assessment method for the teaching-learning program of the sexuality education in adolescences on the internet. Middle school students responded that sexual education through Internet is needed in the order of programs related to acquaintances with opposite sex, Sexual culture and ethics, Sexual health, Reproductive health structure and development, Marriage and family, Psychology of Sexuality, Pregnancy and birth. In the internet counseling, cases on the 'reproductive health structure and development' was ranked as the top. In short we have found the most needs as follows; Meaning of the marriage life and having family, Sexes and Love, Human relation, Sexual Culture.We recommend as follows on the basis of this study results: 1. It is necessary for sexuality education program on the internet to specify according to age and target the specific individual needs. 2. Sexual educators have to employ various educational materials such as flash, cartoon, multimedia in order to provide effective sexuality education. 3. Internet based sex education need to be evaluated regularly through reassessment of the effectiveness of sexuality education for content quality and richness.

Ethical Issues in the Forth Industrial Revolution and the Enhancement of Bioethics Education in Korean Universities (4차 산업혁명 시대의 윤리적 이슈와 대학의 생명윤리교육 방향 제고)

  • This article explores some of the ethical issues associated with the fourth industrial revolution and suggests new directions for bioethics education in Korean universities. Some countries have recently developed guidelines and regulations based on the legal and ethical considerations of the benefits and social risks of new technologies associated with the fourth industrial revolution. Foreign universities have also created courses (both classroom and online) that deal with these issues and help to ensure that these new technologies are developed in an ethically appropriate fashion. In South Korea too there have been attempts to enhance bioethics education to meet the changing demands of society. However, bioethics education in Korea remains focused on traditional bioethical topics and largely neglects the ethical issues related to emerging technologies. Furthermore, Korean universities offer no online courses in bioethics and the classroom courses that do exist are generally treated as electives. In order to improve bioethics education in Korean universities, we suggest that (a) new course should be developed for interprofessional education; (b) courses in bioethics should be treated as required subjects gradually; (c) online courses should be prepared, and (d) universities should continually revise course contents in response to the development of new technologies.

How Patients in Clinical Trials Understand Informed Consent (만성신장질환자의 임상시험 설명문 및 동의서 이해도와 관련 요인)

  • The purpose of this study was to identify how patients with chronic kidney disease understand informed consent and related factors for clinical trials. Data from a paper-based survey was collected from July 1, 2017 to April 30, 2018. The subjects for this study were 85 adult patients with chronic kidney disease who were participating in clinical trials. Surveys were conducted by a tool modified from QuIC as designated by Joffe in 2001. The QuIC consists of two parts: objective and subjective cognition. These tools were modified for this study. The average score for the objective understanding (OU) of informed consent for clinical trials was 69.56; the average score for the subjective understanding (SU) of informed consent for clinical trials was 3.28. It was found that health literacy predicted OU (F=27.709, p<.001) while SU was predicted by additional information (F=-3.095, p<.003), question (F=13.603, p<.001), and informed consent (F=-4.833, p<.001). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that the understanding of informed consent for clinical trials among patients with chronic kidney disease is relatively low. Accordingly, alternative methods that consider each patient's health literacy levels and related factors need to be considered in order to improve their understanding of informed consents during the clinical trial process.
