  • Brittle failure of rock is a classical rock mechanics problem. Rock failure not only involves initiation and propagation of single crack, but also is a complex problem associated with initiation, propagation and coalescence of many cracks. As the most important feature of rock material properties is the heterogeneity, the Weibull statistical distribution is employed in the rock failure process analysis (RFPA) method to describe the heterogeneity in rock properties. In this paper, the applications of the RFPA method in geotechnical engineering and rockburst modeling are introduced with emphasis, which can provide some references for relevant researches.

  • The dynamic model and displacement control of piezoelectric actuators, which are commercially available materials for managing extremely small displacements in the range of sub-nanometers, are presented. Piezoceramics have electromechanical characteristics that transduce energy between the electrical and mechanical domains. However, they have hysteresis between the input voltage and output displacement, and this behavior is very demanding and complicated. In this paper, we propose a method of designing the control algorithm, and present the dynamic modeling equations that represent the hysteretic behavior between input voltage and output displacement. For this process, the piezoelectric actuator is treated as a second-order linear dynamic system and system constants are determined by the system identification method. Also, a classical PID controller is designed and used to regulate the output displacement of the actuator. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, numerical simulation results are presented.

  • The paper is devoted to present the Continuum Strong Discontinuity Approach (CSDA) and to examine its capabilities for modeling cracking of concrete. After introducing the main ingredients of the CSDA, an isotropic continuum damage model, which distinguishes tension and compression states, is used to implicitly induce a projected traction separation-law that rules the cracking phenomena. Criteria for onset and propagation of material failure and specific finite elements with embedded discontinuities are also briefly sketched. Finally, some representative numerical simulations of cracking, in plain and reinforced concrete specimens, using the CSDA are presented.

  • A rational three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model is described and implemented for evaluating the behavior of high strength concrete slabs under transverse load. The concrete was idealized by using twenty-nodded isoparametric brick elements with embedded reinforcements. The concrete material modeling allows for normal (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC), which was calibrated based on experimental data. The behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an elastoplastic work-hardening model, and in tension a suitable post-cracking model based on tension stiffening and shear retention models are employed. The nonlinear equations have been solved using the incremental iterative technique based on the modified Newton-Raphson method. The FE formulation and material modeling is implemented into a finite element code in order to carry out the numerical study and to predict the behavior up to ultimate conditions of various slabs under transverse loads. The validity of the theoretical formulations and the program used was verified through comparison with available experimental data, and the agreement has proven to be very good. A parametric study has been also carried out to investigate the influence of different material and geometric properties on the behavior of HSC slabs. Influencing factors, such as concrete strength, steel ratio, aspect ratio, and support conditions on the load-deflection characteristics, concrete and steel stresses and strains were investigated.

  • The main purpose of this research work is to investigate the critical buckling load of functionally graded (FG) porous plates with graphene platelets (GPLs) reinforcement using generalized differential quadrature (GDQ) method at thermal condition. It is supposed that the GPL nanofillers and the porosity coefficient vary continuously along the plate thickness direction. Generally, the thermal distribution is considered to be nonlinear and the temperature changing continuously through the thickness of the nanocomposite plates according to the power-law distribution. To model closed cell FG porous material reinforced with GPLs, Halpin-Tsai micromechanical modeling in conjunction with Gaussian-Random field scheme are used, through which mechanical properties of the structures can be extracted. Based on the third order shear deformation theory (TSDT) and the Hamilton's principle, the equations of motion are established and solved for various boundary conditions (B.Cs). The fast rate of convergence and accuracy of the method are investigated through the different solved examples and validity of the present study is evaluated by comparing its numerical results with those available in the literature. A special attention is drawn to the role of GPLs weight fraction, GPLs patterns through the thickness, porosity coefficient and distribution of porosity on critical buckling load. Results reveal that the importance of thermal condition on of the critical load of FGP-GPL reinforced nanocomposite plates.

  • This paper presents a numerical model of multi phase flow of the mixtures of molten material-liquid-vapor, particularly in thermal nonequilibrium. It is a two-dimensional, transient, three-fluid model in Eulerian coordinates. The equations are solved numerically using the finite difference method that implicitly couples the rates of phase changes, momentum, and energy exchange to determine the pressure, density, and velocity fields. To examine the model's ability to predict an experimental data, calculations have been performed for tests of pouring hot particles and molten material into a water pool. The predictions show good agreement with the experimental data. It appears, however, that the interfacial heat transfer and breakup of molten material need improved models that can be applied to such high temperature, high pressure, multi phase flow conditions.

  • The masonry is a complex heterogeneous material and its shear deformation and fracture is associated with very complicated progressive failures in masonry structure, and is investigated in this paper using a mesoscopic mechanical modelling, Considering the heterogeneity of masonry material, based on the damage mechanics and elastic-brittle theory, the newly developed Material Failure Process Analysis (MFPA) system was brought out to simulate the cracking process of masonry, which was considered as a three-phase composite of the block phase, the mortar phase and the block-mortar interfaces. The crack propagation processes simulated with this model shows good agreement with those of experimental observations by other researchers. This finding indicates that the shear fracture of masonry observed at the macroscopic level is predominantly caused by tensile damage at the mesoscopic level. Some brittle materials are so weak in tension relative to shear that tensile rather than shear fractures are generated in pure shear loading.

  • Enhanced tensile properties of fiber reinforced concrete make it suitable for strengthening of reinforced concrete elements due to their superior corrosion resistance and high tensile strength properties. Recently, the use of fibers as strengthening material has increased motivating the development of numerical tools for the design of this type of intervention technique. This paper presents numerical analysis results carried out on a set of concrete beams reinforced with short fibers. To this purpose, a database of experimental results was collected from an available literature. A reliable and simple three-dimensional Finite Element (FE) model was defined. The linear and nonlinear behavior of all materials was adequately modeled by employing appropriate constitutive laws in the numerical simulations. To simulate the fiber reinforced concrete cracking tensile behavior an approach grounded on the solid basis of micromechanics was used. The results reveal that the developed models can accurately capture the performance and predict the load-carrying capacity of such reinforced concrete members. Furthermore, a parametric study is conducted using the validated models to investigate the effect of fiber material type, fiber volume fraction, and concrete compressive strength on the performance of concrete beams.

  • Debris flow is a composition of solid objects of various sizes, suspension and water, which occurs frequently as the results of landslide following heavy rainfall. This often causes extensive damage in the form of socio-economic losses and casualties as witnessed during the incident around Mt. Umyeon, Seoul in 2011. There have been numerous investigation to mitigate the impacts from debris flow; however, the estimation as preparedness measure has not been successful due to nonlinear and multiphase characteristics of phenomena both in material and process inherent in the debris flow. This study presents a numerical approach to simulate the debris flow using open source code of computational fluid dynamics, OpenFOAM with non-Newtonian viscosity model for three phase material modeling. In order to validate the proposed numerical method, the quantitative evaluations were made by comparisons with experimental results and qualitative analysis for the dispersion characteristics was carried for the case of debris flow in the actual incident from Mt. Umyeon.
