Predicting US and Chinese consumers' purchase intention of Korean textiles and apparel related cultural products

  • This study aims to examine if a consumer's evaluations of and purchase intentions towards textiles and apparel-related cultural products are influenced by their culture, as indicated by their nationalities. Additionally, several psychological variables, such as novelty-seeking tendency, world-mindedness, and familiarity with Northeast Asian culture were included in the analyses to compare the relative importance of cultural influences with the importance of individual characteristics. To conduct a quantitative analysis, we collected data from 400 female consumers in two countries: 200 from the USA and 200 from China. Key findings showed that, nationality and novelty-seeking were found to have a strong influence on purchase intention when product evaluation variables were not included. Evaluation of appearance and Northeast Asian design emerged highly significant predictors of purchase intention for Korean cultural products, regardless of the product type. Cross cultural comparative research on cultural product evaluations is extremely rare. This study focused on groups of consumers residing in the US and China and asked them to evaluate a series of textiles and apparel-related cultural products produced in Korea.

Effects of Harm Avoidance Temperament and Novelty Seeking Temperament on School Adjustment in Middle School Students: Mediating Effects of Emotional Regulation (자극 추구 기질과 위험회피 기질이 중학생의 학교생활 적응에 미치는 영향 : 정서조절 능력의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • This study was conducted to explore the effects of novelty seeking temperament and harm avoidance temperament on school adjustment in middle school students and to investigate the mediating effects of emotional regulation on the relationship between temperament and school adjustment. A survey was conducted on a random sample of 672 middle school students. Data were analyzed using PASW ver. 18.0 and AMOS ver. 18.0 to carry out descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and the structural equation model. The main results of analysis could be summarized as follows. First, novelty seeking temperament and harm avoidance temperament had a negative influence upon school adjustment in middle school students. Second, emotional regulation had a positive influence upon school adjustment in middle school students. Third, temperament acted as a partial mediator for emotional regulation affecting school adjustment in middle school students. The study contributes to the literature by providing fundamental insights into school adjustment in middle school students.

The Role of Perceived Consumer Risk for Purchase and Non-Purchase in the Formation of Positive Impulsive Shopping Emotion (충동구매 시 긍정적 감정형성과정에서 구매위험지각과 비구매위험지각의 역할)

  • This study focuses on how positive emotions form when consumers impulsively purchase fashion products. Examined are the novelty seeking situations and the fashion knowledge of consumers as influential factors that affect positive impulsive shopping emotions along with the mediating role of the perceived risk of consumers for purchase and non-purchase. An online survey was conducted for the empirical research with a questionnaire about the fashion impulsive purchases of a product within the last 2 months. A total of 555 surveys were collected from impulsive female buyers and 404 complete responses were analyzed. The results find that the perceived risk is identified into purchase and non-purchase perspectives. Purchase perceived risk influenced negatively on positive emotions of impulsive purchase and non-purchase perceived risk positively. The perceived risk for non-purchase versus purchase increased by the more fashion knowledge consumers had and the more they shopped as novelty seeking. The results imply that non-purchase perceived risk importantly mediated between the influential factors and positive affect for impulsive purchase. Based on the findings, this study proposed some marketing suggestions and thoughts about effective purchase stimulation.

  • Recently, with coming of various channels, the public are communicating with unspecified massive consumers through personal broadcasting. It is becoming more popular as a positive response. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of characteristics of personal broadcasting contents on perceived value, perceived value on continuous use intention and the interaction effect of novelty seeking. As a result of verifying the effects of information quality, information trust, and entertainment on the perceived value, the characteristics of personal media contents all showed a significant positive effect and perceived value has a positive effect on continuous use intention. But The interaction effect of novelty seeking and perceived value is not significant. Therefore, content creators should make efforts to create content as much as to the trust of content as entertainment elements in content and composition. In the future, it will be meaningful to proceed with the research on the direct effects of the novelty trend and the various factors affecting viewers' characteristics using personal media contents.

Factors Influencing Drinking Problems in Female University Students (여대생의 음주문제 관련 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the factors influencing drinking problems in female university students to provide basic data for a nursing intervention program to improve health and prevent drinking problems. Method: Data were collected from September 17 to 21, 2007 through a questionnaire survey of 325 female college students in G City. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The most powerful predictor of drinking problems was refusal self efficacy. The combination of the influence of friends, perceived stress, personality of novelty seeking, and alcohol expectancy accounted for 23.7% of the variance in drinking problems. Conclusion: From the results, I recommend that refusal self efficacy, influence of friends, perceived stress, personality of novelty seeking, and alcohol expectancy should be contained in developing nursing intervention programs for preventing drinking problems in female university students.

Effect of Early Childhood Sensory Processing on Temperament and Character Traits (유아기 감각처리가 기질 및 성격 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to investigate the sensory processing factors that contribute to the temperament and character traits in early childhood. Methods : In this cross-sectional study, caregivers of typically developing children aged 3-6 years responded to the Sensory Profile and the Junior Temperament and Character Inventory. Multiple regression analysis was performed with temperament and character traits as criterion variables and sensory processing quadrants as predictive variables. Results : Sensory sensitivity significantly predicted novelty seeking and cooperativeness. The high frequency of sensory sensitivity behavior was related to high novelty seeking and low cooperativeness. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that sensory sensitivity contributes to the novelty seeking temperament and cooperativeness character in early childhood.

