Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Winifred Watson's novel of 1938, is a fairytale in novel form. Set in London of 1938, the story revolves around a one-day adventure of an ill-starred but truthful governess who is granted a second chance. This light-hearted comedy of manners was turned into a film by director Bharat Nalluri in 2008. An Anglo-American collaboration, co-scripted by Simon Beaufoy and David McGee, the film converts Watson's quaint novel into an edged heritage piece that encapsulates the 1930s, the problematic decade between the two World Wars. The film, while sustaining the narrative core of Watson's Cinderella story, attempts to place it firmly within a wider current of the novel's setting or London in 1938, tapping into the major concerns of the interwar years that engage with characters in one way or another. Stylistically, the film presents Art Deco as a main visual idiom to convey the prevailing mood of nihilism and decadence of the day. The setting here takes on significance in that it offers a telling counterpoint to the giddy superficial world of the novel. The 1930s was a highly charged decade under the threat of fascism and the Great Depression, fraught with economic and socio-political tensions and apprehensions. The film makes an explicit reference to the dismal context which is suppressed in the original text. The thirties is, therefore, portrayed as a decade of contradiction. It features gay buoyant festivity, rampant consumerism, and shifting morals and attitudes towards love, marriage and sexuality. Yet lurking beneath the surface glamour are the symptoms of crises and the deep-seated anxieties on the eve of World War II. In this way, Watson's novel of manners has been recreated into a defining film on the 1930s with its period feel propped by the atmospheric lighting, the exuberant Jazz score, and the splendid Art Deco costume and production design.

This study was carried out in order to become that it helped a base of education to train creation of movie costume. The object is the movie costume of the movie, The Age of Innocence that got the Academy award in movie costume. This study analyzed the costume and color symbolism of the film based on the novel, The Age of Innocence written by Edith Wharton who is a realism writer, and a master of manners and customs novel, is the first Pulitzer Prizewinner as a woman. And this study created the movie costume and hair-style of two heroines, May and Ellen who lead the huge irony that is principal stream of a novel. May stands for 'irony of innocence' and Ellen does for 'absolute innocence'. And each image represents on a display of the front and back of 'innocence' symbolically. The costume design of them was planned along the character which was analyzed and interpreted irony of a drama in a viewpoint of Wharton through this study and expressed with illustration. And using 57cm Porcelain doll, produced a hair-style and costume.

Comprehensive inhibition of RUNX1, RUNX2, and RUNX3 led to marked cell suppression compared with inhibition of RUNX1 alone, clarifying that the RUNX family members are important for proliferation and maintenance of diverse cancers, and "cluster regulation of RUNX (CROX)" is a very effective strategy to suppress cancer cells. Recent studies reported by us and other groups suggested that wild-type RUNX1 is needed for survival and proliferation of certain types of leukemia, lung cancer, gastric cancer, etc. and for their one of metastatic target sites such as born marrow endothelial niche, suggesting that RUNX1 often functions oncogenic manners in cancer cells. In this review, we describe the significance and paradoxical requirement of RUNX1 tumor suppressor in leukemia and even solid cancers based on recent our findings such as "genetic compensation of RUNX family transcription factors (the compensation mechanism for the total level of RUNX family protein expression)", "RUNX1 inhibition-induced inhibitory effects on leukemia cells and on solid cancers through p53 activation", and "autonomous feedback loop of RUNX1-p53-CBFB in acute myeloid leukemia cells". Taken together, these findings identify a crucial role for the RUNX cluster in the maintenance and progression of cancers and suggest that modulation of the RUNX cluster using the pyrrole-imidazole polyamide gene-switch technology is a potential novel therapeutic approach to control cancers.

We studied the effects of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and its synthetic derivatives. HS-l030 and HS-1183. and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) and its synthetic derivatives, HS-1199 and HS-1200. on the human colon adenocarcinoma cell line. HT -29 (p53 mutant type). The effects on cell viability and growth were assessed by MTT assay and cell growth study. While UDCA and CDCA exhibited no significant effect, their novel derivatives inhibited the proliferation of HT-29 cell line in a concentration- and time-dependent manners. (omitted)

NASA, NSF and USGS jointly conducted a LIDAR survey over several sites in the Antarctic Dry Valleys and its vicinity, acquiring numerous surface points by NASA's Airborne Topographic Mapper (ATM) conical laser scanning altimetry system. The data set have high blunder ratio, and the conical scanning pattern resulted large variation of the point densities. Hence, to reduce the undesirable effects due to these characteristics and process the huge number of points with reasonable time and resources, we developed a novel approach to generate large-scale and high-resolution DEMs in robust, efficient and nearly automatic manners. Based on this approach we produced DEMs and then verified them with reference data.

