  • Trichinella spiralis (T. spiralis) has been reported to induce angiogenesis and a supply of nutrients and to act as a reliable waste disposal system by induction of the expression of the angiogenic molecule vascular endothelial cell growth factor (VEGF) during nurse cell formation. However, the mechanism underlying the induction of VEGF in nurse cells by T. spiralis has not yet been defined. Some research has pointed to the possibility of hypoxia in nurse cells, but whether hypoxia occurs in infected muscle or nurse cells has not been studied. It is also a matter of debate whether hypoxia induces the expression of VEGF and subsequent angiogenesis in infected muscle. Recent studies showed that thymosin ${\beta}4$, a potent VEGF-inducing protein, was expressed at a very early stage of muscle infection by T. spiralis, suggesting that VEGF is induced at an early stage in nurse cells. Furthermore, hypoxia was not detected in any nurse cell stage but was detected in inflammatory cells. The findings suggest that induction of angiogenesis by VEGF in T. spiralis-infected nurse cells is mediated by thymosin ${\beta}4$ and unrelated to hypoxia.

  • This paper aims to probe the cell differentiation and gene activity in early Oogenesis from Dendrolimus spectabilis Butler by transmission electron microscope. The 8 cystocytes are formed by mitosis of the Oogonia, and differentiated to the 1 Oocyte and 7 nurse cells. The oocyte and nurse cells are connected by ring canals, through which the cytoplasmic organelles such as mitochondria, free ribosomes, and electron dense granular materials are passed from nurse cells to o cyte. Many replication fork in the cystocyte nuclei and 2 transcriptional units of $2.7{\mu}m\;and\;0.36{\mu}m\;or\;0.5{\mu}m$ in the nurse cells are observed by the chromatin spreading technique. It is possible that transcriptional units are passed from nurse cells to Oocyte.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the influencing factors on anxiety of patients who had received hemopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT). Method: A total of 81 patients who had undergone a HSCT at a university hospital were recruited from July of 2001 to June of 2002. They were asked to complete questionnaires about anxiety, self-esteem, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support. Result: The mean score of anxiety, self-esteem, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support was 41.9, 3.0, 4.6, 7.6 and 7.3, respectively. A significant negative correlation was found between anxiety and self-esteem. Self-esteem was positively correlated with family support, doctor's support and nurse's support. The major variable that influenced anxiety was the self-esteem, explaining 25.4% of the anxiety. Conclusion: On the basis of these results, it is necessary for HSCT patients to develop a nursing intervention for the enhancement of self esteem. Also, family support, doctor's support and nurse's support should be considered as a main support system in the nursing strategy for improving the quality of life of patients undergone HSCT.

  • A observation of the ovarian development and oogenesis of Pieris rapae Linne has been carried out during metamorphosis using stereo-microscope, light microscope and electron microscope. The results obtained through this experiment are as follows: 1. The ovarian development and vitellogenesis begin at the 3-day old pupa and the 6-day old pupa respectively, and the adult ovary right after their emergence contains a few mature eggs. 2. The species described above are further observed at six different stages in oogenesis, and the results are summarized as follows. 1) Pieris rapae has polytrophic ovarioles. The cell organelles of the nurse cells are transfered to the oocyte through the ring canal at the early oogenesis. 2) At stage 2, the nuclear envelope of oocyte nucleus is less infolding than that of nurse cell nucleus. In the oocyte cytoplasm a large number of ribosomes are observed. 3) At stage 3 and 4, many micropinocytotic vesicles are observed in the oocyte cytoplasm. These vesicles are fused together to form large proteid yolks. 4) At stage 5, the vitelline membrane is laid down in the intercellular space between the follicle cells and oocyte. 5) At stage 6, the chorion is formed by the follicle cells. 6) A micropyle and a number of aeropyle are observed on the surface of a mature egg.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the relationship between udder and teat characteristics and somatic cell count (SCC). A total of 749 (73.1%) milk samples from 1,024 quarters of 259 Holstein cows contained less than 200,000 somatic cells/ml, while 132 (12.9%) quarters contained more than 500,000 somatic cells/ml. Prior to data analysis, somatic cell counts were transformed to natural logarithm. The mean SCS {$log_e(SCS/10^3)$} of milk samples from the front quarters was lower than milk samples from the rear quarters. The highest SCS was observed from cows with the step-shaped udder and the pear-shaped teats, respectively. Increased SCS was observed from cows with large teat diameter, short teat length, short distance between the teat tip to floor (p<0.05) and with increase in parity, respectively.

  • P-lement mediated enhancer detector lines (EDla) were screened for reporter gene (1acZ expression In the ovary of Drosophila mejanogaster Cell-type spedfic 1acZ expression can be grouped Into three parts such as in the geimline, soma, and both. LacZ expression In germline cells was devided into 2 types; expression in nurse cells or in both of the nurse cells and oocote. In the stage-9 to stage-lO follicles, lacZ expression was observed either In the whole follicle cells around oocote or in the subpopulation of follicle cells in egg chamber. lacZ expression in the subset of follicle cells are showed in the centripetal follicle cells or the columnar follicle cells except centripetal follicle cells. Several lines showed anterior to postedor gradient pattern of lacZ expression in the follicle cells. Interestingly there were 3 lines in which lacZ was expressed In the polar cells and/or the horder cells of egg chamber. These lacZ expression patterns in the different ovarian cells of independent EDla reflect the cell type-spedflc expression of maternal genes nesr the P-element insertion, and might provide a basis for cloning of genes involved in oogenesis of Drosophila.
