Optimization of a numerical wave flume for efficient simulations

  • The present work investigates the wave generation and propagation in a 2-D wave flume to assess the effect of wave reflection for varying beach slopes by using a numerical tool based on computational fluid dynamics. At first, a numerical wave flume (NWF) is created with different mesh sizes to select the optimum mesh size for time efficient simulation. In addition, different beach slope conditions are introduced such as 1:3, 1:5 and numerical beach at the far end of the NWF to optimize the wave reflection solutions. In addition, several parameters are analysed in order to optimize the solutions. The developed numerical model and its key findings are compared with analytical and experimental surface elevation results and it reveals a good correlation. Finally, the recommended numerical solutions are validated with the experimental findings.

  • This paper presents the results of wave profile detection from video image using the Mexican hat function. The Mexican hat function has been extensively used in the field of signal processing to detect discontinuity in the images. The analysis was done on the numerical image and video images of waves that were taken in the small wave flume. The results show that the Mexican hat function is an excellent tool for wave profile detection.

  • For design of maritime structure, it is necessary to evaluate the effect and stability of the structure against wave action. Laboratory model experiments and their empirical formulas are mainly used to estimate those at present, although empirical formulas have a problem of accuracy and hydraulic experiments of cost and duration. In addition, performance-based design, which may be popularized as a new design concept in the near future, requires much more information than that obtained by empirical formulas and laboratory tests. Thus, numerical simulation may become more important hereafter for structure design. (omitted)

  • This paper presents a parametric study on an oscillating water column (OWC) wave energy converter (WEC). This OWC has been planned for installation in the breakwaters on isolated islands located away from the mainland. Both a numerical analysis and a model experiment are utilized for determining a proper conceptual design for this purpose. Various design parameters, including the configurations and dimensions, are evaluated through the numerical analysis, which is based on a potential flow theory, and several design concepts are then selected as candidates. The model experiment using a 2D wave flume is conducted to evaluate the effects of the design parameters and compare the performances of the candidates. Based on the overall results of the numerical analysis and model experiment, a conceptual design of the OWC WEC applicable to a breakwater is selected.

  • 본 연구는 불규칙파동장에 설치된 불투과잠제를 대상으로 잠제의 배후에서 파랑에너지의 변화특성을 고찰한다. 이를 위해 VOF법에 기초한 2차원수치파동수로를 이용하였다. VOF법은 쇄파를 포함한 자유수면의 수치 모의가 가능한 가장 효과적인 방법이다. 잠제배후에서 주파수스펙트럼의 해석결과에 의하면 쇄파는 잠제의 파랑제어능에 중요한 역할을 하고 있음을 확인하였다. 잠제의 천단상에서 쇄파가 발생하는 경우에 일렬잠제는 파에너지가 단주기측으로 이동하고 이열잠제의 경우는 스펙트럼의 피크가 뚜렷하지 않고 비슷한 크기의 에너지가 전 주파수대에 걸쳐 분포됨을 확인하였다.

경사파중 수중평판에 의한 파랑변형 (Wave Diffractions by Submerged Flat Plate in oblique Waves)

  • This paper describes the effect of wave control using submerged flat plate by the numerical calculation and the hydraulic model test. The boundary element method is used to develop a numerical solution for the flow field caused by monochromatic oblique waves incident upon an infinitely long, sumerged flat plate situated in arbitrary water depth. The effect of wave blocking is examined according to the change of length, submerged depth of flat plate and incident angles. Numerical results show that longer length, shallower submergence of flat plate and larger incident angles enhance the effect of wave blocking. To validate numerical analysis method, hydraulic model test was conducted in 2-D wave flume with 60 cm metal sheet. Reflected waves are extracted from water surface elevation in front of the location of a submerged plate by least square method with 3 wave gages. From comparing experimental results with numerical results, efficiency of numerical analysis method by this study could be confirmed well within wide ranges of wave frequencies.

