  • For the measurement of mass flow rate at a wide range of operation conditions, it is required that the critical nozzle gas different diameters, since the mass flow rate through the critical nozzle depends on the nozzle supply conditions and the nozzle throat diameter. In the present study, both computational and experimental investigations are performed to explore the variable critical nozzle. Computational work using the 2-dimensional, axisymmetric, compressible Navier-Stokes equations are carried out to simulate the gas flow through variable critical nozzle. In experimnet, a cylinder with several different diameters is inserted into the critical nozzle to vary the nozzle throat diameter. Computational results are compared with the experimented ones. The computed results are in close agreement with experiment. It is found that the displacement and momentum thickness of variable critical nozzle are given as a function of Reynolds numbers. The discharge coefficient of the variable critical nozzle is predicted using an empirical equation.

  • In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it is widely studied to get the high performance and durability. However, the nozzles to inject the urea-water solution into the exhaust pipe occur some problems, including the nozzle clogging, deposition of urea-water solution on the inner wall of the exhaust pipe, resulting in the production of urea salt. In this study, a swirl-type twin-fluid nozzle to produce more fine droplets was used as a method to solve the problems. The effect of the nozzle cap geometry, including the length to diameter ratio ($l_o/d_o$) and chamfer, on the spray characteristics were investigated experimentally. The length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were varied from 0.25 to 1.125. The chamfer angle of the nozzle cap was constant at 90o. The mean velocity and droplet size distributions of the spray were measured using a 2-D PDA (phase Doppler analyzer) system, and the spray half-width, AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were analyzed. At result, The larger length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were more small SMD and AMD. The effect of the chamfer did increase the radial velocity, while it did not affect the atomization effect.

  • The prediction of the critical Reynolds number in the stability curie of liquid jet was mainly analyzed by the empirical correlations and the experimental data through the literature. The factors affecting the critical Reynolds number include Ohnesorge number, nozzle length-diameter ratio, ambient pressure and nozzle inlet type. The nozzle inlet type was divided into two groups according to the dependence of the critical Reynolds number on the length-to-diameter ratio of nozzle. The empirical correlations for the critical Reynolds number as a function of above factors mentioned are newly proposed.

  • The characteristic of jet impinging on the concave surface were analyzed through thermographic phosphor thermometry (TPT) and numerical investigation. Under a jet Reynolds number of 6600, nozzle diameters and nozzle-to-surface distances (H/d) were changed 5mm and 10mm and H/d=2 and 5. The RNG k-ε turbulence model can accurately predict the distribution of Nusselt number, compared to other models (SST k-ω, realizable k-ε). Heat transfer characteristics varied with the nozzle diameter and H/d, with a secondary peak noted at H/d =2, due to vortex-induced flow detachment and reattachment. An increase in nozzle diameter enhanced jet momentum, turbulence strength, and heat transfer.

  • 1. This study was conducted to examine the effects of change of the short range nozzle hole on the travelling distance. The results of this study are summarized as follows; a) Effect of change of the cap hole diameter on the travelling distance of sprayed particles was generally a linear, the increasing rate was about 0.27. b) When the difference between the sectional area of cap hole and that of grooves of swirl plate, was small the travelling distance was decreased by the decreasing of spraying speed at cap hole. 2. This study was conducted to examine the effects of change of the short range nozzle hole on the size of spraying particles. The results of this study are summarized as follows; a) The diameter of sprayed particles on travelling distances in the short range nozzle did not coincide with the kinetic energy principle derived from the momentum and the resistance. b) The average diameter of sprayed particle between 1m and 3m in which amount of sprayed particle was particularly a great deal, was big, because that some of sprayed particles were absorbed each other on the way to fall c) Effect of increase of cap hole diameter was generally enlarged the average diameter of sprayed particle with small rate.

