  • DDARF (Discontinuous Deformation Analysis for Rock Failure) is a numerical algorithm for simulating jointed rock masses' discontinuous deformation. While its reinforcement simulation is only limited to end-anchorage bolt, which is assumed to be a linear spring simply. Here, several new reinforcement modes in DDARF are proposed, including lining reinforcement, full-length anchorage bolt and equivalent reinforcement. In the numerical simulation, lining part is assigned higher mechanical strength than surrounding rock masses, it may include multiple virtual joints or not, depending on projects. There must be no embedding or stretching between lining blocks and surrounding blocks. To realize simulation of the full-length anchorage bolt, at every discontinuity passed through the bolt, a set of normal and tangential spring needs to be added along the bolt's axial and tangential direction. Thus, bolt's axial force, shearing force and full-length anchorage effect are all realized synchronously. And, failure criterions of anchorage effect are established for different failure modes. In the meantime, from the perspective of improving surrounding rock masses' overall strength, a new equivalent and tentative simulation method is proposed, it can save calculation storage and improve efficiency. Along the text, simulation algorithms and applications of these new reinforcement modes in DDARF are given.

  • In this paper, a vibration-based method using the change ratios of modal data and the experience-based learning algorithm is presented for quantifying the position, size, and interface layer of delamination in laminated composites. Three types of objective functions are examined and compared, including the ones using frequency changes only, mode shape changes only, and their combination. A fine three-dimensional FE model with constraint equations is utilized to extract modal data. A series of numerical experiments is carried out on an eight-layer quasi-isotropic symmetric (0/-45/45/90)s composited beam for investigating the influence of the objective function, the number of modal data, the noise level, and the optimization algorithms. Numerical results confirm that the frequency-and-mode-shape-changes-based technique yields excellent results in all the three delamination variables of the composites and the addition of mode shape information greatly improves the accuracy of interface layer prediction. Moreover, the EBL outperforms the other three state-of-the-art optimization algorithms for vibration-based delamination detection of composites. A laboratory test on six CFRP beams validates the frequency-and-mode-shape-changes-based technique and confirms again its superiority for delamination detection of composites.

  • It is main objective of this approach to present a method to analyse stochastic design sensitivity for problems of structural dynamics with randomness in design parameters. A combination of the adjoint variable approach and the second order perturbation method is used in the finite element approach. An alternative form of the constant functional that holds for all times is introduced to consider the time response of dynamic sensitivity. The terminal problem of the adjoint system is solved using equivalent homogeneous equations excited by initial velocities. The numerical procedures are shown to be much more efficient when based on the fold superposition method: the generalized co-ordinates are normalized and the correlated random variables are transformed to uncorrelated variables, whereas the secularities are eliminated by the fast Fourier transform of complex valued sequences. Numerical algorithms have been worked out and proved to be accurate and efficient : they can be readily adapted to fit into the existing finite element codes whose element derivative matrices can be explicitly generated. The numerical results of two cases -2 dimensional portal frame for the comparison with reference and 3-dimensional frame structure - for the deterministic sensitivity analysis are presented.

  • This study is concerned with the critical evaluation of predicative capability of a k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model using the Renormalization Group(RNG) theory. The present numerical model for solution of the Navier-Stokes System is based on the modified PISO algorithms. Computations have been performed with the RNG-based K-$\varepsilon$ model for the two-dimensional flow over a backward-facing step, a confined coaxial jet, and a swirling flow in a swirl combustor. Numerical results are compared with experimental data in terms of mean flow velocities, turbulent kinetic energy, and turbulent stresses. Numerical results clearly indicate that the RNG-based K-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model shows a significant improvement over a standard K-$\varepsilon$ model in predicting the turbulent flows with flow separation and swirl.

  • Three-dimensional flow analysis and numerical optimization methods are presented for the design of an axial-flow fan. Steady, incompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard k- ${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governing equations are discretized using finite volume method. Steepest descent method, conjugate gradient method and BFGS method are compared to determine the searching directions. Golden section method and quadratic fit-sectioning method are tested for one dimensional search. Objective function is defined as a ratio of generation rate of the turbulent kinetic energy to pressure head. Two variables concerning sweep angle distribution are selected as the design variables. Performance of the final fan designed by the optimization was tested experimentally.

  • A numerical model for masonry is proposed by following an internal variable approach originally developed in the field of elastic-plastic analysis. The general features of the theoretical framework are discussed by focussing on finite element models applicable to incremental elastic-plastic problems. An extremum property is derived and its implications in terms of convergence for convenient algorithms are briefly discussed, by including the case of softening materials and damage effects. Next, a numerical model is presented, which is suitable for masonry, can be developed according to the same internal variable formulation and enjoys similar properties. Some numerical results are presented and compared with the response of a masonry shear wall subjected to pseudodynamic tests.

  • Various control algorithms have been proposed for the speed-sensorless control for an induction motor. These control schemes are mainly based on the speed feedback with the flux and speed estimations. This paper proposes another method for the speed-sensorless control for an induction motor. The proposed scheme is based on the torque and flux compensation without speed estimations, in which the same controlled stator voltage is applied to both the induction motor and the numerical model so that the differences between torques and fluxes of the model and the induction motor may be compelled to give access to zero. The results of experiment show the effectiveness of the scheme.

  • This paper presents a new numerical algorithm for the fault location estimation and arcing fault detection when a single-phase arcing ground fault occurs on a transmission line. The proposed algorithm derived in the spectrum domain is based on the synchronized voltage and current samples measured from the PMUs(Phasor Measurement Units) installed at both ends of the transmission lines. In this paper, the algorithm uses DFT(Discrete Fourier Transform) for estimation. The algorithm uses a short data window for real-time transmission line protection. Also, from the calculated arc voltage amplitude, a decision can be made whether the fault is permanent or transient. The proposed algorithm is tested through computer simulation to show its effectiveness.

  • The numerical analyses of the complicated flows are widely attempted in these days. Because of the enormous demanding memory and calculation time, parallel processing is used for these problems. In order to obtain calculation efficiency, it is important to choose proper domain decomposition technique and numerical algorithm. In this research we enhanced the efficiency of the CFDS code developed by ADD, using parallel computation and newly developed numerical algorithms. For the huge amount of data transfer between blocks non-blocking method is used, and newly developed data transfer algorithm is used for non-aligned block interface. Recently developed RoeM scheme is adpoted as a spatial difference method, and AF-ADI and LU-SGS methods are used as a time integration method to enhance the convergence of the code. Analyses of the flows around the ONERA M6 wing and the high angle of attack missile configuration are performed to show the efficiency improvement.

  • Damped outrigger systems have been proposed as a novel energy dissipation system to protect tall buildings from severe earthquakes and strong wind loads. In this study, semi-active damping devices such as magnetorheological (MR) dampers instead of passive dampers are installed vertically between the outrigger and perimeter columns to achieve large and adaptable energy dissipation. Control performance of semi-active outrigger damper system mainly depends on the control algorithm. Fuzzy logic control algorithm was used to generate command voltage sent to MR damper. Genetic algorithm was used to optimize the fuzzy logic controller. An artificial earthquake load was generated for numerical simulation. A simplified numerical model of damped outrigger system was developed. Based on numerical analyses, it has been shown that the semi-active damped outrigger system can effectively reduce both displacement and acceleration responses of the tall building in comparison with a passive outrigger damper system.
