Representation of Wavelet Transform using a Matrix Form and Its Implementation

  • Three representations are known to implement the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) ; i.e., direct, lifting and matrix forms. In these representations, direct and lifting forms are well known so far. This paper derives the matrix form of the DWT from the direct form. Then, we implement these three representations on a programmable digital signal processor (in the following, DSP processor) and compare them in terms of the number of calculations and instruction cycles. As a result, we confirm that the lifting form has the lowest number of calculations and cycles, and the matrix form has an effective decrease in the number of cycles than other representations on the DSP processor.

  • Evolutionary operation (EVOP) proposed by Box (1957) is a method for continuous monitoring and improvement of a full-scale manufacturing process with the objective of moving the operating conditions toward the better ones. EVOP consists of systematically making small changes in the levels of the two or three process variables under consideration. Data are collected on the response variable at each point of two level factorial design with the center point and a cycle is said to have been completed. The cycles are replicated sequentially until the decision is made on whether further cycle of experiments is needed to conclude the significance of any of main effects or interaction effects or the curvature. In this paper, an improved flow chart of EVOP is proposed and how to determine the number of cycles is studied based on the size of type II error. In order to reject the alternative hypothesis of interests with more confidence and conclude that we believe in the null hypothesis of no effects, we propose a counter measure $p^*-value$ corresponding to the p-value. The relationship of $p^*-value$ to the probability of type II error ${\beta}$ under the alternative hypothesis of interests is analogous to that of p-value to the probability of type I error ${\alpha}$. Also the implementation of EVOP with a mixture experiment is discussed.

  • The influence of transformation cycles (${\alpha}^{\prime}{\leftrightarrow}{\gamma}^{\prime}$) on the microstructure and mechanical properties of lath and lenticular martensites has been studied in Fe-Ni alloys. The width of lath in Fe-15%Ni alloy decreased with increasing the number of transformation cycles, while no appreciable change in dislocation density inside the lath was observed. In case of Fe-31%Ni alloy, a number of dislocations were additionally introduced into the martensite plate after the transformation cycling. Tensile strength and Vickers hardness of lath martensite decreased with the increase in number of transformation cycles, whereas those of lenticular martensite increased up to 1 cycle and then remained constant. Elongation of two alloys was deteriorated after 1 transformation cycling, corresponding to the tensile strength. But the decrement of elongation in Fe-31%Ni alloy was smaller than that in Fe-15%Ni alloy.

Hydrogen Storage Properties of Hydriding-Dehydriding Cycled Magnesium-Nickel-Iron Oxide Alloy

  • By measuring the absorbed hydrogen quantity as a function of the number of cycles, the cycling properties of the Mg-15 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ alloy were investigated. The absorbed hydrogen quantity decreased as the number of cycles increased. The $H_a$ value varied almost linearly with the number of cycles. The maintainability of absorbed hydrogen quantity at n=100 was 89.0% for the hydriding reaction time of 10 min. After the $150^{th}$ hydriding-dehydriding cycle, Mg, $Mg_2Ni$, $Mg(OH)_2$, MgO, and Fe were observed. The phases were analyzed by Rietveld analysis from the XRD patterns of the Mg-15 wt%Ni-5 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ alloy after 150 hydriding-dehydriding cycles. The crystallite size and strain of Mg were then estimated with the Williamson-Hall technique.

다축대각단조(MADF) 가공횟수에 따른 AA1100의 미세조직 변화 (Microstructural Changes of AA1100 According to the Processing Number of Multi-Axial Diagonal Forging (MADF))

