The stability of engineered barriers in high-level radioactive waste disposal systems can be influenced by the decay heat generated by the waste. This study focuses on the thermal analysis of various canister designs to effectively lower the maximum temperature of the engineered barrier. A numerical model was developed and employed to investigate the heat dissipation potential of copper rings placed across the buffer. Various canister designs incorporating copper rings were presented, and numerical analysis was performed to identify the design with the most significant temperature reduction effect. The results confirmed that the temperature of the buffer material was effectively lowered with an increase in the number of copper rings penetrating the buffer. Parametric studies were also conducted to analyze the impact of technical gaps, copper thickness, and collar height on the temperature reduction. The numerical model revealed that the presence of gaps between the components of the engineered barrier significantly increased the buffer temperature. Furthermore, the reduction in buffer temperature varied depending on the location of the gap and collar. The methods proposed in this study for reducing the buffer temperature hold promise for contributing to cost reduction in radioactive waste disposal.

Flame propagation velocity is the one of the main mechanism of the stabilization of triple flame. To quantity the triple flame propagation velocity, Bilger presents the triple flame propagation velocity, depending on the mixture fraction gradient, based on the laminar jet flow theory. However, in spite of these many analyses, there has not been any attempt to quantify the triple flame propagation velocity with the flame radius of curvature and scalar dissipation rate. In the present research, there was discussion about the radius of flame curvature and scalar dissipation rate, through the numerical study. As a result, we have known that the flame propagation velocity was linear with the nozzle exit velocity and scalar dissipation rate decreases nonlinearly with the flame propagation velocity and radius of curvature of flame increases linearly. Also radius of curvature of flame decreases non-linearly with the scalar dissipation rate. Therefore, we ascertained that there was corelation among the scalar dissipation rate, radius of flame curvature and flame propagation velocity.

Abrupt and gradual levee breach analyses on the flat domain were implemented by laboratory experiments and numerical simulations. To avoid the reflective wave from the side wall the experiment was performed in a large domain surrounded by waterway. A numerical model was developed for solving the two-dimensional gradual levee breach flow. The results of the numerical simulation developed in this study showed good agreement with those of the experimental data. However, even if the numerical schemes effectively replicated the trends of the observed water depth for the first shock, there were little differences for the second shock. In addition, even though the model considered the Smagorinsky horizontal eddy viscosity, the location and height of the hydraulic jump in the numerical simulation were not fairly well agree with experimental measurements. This shows the shallow water equation solver has a limitation which does not exactly reproduce the energy dissipation from the hydraulic jump. Further study might be required, considering the energy dissipation due to the hydraulic jump or transition flow from reflective wave.

Turbulent flow around a rotating circular cylinder is investigated by Direct Numerical Simulation. The calculation is performed at three cases of low Reynolds number, Re=161, 348 and 623, based on the cylinder radius and friction velocity. Statistically strong similarities with fully developed channel flow are observed. Instantaneous flow visualization reveals that the turbulence length scale typically decreases as Reynolds number increases. Some insight into the spacial characteristics in conjunction with wave number is provided by wavelet analysis. The budget of dissipation rate as well as turbulent kinetic energy is computed and particular attention is given to the comparison with plane channel flow.

Shape memory alloys (SMA) can dissipate energy through hysteresis cycles without significant residual deformation. This paper describes the fabrication and testing of copper-based SMA hourglass-shaped plates for use in energy dissipation devices and the development of a numerical model to reproduce the experiments. The plates were tested under cyclic flexural deformations, showing stable hysteresis cycles without strength degradation. A detailed nonlinear numerical model was developed and validated with the experimental data, using as input the constitutive relationship for the material determined from cyclic tests of material coupons under tension loading. The model adequately reproduces the experimental results. The study is focused on the exploitation of SMA in the martensite phase.

