  • The hydroxyapatite powder was prepared by the precipitation method. The obtained powder was heat-treated and its products were investigated in order to characterize its decomposition process. The powder was Ca-deficient hydroxyapatite with no relation to the Ca/P mole ratio in the initial solution. The obtained hydroxyapatite was thermally decomposed into tricalcium phosphate [Ca3(PO4)2, TCP] after heat-treatment above 80$0^{\circ}C$ and the extent of the decomposition was dependent on the nonstoichiometry of obtained hydroxyapatite, and the resultant hydroxyapatite and tricalcium phosphate maintained stable forms up to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The hydroxyapatite powder had the better stability with the samller the nonstoichinometry of hydroxyapatite. And the quantities of tricalcium phosphate obtained after decomposition were decreased, and also the corresponding decomposition temperatures were increased with decreasing extent of nonstoichiometry in precipitated hydroxyapatite.

  • Coulometric titration experiments have been done for copper doped cobaltous oxide (Co1-xCux)1-$\delta$ O with various dopant concentrations. We present the obtained experimental data and compare our results to those of previous thermogravimetric investigation. The experimental data are fitted by theoretical calculations based on various defect models. For this modeling, we considered different types fo major defects like copper in substitutional and interstitial lattice sites as well as copper vacancy. We also introduced the copper evaporation effect during titration experiment into our consideration.

  • The catalytic activity of $Nd_{1-x}Sr_xCoO_{3-y}$, $0{\leq}x{\leq}0.75$ and $0.001{\leq}y{\leq}0.103$, on the oxidation of carbon monoxide has been investigated from the structure analyses of the catalysts by X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy and the measurements of the oxidation and adsorption rates of carbon monoxide. The catalytic activity is found to be correlated with Sr substitution (x) and nonstoichiometry (y). The oxidation power of carbon monoxide increases continuously with increasing Sr substitution without oxygen, but increases with Sr substitution up to x = 0.25 and then is almost constant at larger x values up to x = 0.75 with oxygen. This change of catalytic activity is explained by the oxidation-reduction properties of the catalyst due to the variation of nonstoichiometry.

  • Lewis bases were employed to control the stoichiometry of ferrite film prepared by light enhanced plating (LEP) technique. When 2,2'-bipyridyl was used as a Lewis base, conversion electron Mosbauer spectroscopy (CEMS) and x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) experiments showed that the main component of the ferrite films was metal-deficient magnetite (Fe3(1-δ)O4). Nonstoichiometry and roughness of LEP films were increased by the addition of 2,2'-bipyridyl. Using ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) as a Lewis base, produced film that was a mixture of magnetite and Υ-FeO(OH). No low temperature transition (Verwey transition) of magnetite was detected in resistivity and ac-susceptibility measurements for the LEP films. Surface morphology of the LEP films was observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The size of dominant particles was about 0.2 μm.

  • The nonstoichiometry and electrical conductivities of Tm$_2O_3$ were studied in the oxygen pressure $2\;{\times}\;10^{-1}\;-1\;{\tiems}\;10^{-4}$ atm under the temperature ranges from 700 to 1100$^{\circ}$C. The x values of $TmO_{1.5+X}$ were varied in the ranges of 0.1004∼0.0110. The enthalpies of formation of the nonstoichiometric compounds were found to be 5.40-4.71 kcal/mole, and the average activation energy obtained from the plots of log conductivity vs. 1000/T was 1.65 eV. The Po$_2$ dependencies of the electrical conductivity were found to be linear and closely approaximated to ${\sigma}{\alpha} PO{\frac{1}{2}^{/5.3}$ in the temperature range 700∼1100$^{\circ}$C. The nonstoichiometry and the electrical conductivity are due to trivalent metal vacancies.
