  • This paper classified the articles of special needs dentistry(SND) published in Korean medical database according to thematic distribution and chronological change to assess recent academic trends and indicate the direction of study in the future. We selected articles in 17 dental journals registered with the Korea Research Foundation This study found that the total number of articles of SND was 292 in 17 journals from 1973 to 2012. The biggest number of articles of SND was published in the journal of the Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, which means pediatric dentists contribute to dental treatment of people who need special care. According to growing number of people with disabilities, the number of articles related in SND has been increased since 2000. Also, the aged and children as well as people with disabilities fit into the category of SND and the scope of SND has been enlarged. So dentists should concern and study more about SND in the future.

  • Purpose: The aim was to verify if changing the Journal of Gastric Cancer (JGC) to only English (starting in December 2010) was successful based on bibliometrics. Materials and Methods: The following indicators were retrieved or calculated from the journal homepage and the Web of Science Core Collection on January 30, 2016: the number of citable articles per year; the number of original articles funded; the national origins of the editorial board members and authors; the total citations; the impact factors; the national origins of authors citing the journal; the source titles of articles citing the journal; and the Hirsch index. Results: From 2011 to 2015, the number of citable articles per year was 40, 41, 39, 39, and 40. The proportion of original articles funded was 39 out of 113 articles (34.5%). The editorial board members were from seven countries. The authors were from 11 countries. The total citations increased from 1 in 2011 to 245 in 2015. From 2013 to 2015, the impact factors (without self-citations) were 1.42, 1.36, and 1.60. In 2014, the value 1.60 corresponded to the ranking of 157 out of 210 oncology journals (74.8%); It was cited from 46 countries. Top-ranking countries of citing authors were China (171), Korea (158), and Japan (75). The number of source titles citing the journal was more than 100. The Hirsch index was 12. Conclusions: The English-only language policy, which started in December 2010, was successful in promoting the JGC to international levels from the perspective of bibliometric analysis.

  • Since the authors participated in the editorial committee in October 2001, many dramatic changes have been introduced to the Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society[JKNS]. The format, the external appearance, the editorial system, and the reviewing process have been transformed with new standpoints to enhance the quality and to raise the level of JKNS. The authors reviewed papers published on JKNS in 2006 with special interest on the changes of JKNS during last five years. In total, 186 articles were published on JKNS in 2006. Because the editorial committee asked two review articles to renowned neurosurgeons, there were 184 peer-reviewed articles. Eighty seven clinical articles, eighty one case reports, seven laboratory investigations, four special articles and five technical reports were published. This distribution changed from the previous year with marginal value of statistical significance [p=0.101]. The ratio of the original articles [laboratory investigations and clinical articles] decreased to 51.1% from 57.5% of 2005 but the difference was not statistically significant [p=0.222]. The number of laboratory investigations significantly decreased to 7 [3.8%] from 19 [10.4%] of 2005 [p=0.014]. Other changes such as number of authors per article, number of institutes which published papers on JKNS have been examined to assess the trend and/or change in characteristics of papers published on JKNS.

Results : Out of a total of 195 original articles, 18 articles used descriptive statistics only and 177 articles used inferential statistics. 142 articles used 12 types of statistical packages. SPSS was used most at 97 times(63.4%). The number of descriptive statistical methods used was a total of 417 and among them 193 were presented as tables(46.3%) and 224 were presented as graphs(53.7%). The number of inferential statistics applied was a total of 256 and analysis of variance was used most at 90 times(35.2%). The number of parametric statistical methods used was a total of 170(75.6%) and that of nonparametric statistical methods used was a total of 55(24.4%). Analysis of variance and two sample t-test were most employed in both clinical and non-clinical research. The number of multiple comparison methods applied was a total of 67 and the number of Scheffe methods among them was most at 26 times(37.7%). Conclusions : In the present study, statistical methods used in the journal over the last six years were examined. • Background: There haven't been any papers that have analyzed the recent trends in the changing attitudes and results of Korean thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons who submit scientific papers to the major cardiothoracic journals. Material and Method: I analyzed the original articles that were published in the major cardiothoracic surgery journals from 1995 to 2008 by Korean thoracic and cardiovascular surgeons. The data was retrieved from the internet websites of Pubmed, three major international SCI (Science Citation Index) journals and the Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery. I then analyzed the data according to the chronological year, the subjects and the subspecialties. Result: The total number of original articles in the three international journals was 14,629. Among them, the number of articles written by Korean scientists was 157 (1.07%). A sharp increase was identified from 28 articles out of 7,674 articles (0.36%) prior to 2002, to 129 articles out of 6,955 articles (1.83%) after 2003. On the other hand, the annual number of articles in the Korean Journal was markedly decreased from 126.8 articles by 1999 to 80.0 articles after 2000. The annual number of articles in the Korean Journal was also decreased from 58.8% by 1999 to 48.3% after 2000. Conclusion: There was an observed increase in submitting articles to the international SCI journals after 2000 rather than to the Korean journal. The proportion of original articles in the Korean journal is also decreasing. I think we need to pay special attention to improve the quality and quantity of articles published in the Korean journal.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how Korea's national image is being established through content analysis of articles related to Korea by the People's Daily in China. There were 253 articles related to Korea published in the People's Daily from 2016 to 2020. Using content analysis methods, articles related to Korea were reviewed in five categories: number of articles, page, source, subject matter, and propensity to report. According to the results of the study, the number of articles related to Korea in the People's Daily has decreased since 2016, and the topic of articles has been in many political and social sectors. In 2016 and 2017, South Korea's decision to deploy THAAD led to a number of articles published in the military sector, and there were negative articles only in military articles. The majority of articles related to Korea in the People's Daily show that it describes Korea positively or objectively. In this regard, the People's Daily shows that it is building a positive image of Korea.

  • The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic continuously influences on the health and well-being of people and communities worldwide. The purpose of this study was to explore the published research articles in the fields of nursing and health during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research design is an exploratory study. Samples are the abstracts of the articles from a literature database, PubMed, that were published from January 1st, 2020 to April 15th, 2021. We used a MeSH term, 'nursing' and "COVID-19" to retrieve articles that are related to COVID-19. Five hundred and fifty-five articles were retrieved. Two hundred and sixteen articles were excluded as they were not met the inclusion criteria. The total number of articles used in this study was three hundred and thirty-nine. The average number of articles published during the data collection period was 21.9. Seven topics were discovered from the abstracts of the articles: COVID-19 management and guidance; Perinatal COVID-19 and breastfeeding; Nurse; Health service and support; Patient care; Research; and Education and experience. This study revealed some interesting topics from the articles related to COVID-19 and provided some sense of research areas that may be interesting and allow us to develop important research questions about nursing science and nursing practice.