Cudraxanthone D (CD) is a natural xanthone compound derived from the root barks of Cudrania tricuspidata. However, the biological functions of CD in human metabolism have been rarely reported until now. Autophagy is the self-degradation process related to cancer cell metastasis. Here, we elucidated the effects of CD on human oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) cells' metastatic ability. We confirmed that CD effectively decreased the proliferation and viability of SCC25 human OSCC cells in time- and dose-dependent manners. Also, the metastasis phenotype of the SCC25 cell (migration, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition [EMT]) was inhibited by CD. To further investigate the mechanism by which CD inhibited the metastatic capacity, we detected the relationship between EMT and autophagy in the SCC25 cells. The results revealed that CD inhibited the metastasis of the SCC25 cells by attenuating autophagy. Thus, our findings produced a potential novel agent for the treatment of human OSCC metastasis.

In this paper, various of pilot-assisted channel estimation techniques for 3GPP LTE downlink are tested under multipath Rayleigh fading channel. At first, the conventional channel estimation techniques are applied with linear zero-forcing (ZF) equalizer, such as one dimensional least square (1-D LS) linear interpolation, two dimensional (2-D) wiener filter, the time and frequency dimension separate wiener filter and maximum likelihood estimator (MLE). Considering the practical implementation, we proposed two channel estimation techniques by combining time-dimension wiener filter and MLE in two manners, which showed a good tradeoff between system performance and complexity when comparing with conventional techniques. The nonlinear decision feedback equalizer (DFE) which can show a better performance than linear ZF equalizer is also implemented for mitigating inter-carrier interference (ICI) in our system. The complexity of these algorithms are calculated in terms of the number of complex multiplications (CMs) and the performances are evaluated by showing the bit error rate (BER).

Recently, a few image-processing based mobile urine testers have actively been studied since the urine-analysis result can be available to the user in real time immediately after the test is done. However, the accuracy of test result can be severely degraded due to variable illumination environments and a variety of manners to capture the image with a camera embedded in the smartphone according to different users. This paper proposes the Check4Urine system, a novel smartphone-based portable urine-analysis tester and provides three techniques to improve such a performance degradation problem robust to various test environments and disturbances, which are the compensation algorithm to correct the varying illumination effect, an urine strip detection algorithm robust to edge loss of the object image, and the color decision algorithm based on the pre-processed reference table. Experimental results show that the proposed Check4Urine system increases the accuracy of urine-analysis by 20-50% at various test conditions, compared with the existing image-processing based mobile urine tester.