  • Droplet size is one of the important factors in the deposition and drift of agrichemical application. In this study, droplet size and its distribution of the three different sizes of ceramic hollow cone nozzles being used in the air carrier sprayer for apple production were investigated at the various nozzle pressures and the three air velocities. The Malvern particle size analyzer were used for the measurement of droplet size and its distribution. The important results emerged from th is study can be summarized as follows. 1. Discharged rate was increase with the increase of the nozzle diameter and pressure, amount of the difference was remarkable between the nozzle diameter of 1.0, 1.2 and 1.5 mm, but no difference were found between the diameter of 1.0 and 1.2 mm in the same nozzle pressure. 2. Mass median diameter were varied as 40~160 ${mu}m$ at the air velocity of 0 m/s, 70~140 ${mu}m$ of 15 m/s and 100~160 ${mu}m$ of 20 m/s 3. It appeared that the air velocity range of 15~20 m/s was desirable for both drift and deposition control in the given experimental conditions.

  • A single spray plume is the basic unit of the entire spray plume and is an important factor in understanding the spray characteristics. However, since the multi-hole GDI injector has a narrow spray angle, the superposition of the spray plumes occurs severely. Therefore, the spray uniformity and the spray atomization characteristics of a single spray plume were analyzed in this study using a single-hole GDI injector. Five single-hole GDI injectors with different nozzle hole diameters were used in the experiment. The uniformity of the spray was evaluated through the analysis of the spray pattern images. In addition, the atomization characteristics were compared using the diameter distribution of the spray droplets obtained using PDPA. As a result, the larger diameter of the nozzle hole, the less uniformity of the spray, and the injection pressure did not have a significant effect on the spray uniformity. It is judged that the surface roughness of the injector has a greater effect on spray uniformity than the diameter of the nozzle hole. Also, the size of the spray droplets increased sharply when the diameter of the nozzle hole was 230 ㎛.

  • The goal of this study is to show the way to decrease the noise from air nozzles. The variables of this test are the shapes of air nozzles, air flow rate and the distance between a reflection plate and a nozzle tip. This experiment is aimed to find the most appropriate condition to minimize the noise. These are the results. If diameter ratio is more than 12:8, noise level increases by over 10 dB(A) regradless of the distance between a reflection plate and a nozzle and the existence of a reflection plate. And when $L_2$ of a nozzle is 5mm long, noise level rise relatively highly. So, it is strongly recommended that $L_2$ should be manufactured more than 10mm. The reason for a high intensity noise is that when diameter ratio is more than 12:8, the diameter of a nozzle tip($D_2$) turns small drastically, which increases the air velocity. It is assumed that when the vortes is great around the spots where a nozzle hole is suddenly smaller, great turbulent flow increases much noise.

  • The atomizing characteristics in a spray injected from a twin fluid atomization nozzle have been investigated. The Sauter mean diameters as mean diameter are compared with wavelength calculated from the instability theory. The Sauter mean diameter are measured by the Fraunhofer diffraction theory using the Malvern particle sizer. The wavelength is calculated using the mean relative velocity instead of the exit relative velocity of nozzle. Also shadowgraphy technique is used to visualize atomization. This paper gives a possibility that the mean diameter can be predicted with the wavelength obtained by the simple instability theory.

  • Recently the critical nozzles with small diameter are being extensively used to measure mass flow in a variety of industrial fields and these have different configurations depending on operation condition and working gas. The curvature radius of the critical nozzle throat is one of the most important configuration factors promising a high reliability of the critical nozzle. In the present study, computations using the axisymmetric, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations are carried out to investigate the effect of the nozzle curvature on critical flows. The diameter of the critical nozzle employed is D=0.3mm and the radius of curvature of the critical nozzle throat is varied in the range from 1D to 3D. It is found that the discharge coefficient is very sensitive to the curvature radius(R) of critical nozzle, leading to the peak discharge coefficient at R = 2.0D and 2.5D, and that the critical pressure ratio increases with the curvature radius.