  • This study investigates the effects of multi-axial diagonal forging (MADF) processing number on the microstructures of AA1100 fabricated using MADF processes. The cast AA1100 was annealed at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3hrs in $N_2$ atmosphere and cut into $25mm^3$ cubes for the MADF processes. The MADF process consist of plane forging with a thickness reduction of 30% and a diagonal forging with a diagonal forging angle of 135 degrees. In order to analyze the microstructural variations based on the number of repetitions, 1, 2, 3 and 4 cycles of the MADF process were performed. AA1100 specimens were successfully deformed without cracking of the surface for up to 4 cycles of MADF. The grain size, average misorientation and average grain orientation spread (GOS) of MADF processed materials were analyzed using EBSD technique. The results showed that MADF process effectively refined the microstructure of AA1100 with an initial average grain size of $337.4{\mu}m$. The average grain sizes of specimens which were MADF processed for 2, 3, 4 cycles were refined to be $1.9{\mu}m$, $1.6{\mu}m$, $1.4{\mu}m$, respectively. The grain refinement appeared saturated when AA1100 got MADF processed over 2 cycles. When the specimen was subjected to two or more cycles of MADF, the degree of decrease in the average grain size drastically decreased with an increase in the number of cycle due to the softening phenomena such as dynamic recovery or dynamic recrystallization during processing.

  • The ARB (Accumulative Rolling Bonding) Process was applied to a 6061 Al alloy to obtain ultra-fine grains. After 4 ARB cycles at $315^{\circ}C$, original equilibrium large grains were transformed to ultra-fine grains of several hundred nano-meter size with nonequilibrium grain boundaries. At lower number of cycles, microsutcture of highly-tangled dislocation cells were observed. Large grains and coarsened precipitates filled the microstructure of specimens experienced ARB cycles more than 5. Sliding wear tests using a pin-on-disk type wear tester were conducted on the ARB processed 6061 Al alloy plate. Wear rates of the 6061 Al alloy increased with the increase of ARB cycle number as well as the applied load. Worn surfaces and debris, cross-sections of the worn specimen were examined with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate the wear mechanism of the ultra-fine grained 6061 Al Tensile properties of the 6061 Al alloy were also studied and used to correlate the wear test results with the microstructures, which evolved continuously with the number of ARB cycles.

Efficacy of Different Number of XELOX or SOX Chemotherapy Cycles After D2 Resection for Stage III Gastric Cancer

  • Purpose: We aimed to explore whether the prognosis of patients treated with capecitabine and oxaliplatin (XELOX) or S-1 and oxaliplatin (SOX) regimens who received fewer cycles of chemotherapy after D2 radical resection for gastric cancer (GC) would be non-inferior to that of patients who received the standard number of cycles of chemotherapy. Materials and Methods: Data on patients who received XELOX or SOX chemotherapy after undergoing D2 radical resection at Harbin Medical University Cancer Hospital between January 2011 and May 2016 were collected. Results: In patients who received 4, 6, and 8 cycles of chemotherapy, the 5-year overall survival (OS) rates were 59.4%, 64.8%, and 62.7%, respectively. Compared to patients who received 4 cycles of chemotherapy, those who received 6 cycles (hazard ratio [HR], 0.882; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.599-1.299; P=0.52) or 8 cycles (HR, 0.882; 95% CI, 0.533-1.458; P=0.62) of chemotherapy did not exhibit significantly prolonged OS. The 3-year disease-free survival (DFS) rate of patients who received 4, 6, and 8 cycles of chemotherapy was 62.1%, 67.2%, and 60.8%, respectively. Compared to patients who received 4 cycles of chemotherapy, those who received 6 cycles (HR, 0.835; 95% CI, 0.572-1.221; P=0.35) or 8 cycles (HR, 0.972; 95% CI, 0.606-1.558; P=0.91) of chemotherapy did not show significantly prolonged DFS. However, the 3-year DFS and 5-year OS rates of patients who received 6 cycles of chemotherapy appeared to be superior to those of patients who received 4 and 8 cycles of chemotherapy. Conclusions: For patients with stage III GC, 4 to 6 cycles of XELOX or SOX chemotherapy may be a favorable option. This study provides a rationale for further randomized clinical trials.