Damped outrigger systems have been proposed as a novel energy dissipation system to protect tall buildings from severe earthquakes and strong wind loads. In this study, semi-active damping devices such as magnetorheological (MR) dampers instead of passive dampers are installed vertically between the outrigger and perimeter columns to achieve large and adaptable energy dissipation. Control performance of semi-active outrigger damper system mainly depends on the control algorithm. Fuzzy logic control algorithm was used to generate command voltage sent to MR damper. Genetic algorithm was used to optimize the fuzzy logic controller. An artificial earthquake load was generated for numerical simulation. A simplified numerical model of damped outrigger system was developed. Based on numerical analyses, it has been shown that the semi-active damped outrigger system can effectively reduce both displacement and acceleration responses of the tall building in comparison with a passive outrigger damper system.
Compressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in two dimension is studied through high-resolution, numerical simulations with the isothermal equation of state. First, hydrodynamic turbulence with Mach number $(M)_{rms}\;\~$1 is generated by enforcing a random force. Next, initial, uniform magnetic field of various strengths with Alfvenic Mach number Ma $\gg$ 1 is added. Then, the simulations are followed until MHD turbulence is fully developed. Such turbulence is expected to exist in a variety of astrophysical environments including clusters of galaxies. Although no dissipation is included explicitly in our simulations, truncation errors produce dissipation which induces numerical resistivity. It mimics a hyper-resistivity in our second-order accurate code. After saturation, the resulting flows are categorized as SF (strong field), WF (weak field), and VWF (very weak field) classes respectively, depending on the average magnetic field strength described with Alfvenic Mach number, $(Ma)_{rms}{\ge}1$, $(Ma)_{rms}{\~}1$, and $(Ma)_{rms}{\gg}1$. The characteristics of each class are discussed.
Soil disturbance induced by installation of mandrel driven vertical drains decreases the in situ horizontal hydraulic conductivity of the soil in the vicinity of the drains, decelerating the consolidation rate. According to available literature, several different profiles for the hydraulic conductivity variation with the radial distance from the vertical drain, influencing the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate, have been identified. In addition, it is well known that the visco-plastic properties of the soil also influence the excess pore water pressure dissipation rate and consequently the settlement rate. In this study, a numerical solution adopting an elastic visco-plastic model with nonlinear creep function incorporated in the consolidation equations has been developed to investigate the effects of disturbed zone properties on the time dependent behaviour of soft soil deposits improved with vertical drains and preloading. The employed elastic visco-plastic model is based on the framework of the modified Cam-Clay model capturing soil creep during excess pore water pressure dissipation. Besides, nonlinear variations of creep coefficient with stress and time and permeability variations during the consolidation process are considered. The predicted results have been compared with V$\ddot{a}$sby test fill measurements. According to the results, different variations of the hydraulic conductivity profile in the disturbed zone result in varying excess pore water pressure dissipation rate and consequently varying the effective vertical stresses in the soil profile. Thus, the creep coefficient and the creep strain limit are notably influenced resulting in significant changes in the predicted settlement rate.
The self-centering capacity and energy dissipation performance have been recognized critically for increasing the seismic performance of structures. This paper presents an innovative steel moment frame with self-centering steel reinforced concrete (SRC) wall panel incorporating replaceable energy dissipation devices (SF-SCWD). The self-centering mechanism and energy dissipation mechanism of the structure were validated by cyclic tests. The earthquake resilience of wall panel has the ability to limit structural damage and residual drift, while the energy dissipation devices located at wall toes are used to dissipate energy and reduce the seismic response. The oriented post-tensioned strands provide additional overturning force resistance and help to reduce residual drift. The main parameters were studied by numerical analysis to understand the complex structural behavior of this new system, such as initial stress of post-tensioning strands, yield strength of damper plates and height-width ratio of the wall panel. The static push-over analysis was conducted to investigate the failure process of the SF-SCWD. Moreover, nonlinear time history analysis of the 6-story frame was carried out, which confirmed the availability of the proposed structures in permanent drift mitigation.

The article is concerned with a mathematical modeling which can improve performances of PDE-based restoration models. Most PDE-based restoration models tend to lose fine structures due to certain degrees of nonphysical dissipation. Sources of such an undesirable dissipation are analyzed for total variation-based restoration models. Based on the analysis, the so-called equalized net diffusion (END) modeling is suggested in order for PDE-based restoration models to significantly reduce nonphysical dissipation. It has been numerically verified that the END-incorporated models can preserve and recover fine structures satisfactorily, outperforming the basic models for both quality and efficiency. Various numerical examples are shown to demonstrate effectiveness of the END modeling.
