Inevitable source-uncertainties in geometry configuration, boundary condition, and material properties may deviate the structural dynamics from its expected responses. This paper aims to examine the influence of these uncertainties on the vibration of functionally graded beams. Finite element procedures are presented for Timoshenko beams and utilized to generate reliable datasets. A prerequisite to the uncertainty quantification of the beam vibration using Monte Carlo simulation is generating large datasets, that require executing the numerical procedure many times leading to high computational cost. Utilizing artificial neural networks to model beam vibration can be a good approach. Initially, the optimal network for each beam configuration can be determined based on numerical performance and probabilistic criteria. Instead of executing thousands of times of the finite element procedure in stochastic analysis, these optimal networks serve as good alternatives to which the convergence of the Monte Carlo simulation, and the sensitivity and probabilistic vibration characteristics of each beam exposed to randomness are investigated. The simple procedure presented here is efficient to quantify the uncertainty of different stochastic behaviors of composite structures.

This study presents an approach for approximation an unknown function from a numerical data set based on the synthesis of a neuro-fuzzy model. An adaptive input data space parting method, which is used for building hyperbox-shaped clusters in the input data space, is proposed. Each data cluster is implemented here as a fuzzy set using a membership function MF with a hyperbox core that is constructed from a min vertex and a max vertex. The focus of interest in proposed approach is to increase degree of fit between characteristics of the given numerical data set and the established fuzzy sets used to approximate it. A new cutting procedure, named NCP, is proposed. The NCP is an adaptive cutting procedure using a pure function $\Psi$ and a penalty function $\tau$ for direction the input data space parting process. New algorithms named CSHL, HLM1 and HLM2 are presented. The first new algorithm, CSHL, built based on the cutting procedure NCP, is used to create hyperbox-shaped data clusters. The second and the third algorithm are used to establish adaptive neuro- fuzzy inference systems. A series of numerical experiments are performed to assess the efficiency of the proposed approach.

In recent decades, it has been realized that increasing the lateral stiffness of structure subjected to lateral loads is not the only parameter enhancing safety or reducing damage. Factors such as ductility and damping govern the structural response due to lateral loads. Despite the significant contribution of damping in resisting lateral loads, especially at resonance, there is no accurate mathematical representation for it. The main objective of this study is to develop a damping identification procedure for linear systems based on a mixed numerical-experimental approach, assuming viscous damping. The proposed procedure has been applied to a laboratory experiment associated with a numerical model, where a hollow rectangular steel cantilever column, having three lumped masses, has been fixed on a shaking table subjected to different exciting waves. The modal damping ratio has been identified; in addition, the effect of adding filling material to the hollow specimen has been studied in relation to damping enhancement. The results have revealed that the numerically computed response based on the identified damping is in a good fitting with the measured response. Moreover, the filling material has a significant effect in increasing the modal damping.
Moment-thrust-curvatures ($M-P-{\Phi}$ curves) are fundamental quantities for detailed descriptions of basic properties such as stiffness and strength of a section under axial loads required for accurate computation of the deformations of reinforced concrete or composite columns. Currently, the finite-element-based methods adopting small fibers for analyzing a section are commonly used for generating the $M-P-{\Phi}$ curves and they require large amounts of computational time and effort. Further, the conventional numerical procedure using the force-control method might encounter divergence problems under high compression or tension. Therefore, this paper proposes a divergence-free approach, combining the use of the displacement-control and the Quasi-Newton scheme in the incremental-iterative procedure, for generating the $M-P-{\Phi}$ curves of arbitrary sections. An efficient method for computing the strength from concrete components is employed, where the stress integration is executed by layer-based algorithms. For easy modeling of residual stress, cross sections of structural steel components are meshed into fibers for strength resultants. The numerical procedure is elaborated in detail with flowcharts. Finally, extensive validating examples from previously published research are given for verifying the accuracy of the proposed method.
In this paper, we present a new explicit procedure using periodic cubic B-spline interpolation polynomials to solve linear and nonlinear dynamic equation of motion governing single degree of freedom (SDOF) systems. In the proposed approach, a straightforward formulation was derived from the approximation of displacement with B-spline basis in a fluent manner. In this way, there is no need to use a special pre-starting procedure to commence solving the problem. Actually, this method lies in the case of conditionally stable methods. A simple step-by-step algorithm is implemented and presented to calculate dynamic response of SDOF systems. The validity and effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated with four examples. The results were compared with those from the numerical methods such as Duhamel integration, Linear Acceleration and also Exact method. The comparison shows that the proposed method is a fast and simple procedure with trivial computational effort and acceptable accuracy exactly like the Linear Acceleration method. But its power point is that its time consumption is notably less than the Linear Acceleration method especially in the nonlinear analysis.
The present work describes a new time marching procedure for structural dynamics analyses. In this novel technique, time integration parameters are automatically evaluated according to the properties of the model. Such parameters are locally defined, allowing the user to input a numerical dissipation property for each element, which defines the amount of numerical dissipation to be introduced. Since the integration parameters are locally defined as a function of the structural element itself, the time marching technique adapts according to the model, providing enhanced accuracy. The new methodology is based on displacement-velocity relations and no computation of accelerations is required. Furthermore, the method is second order accurate, it has guaranteed stability, it is truly self-starting and it allows highly controllable algorithm dissipation in the higher modes. Numerical results are presented and compared to those provided by the Newmark and the Bathe methods, illustrating the good performance of the new time marching procedure.