Impact of Adjuvant Chemotherapy Cycles on Prognosis of Resectable Stomach Cancer: A Retrospective Analysis

  • Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of adjuvant chemotherapy cycles on the prognosis of patients with post-operative stomach cancer through retrospective analysis. Methods: A total of 128 patients with gastric cancer who underwent gastrectomy, followed by adjuvant chemotherapy consisting of epirubicin, cisplatin or oxaliplatin, leucovorin, and 5-fluorouracil, according to a defined schedule, were divided into three groups according to the number of chemotherapy cycles: Group I (<6 cycles); Group II (6 cycles); and Group III (>6 cycles). Results: The 5-year overall survival (OS) was 20.8% in Group I, 45.0% in Group II, and 42.9% in Group III, with a median follow-up of 43 months. The 5-year relapse-free survival (RFS) was 15.1% in Group I, 40% in Group II, and 40% in Group III. The OS and RFS in Groups II and III were significantly better than in Group I (OS, p = 0.002 and p=0.003; RFS, P<0.001 and P=0.002). There was no difference in OS (p = 0.970) or in RFS (p = 0.722) between Groups II and III. Multivariate Cox hazard analysis determined that the number of adjuvant chemotherapy cycles was an independent factor that influenced OS and RFS. Conclusion: Six cycles of adjuvant chemotherapy gave encouraging outcomes in patients with resectable gastric cancer. Further prospective randomized controlled investigations are warranted in a multi-center setting.

3D 프린팅 레진과 임시 수복용 레진의 열순환 처리 후 전단결합강도에 관한 연구 (A study on the shear bond strength between 3D printed resin and provisional resin after thermal cycling)

  • 목적: 본 연구에서는 3D 프린팅 레진과 임시 수복용 레진의 열순환 처리에 따른 전단결합강도의 변화를 연구하고자 하였다. 연구 재료 및 방법: DLP 방식을 이용하여 3D 프린팅 레진으로 표본을 제작하였다. 표본은 상부에 부착한 임시 수복용 레진(PMMA, bis-acryl resin) 및 열순환 처리 횟수(대조군, 2,000, 3,000, 5,000회)에 따라 8개의 군으로 분류하였다. 만능 재료시험기 상에서 결합된 표본들의 전단결합강도를 측정하였다. 결과: 열순환 처리의 횟수가 증가함에 따라 3D 프린팅 레진에 대한 PMMA와 bis-acryl resin의 전단결합강도는 PMMA에서 3,000회와 5,000회 간을 제외하고 모두 감소하였다. PMMA 그룹에서는 3,000회 미만의 열순환 처리 횟수 간에서 유의한 전단결합강도의 차이를 보였으며(P < 0.05), 3,000회 이상의 열순환 처리 횟수 간에는 유의한 차이를 보이지 않았다(P > 0.05). Bis-acryl resin 그룹에서는 대조군과 2,000회 간, 대조군과 3,000회 간, 대조군과 5,000회 간의 열순환 처리에는 유의한 전단결합강도의 차이가 있었으며(P < 0.05), 2,000회와 3,000회 간, 3,000회와 5,000회 간에는 유의한 차이가 없었다(P > 0.05). 결론: 3D 프린팅 레진에 대한 임시 수복용 레진의 전단결합강도는 열순환 처리를 한 경우 결합강도가 낮아지는 경향을 보였다.

Active Days around Solar Minimum and Solar Cycle Parameter

  • Utilizing a new version of the sunspot number and group sunspot number dataset available since 2015, we have statistically studied the relationship between solar activity parameters describing solar cycles and the slope of the linear relationship between the monthly sunspot numbers and the monthly number of active days in percentage (AD). As an effort of evaluating possibilities in use of the number of active days to predict solar activity, it is worthwhile to revisit and extend the analysis performed earlier. In calculating the Pearson's linear correlation coefficient r, the Spearman's rank-order correlation coefficient rs, and the Kendall's τ coefficient with the rejection probability, we have calculated the slope for a given solar cycle in three different ways, namely, by counting the spotless day that occurred during the ascending phase and the descending phase of the solar cycle separately, and during the period corresponding to solar minimum ± 2 years as well. We have found that the maximum solar sunspot number of a given solar cycle and the duration of the ascending phase are hardly correlated with the slope of a linear function of the monthly sunspot numbers and AD. On the other hand, the duration of a solar cycle is found to be marginally correlated with the slope with the rejection probabilities less than a couple of percent. We have also attempted to compare the relation of the monthly sunspot numbers with AD for the even and odd solar cycles. It is inconclusive, however, that the slopes of the linear relationship between the monthly group numbers and AD are subject to the even and odd solar cycles.
