Three time-discontinuous Galerkin quadrature element methods (TDGQEMs) are developed for structural dynamic problems. The weak-form time-discontinuous Galerkin (TDG) statements, which are capable of capturing possible displacement and/or velocity discontinuities, are employed to formulate the three types of quadrature elements, i.e., single-field, single-field/least-squares and two-field. Gauss-Lobatto quadrature rule and the differential quadrature analog are used to turn the weak-form TDG statements into a system of algebraic equations. The stability, accuracy and numerical dissipation and dispersion properties of the formulated elements are examined. It is found that all the elements are unconditionally stable, the order of accuracy is equal to two times the element order minus one or two times the element order, and the high-order elements possess desired high numerical dissipation in the high-frequency domain and low numerical dissipation and dispersion in the low-frequency domain. Three fundamental numerical examples are investigated to demonstrate the effectiveness and high accuracy of the elements, as compared with the commonly used time integration schemes.
This study constructs the reduced system by two-level condensation scheme. This scheme consists of two steps. First step selects the candidate area for the primary degrees of freedom by energy estimation in element level. In the second step, the primary degrees of freedom are selected by the sequential elimination scheme. The efficiency and reliability of this scheme is shown through the prediction of eigenvalues of a few numerical examples. Time integration in the reduced system can save the computing time effectively. The well-constructed reduced system can present the accurate behavior of the structure under arbitrary dynamic loads so much as the global system. Through the numerical example, the efficiency and reliability of the proposed scheme will be demonstrated.
The nonlinear resonant response of an axially moving beam is investigated in this paper via two different numerical techniques: the pseudo-arclength continuation technique and direct time integration. In particular, the response is examined for the system in the neighborhood of a three-to-one internal resonance between the first two modes as well as for the case where it is not. The equation of motion is reduced into a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equation via the Galerkin technique. This set is solved using the pseudo-arclength continuation technique and the results are confirmed through use of direct time integration. Vibration characteristics of the system are presented in the form of frequency-response curves, time histories, phase-plane diagrams, and fast Fourier transforms (FFTs).
The solutions of neighboring optimal control are typically obtained using the sweep method or transition matrices. Due to the numerical integration, however, the gain matrix can become infinite as time go to final one in the transition matrices, and the Riccati solution can become infinite when the final time free. To overcome these disadvantages, this paper proposes the pseudospectral Legendre method which is to first discreteize the linear boundary value problem using the global orthogonal polynomial, then transforms into an algebraic equations. Because this method is not necessary to take any integration of transition matrix or Riccati equation, it can be usefully used in real-time operation. Finally, its performance is verified by the numerical example for the space vehicle's orbit transfer.

In the analysis of metal forming processes by the finite element method, there are many numerical instabilities such as element locking, hourglass mode, shear locking. These instabilities may have a bad effect upon accuracy and convergence. The present work is concerned with improvement of stability and efficiency in two dimensional rigid-plastic finite element method using various type of elements and numerical integration schemes. AS metal forming examples, upsetting and backward extrusion are taken for comparison among the methods : various element types and numerical integration schemes. comparison is made in terms of stability and efficiency. As a result, it has been shown that the finite element computation is stabilized from the viewpoint of computational time, convergency, and numerical instability.

The non-linear static analysis of reinforced concrete (RC) structures using the three-dimensional (3D) finite element method is a time-consuming and challenging task. Moreover, this type of analysis encounters numerical problems such as the lack of convergence of results in the stages of growth and propagation of cracks in the structure. The time integration analysis along with the mass scaling (MS) technique is usually used to overcome these limitations. Despite the use of this method in the 3D finite element analysis of RC structures, a comprehensive study has not been conducted so far to assess the effects of the MS method on the accuracy of results. This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of the MS method in the non-linear quasi-static finite element analysis of RC structures. To this aim, different types of RC structures were simulated using the finite element approach based on the implicit time integration method and the mass scaling technique. The influences of effective parameters of the MS method (i.e., the allowable values of increase in the mass of the RC structure, the relationship between the duration of the applied load and fundamental vibration period of the RC structure, and the pattern of applied loads) on the accuracy of the simulated results were investigated. The accuracy of numerical simulation results has been evaluated through comparison with existing experimental data. The results of this study show that the achievement of accurate structural responses in the implicit time integration analyses using the MS method involves the appropriate selection of the effective parameters of the MS method.
Most connections of steel structures exhibit flexible behaviour under cyclic loading. The flexible connections can be assumed as nonlinear rotational springs attached to the ends of each beam. The nonlinear behaviour of the connections can be considered by suitable moment-rotation relationship. Time-history analysis by direct integration method can be used as a powerful technique to determine the nonlinear dynamic response of the structure. In conventional numerical integration, the response is evaluated for a series of short time increments. The limitations on the size of time intervals can be removed by using Chen and Robinson improved time history analysis method, in which the integrated displacements are used as the new variables in integrated equation of motion. The proposed method permits longer time intervals and reduces the computational works. In this paper the nonlinearity behaviour of the structure is summarized on the connections, and the step by step improved time-history analysis is used to calculate the dynamic response of the structure. Several numerical calculations which indicate the applicability and advantages of the proposed methodology are presented. These calculations illustrate the importance of the effect of the nonlinear behaviour of the flexible connections in the calculation of the dynamic response of steel frames.

This paper presents a design procedure of an integrated inductor with a magnetic core for power converters. This procedure considerably reduces design time and effort. The proposed design procedure is verified by the development of an inductor model dedicated to the monolithic integration of DC-DC converters for portable applications. The numerical simulation based on the FEM (finite elements method) shows that 3D modeling of the integrated inductor allows better estimation of the electrical parameters of the desired inductor. The optimization of the electrical parameter values is based on the numerical analysis of the influence of the geometric parameters on the electrical characteristics of the inductor. Using the VHDL-AMS language, implementation of the integrated inductor in a micro Buck converter demonstrate that simulation results present a very promising approach for the monolithic integration of DC-DC converters.
