  • This paper presents a nonlinear sliding mode control (SMC) scheme with a variable damping ratio for interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSMs). First, a nonlinear sliding surface whose parameters change continuously with time is designed. Actually, the proposed SMC has the ability to reduce the settling time without an overshoot by giving a low damping ratio at the initial time and a high damping ratio as the output reaches the desired setpoint. At the same time, it enables a fast convergence in finite time and eliminates the singularity problem with the upper bound of an uncertain term, which cannot be measured in practice, by using a simple adaptation law. To improve the efficiency of a system in the constant torque region, the control system incorporates the maximum torque per ampere (MTPA) algorithm. The stability of the nonlinear sliding surface is guaranteed by Lyapunov stability theory. Moreover, a simple sliding mode observer is used to estimate the load torque and system uncertainties. The effectiveness of the proposed nonlinear SMC scheme is verified using comparative experimental results of the linear SMC scheme when the speed reference and load torque change under system uncertainties. From these experimental results, the proposed nonlinear SMC method reveals a faster transient response, smaller steady-state speed error, and less sensitivity to system uncertainties than the linear SMC method.

  • Backlash in the actuator is one of the most important nonlinearities that limit the performance of speed and position control of mechanical systems. In this paper, we propose disturbance observers in order to estimate the effect of nonlinearities and cancel them subsequently. As a result the disturbance observers make the nonlinear system behave linearly. And finally we show that the disturbance observers guarantee the system robustness and the performance to reject the effect of backlash in the face of parameter uncertainties.

  • An adaptive output-feedback neural control problem of SISO strict-feedback nonlinear system is considered in this paper. The main contribution of the proposed method is that it is shown that the output-feedback control of the strict-feedback system can be viewed as that of the system in the normal form. As a result, proposed output-feedback control algorithm is much simpler than the previous backstepping-based controllers. Depending heavily on the universal approximation property of the neural network (NN) only one NN is employed to approximate lumped uncertain nonlinearity in the controlled system.

  • In this paper. feedback linearization and the sliding mode control(SMC) are used together for uncertain nonlinear system. An advantage of feedback linearization technique is to make linear control theories can be used for nonlinear system and the SMC have the robustness. But the dynamics of the SMC has the dynamics lower order than that of the original system. Therefore the linear control theory can not be used with the SMC. The novel sliding surface of the SMC can have the dynamics of the nominal non linear system controlled by the feedback linearization. The proposed method can be used for the control of induction motors.

  • It is known that Feedback linearization has important limitations-the full state has to be measured; no robustness is guaranteed with respect to parameter uncertainty and unmodeled dynamics. In this paper, we construct a nonlinear feedback linearization controller for the system containing uncertain parameters and unknown states, in the case of EMS system with rail vibration. Performance of this controller is demonstrated by computer simulation.

  • In this paper, an estimator with an appropriate adaptive law for updating parameters is designed and analyzed based on the Lyapunov theory. The adaptive law is designed so that the estimation model follows the parameterized plant model. Using the proposed estimator, the parameters of the T-S fuzzy model can be estimated by observing the behavior of the system and it can be a basis for indirect adaptive fuzzy control.

  • An extended robust H$\infty$ filter is proposed for a nonlinear uncertain system. We also analyze the characteristics of the proposed filter such as an H$\infty$ performance criterion using the Lyapunov function method. The analysis results show that proposed filter has a robustness against disturbances such as process and measurement noises and against parameter uncertainties. Then the in-flight alignment for a strapdown inertial navigation system is designed using the presented filter. Simulation results show that the proposed filter effectively improve the performance.

  • In this paper, a second order fuzzy sliding mode control that combines with a adaptive self-regulating technique is proposed for a nonlinear system with unknown dynamics. The chattering effect that is a representative disadvantage of the sliding mode control is avoided by using the second order sliding mode control instead of the first order sliding mode control. The proposed sub-controller is composed of the equivalent control that is approximated by an online rule regulation sheme and the hitting control that is used to constrain the states of the sub-system to maintain on the sub-sliding surface and used to guarantee the system robustness. Simulation results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed controller

  • Lately, tugboats are widely used to maneuver vessels by pushing or towing them where tugboats use rope. In order to correctly control the motion of tugboat and towed vessel, the dynamics of the towline would be well identified. In real application environment, the towing rope length changes and the towing load is not constant due to the various sizes of towed vessel. And there are many ropes made by many types of materials. It means that it is not easy to obtain rope dynamics, such that it is too difficult to satisfy the given control purpose by designing control system. Thus real time identification or adaptive control system design method may be a solution. However it is necessary to secure sufficient information about rope dynamics to obtain desirable control performance. In this paper, the authors try to have several rope dynamic models by changing the rope length to consider real application conditions. Among them, a representative model is selected and the others are considered as uncertain models which are considered in control system design. The authors design a robust control to cope with strong uncertain and nonlinear property included in the real plant. The designed control system based on robust control framework is evaluated by simulation.

  • In order to control systems which contain nonlinearities of uncertainties, control strategies must deal with the effects of them. Since most of control methods based on system mathematical models have been mainly developed focused on stability robustness against nonlinearities or uncertainties under the assumption that controlled systems are linear time invariant, they have certain amount of limitations to smartly improve the transient responses of systems disturbed by nonlinearities or uncertainties. In this paper, a nonlinear fuzzy PID control method is suggested which can stably improve the transient responses of systems disturbed by nonlinearities, as well as systems whose mathematical characteristics are not perfectly known. Although the derivation process is based on the design process similar to general fuzzy logic controller, resultant control law has analytical forms with time varying PID gains rather than linguistic forms, so that implementation using common-used versatile microprocessors cna be achieved easily and effectively in real-time control aspect.