이번에 새로 발굴한 "져부인젼"은 가사체 고소설 작품으로 박재연소장본이다. 이 작품은 가사에서 흔히 발견되는 계여적(戒女的)인 경향을 보이고 있는데, 내용을 살펴보면 고소설의 특징이 잘 구현되어 있다. 이 연구는 "져부인젼"이 새로운 고소설 작품이라는 점에서 먼저 서지사항을 검토한 후 작품의 특징을 서사의 흐름을 중심으로 고찰해 보았다. "져부인젼"은 원전의 분량이 36장으로 방대한 편이다. 크기는 가로 18.4cm, 세로 29cm이며 세로쓰기로 되어 있다. 첫 장과 마지막 장을 제외하고 한 면에 12줄씩 되어 있으며 한 줄에 대략 21~23자씩 적혀 있다. 겉표지 좌측상단에 논어의 편명인 "옹야", "술이"라고 적혀 있다. 제목은 "논어" "권지삼"이라고 되어 있고 속표지에 "져부인젼"이라고 따로 제시한 후 다시 이야기의 처음부분에 "져부인야기라"라고 부연함으로써 소설이라는 것을 짐작할 수 있게 제시해 놓았다. 표지로만 본다면 마치 서책으로 인식할 정도인데, 이것은 누구나 쉽게 접할 수 없게 하고자 한 의도로 생각된다. 또한 가끔씩 빠진 글자도 있으며 한글로 쓴 내용 위에 한자 성어를 제시해 이해하는데 도움을 주고 있다. 박재연소장본 "져부인젼"은 낱말의 구성이나 언어의 활용을 통해 볼 때 대략 19세기 후반에서 20세기 초의 작품으로 판단된다. "져부인젼"의 내용은 크게 두 방향에서 파악할 수 있는데, 하나는 져부인이 고난을 극복하고 부와 명예를 얻기까지의 과정이며 하나는 시집와서 고생할 때 병이 들어 저승에 다녀온 내용이다. 두 사건 모두 뽈똥어미가 등장하는데 뽈똥어미는 악녀형 인물로 져부인의 행동과 배치되는 행동을 보이고 있다. "져부인젼"은 가부장제 사회에서 성공한 여성의 활약상을 담아낸 이야기라고 할 수 있는데 결말이 행복으로 귀결되어 있다. 즉 이야기의 흐름을 보면 크게 행복${\rightarrow}$불행${\rightarrow}$행복의 과정을 보여주고 있는데, 저승담의 개입으로 가사체로 쓰인 고소설의 편폭을 넓힌 경우에 해당한다고 하겠다. 작품의 구성을 특징적인 단락을 중심으로 살펴보면 대략 7단계로 정리해 볼 수 있다. 첫째, 부를 타고난 선한 성품 둘째, 결혼과 가난, 부의 축적 셋째, 딸에 대한 가르침, 넷째, 뽈똥어미로 경계시킴 다섯째, 시부모와의 해후와 저승구경, 여섯째, 뽈똥어미의 단죄 일곱째, 져부인의 환생과 복락이다. 이러한 서사의 흐름을 지니고 있는 "져부인젼"은 뽈똥어미와 져부인의 목숨이 서로 뒤바뀌면서 갈등이 최고조에 이르고 있다. 그리고 저승에서 시부모를 만나 위기를 넘기고 뽈똥어미가 벌을 받게 되면서 사건이 해결된다. 저승담이 후반부에 개입되면서 서사의 흐름에 큰 변화를 보이고 있다.

Peking has peculiar features as capital city, and has gone through various transformations, with its name changed from Peking to Peiping to Peking. Even when it did not serve as a capital city, it still played an unrivaled role in cultural aspects. Laoshe, a great writer of 'Peking flavour' literature, is famous for works full of cultural charms of Peking. In his works, which show the manners, norms, art, culture and optimistic life style of Peking, Peking culture is described as an extension of cultural traditions of Qiren. In addition, his critical view of reality is also expressed in the works. Linhaiyin's literary works show ordinary hutongs she experienced in the 1920s in Chengnan, the southern part of Peking, and the quiet and simple life of warm-hearted people living there. Her vague memories of Peking, along with her nostalgia for the city, let her describe the city with recreated happy memories of it instead of the harsh critical view. Her works express the city in her recreated memory full of hope, with her dark memories of the city being glossed over. As seen above, Laoshe realistically described the tragic and difficult life of low class people in hutongs of Peking as well as lower middle class people of the city. Meanwhile, in ChengnanJiushi, Linhaiyin expresses the daily routine and ordinary life of people in Peking from the perspective of middle class people. In addition, she showed the sympathetic view of middle class citizens towards their low-class neighbors. In Peking Menghualu, Wangdewei mentioned that the 'castle of memory' which old Peking people in Taiwan tried to establish fills an important gap for the continuity of Peking cultural history and cultural imagination. This indicates that the 'Peking castle of memories,' which Linhaiyin, a Taiwanese writer well known for 'Peking flavour,' has established plays a big role in filling part of such gap. ChengnanJiushi, Wuyigong's film based on Linhaiyin's novel of the same title, also describes the daily sceneries and culture of the southern Peking in the 1920s, which both Taiwanese and Chinese people miss, through sophisticated images with 'profound yearning tinted with calm sadness', accomplishing an artistic achievement different from that of the novel.