수치파 수조에서의 극치파 생성과 수조실험을 통한 검증 연구 (Generation of Freak Waves in a Numerical Wave Tank and Its Validation in Wave Flume)

  • The freak wave, also known as New-Year-Wave in the north Atlantic, is relatively large and spontaneous ocean surface wave that can sink even large ships and destroy maritime structures. To understand oceanic conditions that develop freak waves, we simulated and generated two versions of scale-downed waves (1:64 and 1:42) in a numerical wave tank and compared the results with the experiment in wave flume. Both of the breaking and non-breaking waves were generated in the simulation. The numerical simulation was implemented based on the finite volume method and a genetic optimization algorithm. Random values were assigned as the initial values for the parameter in the control function, which produced signals representing the motion of wave-maker. The same signal obtained from the optimization process was used for both of the simulation and the experiment. By varying the object function and restrictions of the simulation, a best profile of design wave was selected based on the characteristics, height and period of simulated waves. Results showed that the simulation and experiment with the scale of 1:42 agreed better with freak waves in the natural condition. The presented simulation method will contribute to saving the time and cost for conducting subsequent response analyses of motion under freak waves in the course of the model test for ship and maritime structure.

슬리트케이슨제에 의한 반사율과 구조물에 작용하는 파압에 관한 2차원 및 3차원해석 (Two and Three Dimensional Analysis about the Reflection Coefficient by the Slit Caisson and Resulting Wave Pressure Acting on the Structure)

  • 최근 슬리트케이슨제와 같은 유공방파제의 파랑제어특성에 대한 이론적 실험적 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 규칙파의 작용하에 슬리트케이슨에 의한 반사율의 특성과, 전면유공부 및 유수실의 내부벽면에 작용하는 파압을 2차원 및 3차원수치파동수로에서 각각 추정하고, 그 결과를 검토하였다. 수치실험에서는 주기 7초, 9초, 11초 및 13초와 각각의 주기에 대해 파형경사 0.02, 0.03 및 0.04를 갖는 입사파고의 수치실험안을 설정하였고, 본 연구에서 사용된 2차원 및 3차원의 수치해석은 Navier-Stokes운동방정식에 기초한 이상류(이상류(二相流)) 수치 모델로서, 이는 타해석기법에 비해 복잡한 수면변동에 대한 물리현상을 쉽게 재현할 수 있으며, 수치프로그램의 구성이 보다 간략하게 되는 장점이 있다. 실험결과에 의하면, 반사율에 있어서 주기가 짧은 경우에는 2차원해석이 상당히 큰 값을 나타내지만, 주기가 길어지고 파형경사가 큰 경우에는 2차원해석과 3차원해석의 결과가 거의 동일한 값을 나타낸다. 파압에 있어서 주기가 짧은 경우에는 두 해석법에서 차이는 작지만, 주기가 길어지고 파형경사가 큰 경우에는 차이가 크게 나타나는 경향을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • This paper presents a comparative study on numerical and wave-maker generated waves. The wave-makers employed to carry out the experiments have mathematical forms. The linear and quadratic models were tested. When it comes numerical analysis, the authors used the FLUENT which is widely used commercial code. Only two dimensional cases were considered. The experiments were done in a small wave flume. The waves were generated for various frequencies to examine the characteristics of the water waves. The comparison of the numerical and wave-maker generated waves were made.

공진장치를 이용한 단주기파랑과 고립파의 제어 (Effectiveness of a Wave Resonator under Short-period Waves and Solitary Waves)

  • 본 연구에서는 고파랑의 단주기파랑과 고립파를 동시에 저감시키기 위한 저감공으로 단주기파랑에 대해 기연구개발된 공진장치를 기설의 방파제 항구부에 부착하는 공법을 검토하였다. 이와 같은 저감공은 공진현상으로부터 단주기파랑의 입사에너지를 포획하여 기설의 방파제 배후로 전달되는 파랑에너지를 저감시키는 특성을 갖는다. 수치해석에 있어서 단주기파랑에 대해서는 연직선Green함수에 기초한 특이점분포법을, 고립파에 대해서는 3차원수치파동수로를 이용하는 3차원혼상류해석법을 각각 적용하였고, 기존의 수치해석결과 및 실험결과와 비교 분석하여 본 수치해석법의 타당성을 검증하였다. 이로부터 공진장치가 없는 경우와 대비 검토하여 단주기파랑 및 고립파의 제어에 대한 공진장치의 제어능을 다각도로 검토한 결과, 그의 유효성을 충분히 확인할 수 있었다. 그리고, 제어대상의 고립파에 대해 공진장치의 최적치수가 존재한다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.
