Study on the characteristics of magnetic field distribution in AC superconducting generator using normalized data

  • AC Superconducting Generators (ACSG) are featured by 3D magnetic flux distribution, which decreases in the direction of axis. For this reason, when ACSG is optimal designed, 3D magnetic field analysis is required. This paper proposes 2D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) results normalized by 3D FEA according to the position of armature coil and the ratio of field coil width to axial length in order to reduce the analysis time. By using the proposed data, the reasonable 3D FEA results of ACSG can be only predicted by 2D FEA results. The validity of the 3D FEA results is verified by comparison with the experimental results of 30kVA superconducting synchronous generator.

Assessment of Insulation Condition in Gas Turbine Generator Stator Windings (가스터빈 발전기 고정자 권선의 절연상태 평가)

  • The results of off-line and on-line diagnostic tests performed on the stator winding of an air-cooled gas turbine(G/T) generator are reported in this paper. Off-line diagnostic tests included measurements of the ac current, dissipation factor(tan${\delta}$), and partial discharge(PD). Six epoxy-mica capacitors were installed in the three phases of G/T generator for performing on-line diagnostic testing with the turbine generator analyzer(TGA). The TGA showed that the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the PD magnitude($Q_m$) were high in phase A of the stator winding. Internal discharges were generated in phases B and C, and slot discharge occurred in phase A. According to the trend analyses of the NQN and $Q_m$ values available for insulation condition assessment for G/T generator stator windings, it was concluded that phases B and C were in good condition, whereas phase A has been significantly deteriorated.

  • Six stator slot couplers(SSC) and a flux probe sensor installed on the stator winding slots of large turbine generator. Assessment of insulation condition has been based upon the measurements of partial discharge(PD) of stator windings and shorted-turn of rotor windings in operating large turbine generator. The maximum PD magnitude(Qm), normalized quantify number(NQN), PD pattern and shorted-turn were measured using on-line insulation condition monitoring system. The NQN and Qm of slot PD side in the phase A are indicated the highest value in six SSC sensors. Monitoring system results showed that discharge at conductor surface and internal discharge were detected at the surface of stator winding and in voids of the groundwall insulation. Insulation of stator and rotor windings in large turbine generator was judged to be in good condition.

  • The on-line partial discharge (PD) in stator windings of air-cooled gas turbine (GT) generator (119.2MVA, 13.8kV) is measured and analyzed in this paper. This generator was designed by global vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI). The generator failed two times at top bar (16T) of phase B in the stator slot. Six epoxy-mica capacitors were installed in three phases of GT generator. On-line PD test was performed on GT generator using turbine generator analyzer (TGA). TGA showed that the normalized quantity number (NQN) and the PD magnitude($Q_m$) were high in phase B. Internal discharges were generated in phases A, B and C. The trend analysis of NQN and $Q_m$ value are obtained in order to monitor the insulation condition in GT generator stator windings. Phases A and C were in good condition. But phase B had deteriorated significantly

Development of On-Line Monitoring System for Pumped Storage Generator/Motor (양수발전소 발전-전동기 운전중 감시 시스템의 개발)

  • On-line monitoring system(OMS) has been developed for the pumped storage generator/motor The OMS is applied to diagnosis of the PD(partial discharge) activity of stator insulation, the shorted-turn of rotor winding and the variation of the air-gap between stator and rotor. The OMS consists of DAS(data acquisition system), main server system, gateway and display PC. The DAS measures the PD, the shorted-turn and air-gap from three sensors installed on the generator/motor. The gateway controls the data which sent by DAS. The main server system saves the data, analyzes the data and conducts the diagnostic algorithm. The display PC shows the diagnostic results of partial discharge, shorted-turn and air-gap. Field tests were conducted using PDA(partial discharge analyzer). The results of the OMS and PDA measurements can be directly correlated with normalized quantity number(NQN), PD magnitude(Qm) and PD pattern.

  • We have proposed the 4-Dimensional Multiple-Subcarrier Modulation with fixed bias in Optical Wireless Communications. Here, the 4-D signal vectors are derived from the optimization technique of signal waveforms maximizing the minimum distance between signal points in an n-dimensional Euclidean sphere. The resulting vectors are used in generating the output amplitude of impulse generator in a Multiple-Subcarrier Modulation scheme. We have achieved that the normalized power requirement of the proposed system is maximum 3 dB and 3.3 dB smaller than those of normal QPSK, Reserved Subcarrier, and Minimum Power scheme, respectively. Also, in the range of 1.125 ∼ 1.25 of the normalized bandwidth, the proposed system has maximum 3 dB, 2 ∼ 4 dB, 0 ∼ 3 dB smaller bandwidth requirement compare to normal QPSK, Res. Subcarrier, Min. Power schemes, respectively.

  • Partial discharge(PD) tests were performed both when the pumped storage generator(rated 13.8kV and 220MVA) was on-line and off-line. This generator has been equipped with 12 bus coupler sensors in directional mode. PD tests were conducted using partial discharge analyzer(PDA), partial discharge meter(PDM) and digital partial discharge detector. PDA showed that the patterns of the normalized quantity number(NQN) and the partial discharge magnitude are in accord with on-line and off-line. The insulation condition was estimated by diagnostic tests(off-line) such as PD magnitude and dissipation factor.

The μ-synthesis and analysis of water level control in steam generators

  • The robust controller synthesis and analysis of the water level process in the U-tube system generator (UTSG) is addressed in this paper. The parameter uncertainties of the steam generator (SG) are modeled as multiplicative perturbations which are normalized by designing suitable weighting functions. The relative errors of the nominal SG model with respect to the other operating power level models are employed to specify the weighting functions for normalizing the plant uncertainties. Then, a robust controller is designed based on ${\mu}$-synthesis and D-K iteration, and its stability robustness is verified over the whole range of power operations. A gain-scheduled controller with $H_{\infty}$-synthesis is also designed to compare its robustness with the proposed controller. The stability analysis is accomplished and compared with the previous QFT design. The ${\mu}$-analysis of the system shows that the proposed controller has a favorable stability robustness for the whole range of operating power conditions. The proposed controller response is simulated against the power level deviation in start-up and shutdown stages and compared with the other concerning controllers.

  • An experimental study was made of turbulent separated and reattaching flow over a blunt body, where unsteady wake was generated by a spoke wheel-type wake generator with cylindrical rods. The influence of unsteady wake was scrutinized by altering the rotating direction (CW and CCW) and the normalized passing frequency $(0{\leq}St_H{\leq}0.20)$. The Reynolds number based on the cylindrical rod was $Re_d=375$. A phase-averaging technique was employed to characterize the unsteady wake. The effect of different rotating directions was examined in detail, which gave a significant reduction of $X_R$. The wall pressure fluctuations on the blunt body were analyzed in terms of the spectrum and the coherence.
