  • Current state and perspective of DNS of turbulence and turbulent combustion are discussed with feature trend of the fastest supercomputer in the world. Based on the perspective of DNS of turbulent combustion, possibility of perfect simulations of IC engine is shown. In 2020, the perfect simulation will be realized with 30 billion grid points by 1EXAFlops supercomputer, which requires 4 months CPU time. The CPU time will be reduced to about 4 days if several developments were achieved in the current fundamental researches. To shorten CPU time required for DNS of turbulent combustion, two numerical methods are introduced to full-explicit full-compressible DNS code. One is compact finite difference filter to reduce spatial resolution requirements and numerical oscillations in small scales, and another is well-known point-implicit scheme to avoid quite small time integration of the order of nanosecond for fully explicit DNS. Availability and accuracy of these numerical methods have been confirmed carefully for auto-ignition, planar laminar flame and turbulent premixed flames. To realize DNS of IC engine with realistic kinetic mechanism, several DNS of elemental combustion process in IC engines has been conducted.

  • This article investigates the different numerical methods, which are widely used for purpose of simulating a fire compartment the particular numerical methods such as finite difference, finite element, control Volume, and finite analysis are discribed in order to understand basic concepts and their applications. The fire simulations using fferent methods for the different physical geometrics have been reported in many recent literatures The convergence rate, the accuracy, and the stability are no simply dependent upon the specific method, The study of popular nu-merical methods by being compared among those is therefore significant to understand the nu-merical simulation of fire compartment.

  • GASFLOW-MPI is a widely used scalable computational fluid dynamics numerical tool to simulate the fluid turbulence behavior, combustion dynamics, and other related thermal-hydraulic phenomena in nuclear power plant containment. An efficient scalable linear solver for the large-scale pressure equation is one of the key issues to ensure the computational efficiency of GASFLOW-MPI. Several advanced Krylov subspace methods and scalable preconditioning methods are compared and analyzed to improve the computational performance. With the help of the powerful computational capability, the large eddy simulation turbulent model is used to resolve more detailed turbulent behaviors. A backward-facing step flow is performed to study the free shear layer, the recirculation region, and the boundary layer, which is widespread in many scientific and engineering applications. Numerical results are compared with the experimental data in the literature and the direct numerical simulation results by GASFLOW-MPI. Both time-averaged velocity profile and turbulent intensity are well consistent with the experimental data and direct numerical simulation result. Furthermore, the frequency spectrum is presented and a -5/3 energy decay is observed for a wide range of frequencies, satisfying the turbulent energy spectrum theory. Parallel scaling tests are also implemented on the KIT/IKET cluster and a linear scaling is realized for GASFLOW-MPI.

  • Despite extensive research efforts, the mechanism of the nucleate boiling phenomena is still not clear. A direct numerical simulation of the boiling phenomena is one of the promising approaches in order to clarify its heat transfer characteristics and discuss their mechanism. Therefore, many DNS procedures have been developed based on recent highly advancing computer technologies. This brief review focuses on the state of the art in direct numerical simulation of the pool boiling phenomena over the past two decades. In this review, the fundamentals of the boiling phenomena and the bubble departure and micro-layer models are briefly introduced, and then the numerical procedures for tracking or capturing interface/surface shape such as the front tracking method, level set method, volume of fluid treatments, and other methods (Lattice Boltzmann method, phase-field method and so on) are briefly reviewed.

  • High-strength structural bolts have been utilized for beam-to-column connections in steel-framed structural buildings. Failure of these components may be caused by the bolt shank fracture or threads stripping-off, documented in the literature. Furthermore, these structural bolts are galvanized for corrosion resistance or quenched-and-tempered in the manufacturing process. This paper adopted the finite element simulation to demonstrate discrete mechanical performance for these bolts under tensile loading conditions, the coated and uncoated numerical model has been built up for two numerical integration methods: explicit and implicit. Experimental testing and numerical methods can fully approach the failure mechanism of these bolts and their ultimate load capacities. Comparison has also been conducted for two numerical integration methods, demonstrating that the explicit integration procedure is also suitable for solving quasi-static problems. Furthermore, by using precise bolt models in T-Stub, more accurately simulate the mechanical behavior of T-Stub, which will lay the foundation of the mechanical properties of steel bolted joints.

  • Three-dimensional and unsteady flow analysis is a practical target of high performance computation. As recently advances of computers, a numerical prediction by the large eddy simulation (LES) are introduced and evaluated for various engineering problems. Its advanced methods for the complex turbulent flows are discussed by several examples applied for aerodynamic designs, analysis of fluid flow mechanisms and their interaction to complex phenomena. These results of time-dependent and three-dimensional phenomena are visualized by interactive graphics and animations.

  • SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) process is presently considered as one of the most effective techniques for removing nitric oxides from exhaust gases. In this study, based on the conceptually designed SCR reactor of 500 MW coal fired power plant. a reduced scale (1/20) SCR reactor model was made to analyze the flow pattern in front of catalyst layer according to the guide vane's design factors such as the number, interval, and angle of vanes. The results of the test were compared to those numerical simulation in order to assure the reliability of two methods. On the basis of our study. the critical Reynolds number (2.0$\times$ 10$^{5}$ ) was proposed for ensuring the similarity between the reduced scale model and the prototype of SCR reactor. Optimum design parameters of guide vanes were determined as follows, 4 vanes, the first vane angle of 93$^{\circ}$, and the vane intervals of 0.85 S/n, 1.05 S/n, 1.1 S/n, 1.0S/n, 1.0S/n (S: the distance of duct, n: the number of guide vanes). The excellent agreement between the results of the numerical simulation and the reduced scale model provides the validation of two methods for prediction of flow through SCR reactor.