The multi scale wavelet-Galerkin method implemented in an adaptive manner has an advantage of obtaining accurate solutions with a substantially reduced number of interpolation points. The method is becoming popular, but its numerical efficiency still needs improvement. The objectives of this investigation are to present a new numerical scheme to improve the performance of the multi scale adaptive wavelet-Galerkin method and to give detailed implementation procedure. Specifically, the subdomain technique suitable for multiscale methods is developed and implemented. When the standard wavelet-Galerkin method is implemented without domain subdivision, the interaction between very long scale wavelets and very short scale wavelets leads to a poorly-sparse system matrix, which considerably worsens numerical efficiency for large-sized problems. The performance of the developed strategy is checked in terms of numerical costs such as the CPU time and memory size. Since the detailed implementation procedure including preprocessing and stiffness matrix construction is given, researchers having experiences in standard finite element implementation may be able to extend the multi scale method further or utilize some features of the multiscale method in their own applications.
Modified virtual crack closure integral (MVCCI) technique has become very popular for computation of strain energy release rate (SERR) and stress intensity factor (SIF) for 2-D crack problems. The objective of this paper is to propose a numerical integration procedure for MVCCI so as to generalize the technique and make its application much wider. This new procedure called as numerically integrated MVCCI (NI-MVCCI) will remove the dependence of MVCCI equations on the type of finite element employed in the basic stress analysis. Numerical studies on fracture analysis of 2-D crack (mode I and II) problems have been conducted by employing 4-noded, 8-noded (regular & quarter-point), 9-noded and 12-noded finite elements. For non-singular (regular) elements at crack tip, NI-MVCCI technique generates the same results as MVCCI, but the advantage for higher order regular and singular elements is that complex equations for MVCCI need not be derived. Gauss numerical integration rule to be employed for 8-noded singular (quarter-point) element for accurate computation of SERR and SIF has been recommended based on the numerical studies.
In this study, a new numerical procedure for the generation of a nonlinear tailored group of waves is presented. The procedure is based on the transient wave group technique. In order to integrate the nonlinearity during the wave propagation in the computational method, the Navier-Stokes equations are applied as governing equations. The governing equations are discretized by finite volume approximation. The deformation of the free water surface in each time step is pursued with a moving grid. A two-dimensional, numerical wave tank for the simulation of the wave propagation is developed and tested in detail. The numeric results are compared first with analytical wave theories and with measurements, in order to examine the correctness of the numerical wave tank. Wave surface elevation and associated fields of velocity and pressure are numerically computed and compared with measurements. Very good agreements show up.

This paper presents a structural performance assessment of a historical masonry clock tower both using numerical and experimental process. The numerical assessment includes developing of finite element model with considering different types of soil-structure interaction systems, identifying the numerical dynamic characteristics, finite element model updating procedure, nonlinear time-history analysis and evaluation of seismic performance level. The experimental study involves determining experimental dynamic characteristics using operational modal analysis test method. Through the numerical and experimental processes, the current structural behavior of the masonry clock tower was evaluated. The first five experimental natural frequencies were obtained within 1.479-9.991 Hz. Maximum difference between numerical and experimental natural frequencies, obtained as 20.26%, was reduced to 4.90% by means of the use of updating procedure. According to the results of the nonlinear time-history analysis, maximum displacement was calculated as 0.213 m. The maximum and minimum principal stresses were calculated as 0.20 MPa and 1.40 MPa. In terms of displacement control, the clock tower showed only controlled damage level during the applied earthquake record.