Effect of Sensory Processing Patterns on Temperament and Character Traits in Undergraduate Students (대학생의 기질 및 성격발달에 감각처리가 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : We investigated how sensory processing patterns contribute to temperament and character traits in undergraduate students. Methods : A total of 107 undergraduate students were recruited in September 2022 via convenient sampling method. They completed the Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile and the Temperament and Character Inventory. Multiple regression models were applied to analyze the effect of sensory processing quadrants (low registration, sensation seeking, sensory sensitivity, sensation avoiding) on each temperament (novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, persistence) and character (self-directedness, cooperativeness, self-transcendence) traits. Results : Sensation seeking significantly predicted high levels of novelty seeking, reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and self-transcendence but low harm avoidance. Low registration predicted high harm avoidance but low levels of reward dependence, persistence, and self-directedness. Reward dependence was predicted by high sensory sensitivity and low sensation avoiding. Conclusion : This study demonstrated that sensory processing patterns affected novelty seeking, harm avoidance, reward dependence, persistence, self-directedness, and self-transcendence in young adults.

A Predictive Model Comparison by Sex for Alcohol Consumption Behavior among Korea University Students (한국 대학생의 음주행위 예측모형의 성별 비교분석)

  • The purpose of this study was designed to develope and test the structural model that explains alcohol consumption behaviors among university students in Republic of Korea. The hypothetical model was constructed on the basis of the literature review and Pender's Health promotion model. Data was collected from questionnaires from 512 university students in Republic of Korea, from August to September, 2000. The reliability of instruments was adequate (Cronbach's alpha= .69-.90). Data analysis was done with SAS 6.12 for descriptive statistics and LISREL 8.13 program for covariance structural analysis. The results are as follows; 1. The overall fit of the hypothetical model to the data was moderate. Thus it was modified by male and female models. 2. The revised model has become parsimonious and had a better fit to the empirical data (male: χ2=87.21 p=.00, GFI=.97, AGFI= .94, NFI=.99, NNFI=1.0, CN=619.17, female: χ2=49.29 p=.31, GFI=.45, AGFI= .95, NFI=.99, NNFI=1.0, CN=370.02). 3. Self-efficacy was most significant factor and personality of novelty seeking, reward compensation, alcohol expectancy and drinking attitude have significant effects on male alcohol consumption behavior. 4. Personality of novelty seeking was most significant factor and personality of harm avoidance, friend influence, self-efficacies, alcohol expectancy and drinking attitude have significant effects on female alcohol consumption behavior.

The Influence of Depression, Temperament, Characteristic on Alcohol Drinking in Vocational High School Students in Gangwon-do (강원도지역 실업계 고등학생의 우울, 기질 및 성격특성이 음주상태에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the drinking status and to identify the impacts of depression, temperament, characteristic on drinking status in the vocational high school students. Methods: By using stratified sampling, 416 vocational high school students in Gangwon Do were selected and surveyed through self -administered questionnaires. Data were analyzed by SPSS 12.0 using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression. Results: 88% of students had experienced of drinking. Depression was observed 59.1% of students from light to severe depression score. There was a positive correlation among drinking, the school records, novelty seeking, reward dependence and persistence. Also, there was a negative correlation among drinking, economic status, harm avoidance. The significant predictors of drinking were school records, depression, novelty seeking and persistence. Conclusion: These results suggest that vocational high school students who have the factors identified in this study are regarded as having the potential to drink. The results of this study can provide the information for the development of the health promotion program.

Factors Influencing Alcohol Consuming behavior of the Female University Students (여대생의 음주행위 영향요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose was to investigate the factors influencing alcohol consuming behavior of the female university students to provide the basic data for a nursing intervention program to improve health and prohibit of alcohol consuming behavior. Method: The subjects were 134 female university students, studying at K university and K educational university in Chungnam province from April 1 to 20, 2002. The instruments were the alcohol consuming behavior scale, that is drinking intensity score, and alcohol problem developed by Shin(1998), refusal self-efficacy scale by Aas et. al.(1995), alcohol expectancy by Goldman at. al.(1989), TPQ scale by Cloninger(1991), depression scale modified by Shin(1977) using Zung(1965)' tool, family cohesion scale by Olson at. al.(1983). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation coefficient, canonical correlation and stepwise multiple regression. Result: The most powerful predictor of alcohol consuming behavior was influence of friends-drinking(21.0%). A combination of economic status(8.0%), and personality of novelty seeking(3.0%), accounted for 32.0% of the variance in alcohol consuming behavior. Conclusion: I recommended that economic status, influence of friends drinking frequently, and personality of novelty seeking were contained of the developing nursing intervention program for decreasing the alcohol consuming behavior in female university students.
