  • This study investigates the response characteristics of a four-cylinder four-stroke turbocharged diesel engine by using computer simulation and experiments when a rapid acceleration is applied to the fuelpump rack. In the theoretical analysis, linearization method is used to avoid the difficulty on the complex nonlinear functions. Comppressor exit pressure, pressure and temperature of turbine inlet, and turbocharger speed are chosen as the independent variables of transfer functions which represent the dynamic characteristics of the turbocharger system, and expressed as the functions with respect to the time. Experiments on the same eigine system are also carried out to prove the validity of theoretical study. Further, this study carried an experiment for improving transient response performance by injecting air into the inlet manifold under the rapid accelerating conditions. The effects of air injection on the response performances are also represented at varying conditions such as injection pressure, injection period, accelerating rate, accelerating time, engine speed and load.

  • Model Based Predictive Control(MBPC) has been widely used in predictive control since 80's. GPC[1] which is the superset of many MBPC strategies a popular method, but GPC has some weakness, such as insufficient stability analysis, non-applicability to internally unstable systems. However, CRHPC[2] proposed in 1991 overcomes the above limitations. So we chose RHPC based on CRHPC for electric furnace control. An electric furnace which has nonlinear properties and large time delay is difficult to control by linear controller because it needs nearly perfect modelling and optimal gain in case of PID. As a result, those controls are very time-consuming. In this paper, we applied RHPC with equality constraint to electric furnace. The reults of experiments also include the case of RHPC with monotonic weighting improving the transient response and including unmodelled dynamics. So, This paper proved the practical aspect of RHPC for real processes.

  • A thermo-elastic system in the production machine has highly nonlinear dynamic characteristics. In general, the finite element method is utilized for accurate analysis. However, it requires large computing time. Thus, thermo-elastic systems are usuallymodeled as electric and fluid system using lumped para, eter. In this paper. we propose the bondgraph model and transient simulation methodology of thermo-elastic system in consideration of various boundary and joint contact conditions. Consequently, the proposed method ensures a possibility of its on-line compensation about undesirable phenomena by using real time estimate process and electronic cooling device for thermal appropriate behavior. Thermo-elastic model consisting of bush and shaft including contact condition is presented.

  • This paper presents an optimization of permanent magnet (PM) in a brushless dc (BLDC) motor using the response surface methodology (RSM). Size and angle of the PM are optimized to minimize the cogging torque, while reducing the magnitude of harmonic at a dominant frequency and maintaining the operating torque. A fitted RS model is constructed by verifying the high reliability of the total variation and the variation of estimated error. The optimized design is validated by carrying out the reanalysis and comparing to the initial model using the nonlinear transient finite element analysis.

  • A vehicle suspension system performs two functions, the ride quality and the stability, which conflict with each other. An active suspension system has an external energy source, from which energy is always supplied to the system for continuous control of vehicle motion. Therefore, an active suspension system can have even more improved performance. Some control laws have been proposed for active suspension system, but in this paper, an optimal variable structure control(VSC) is proposed. The VSC method is well suited for a class of nonlinear system and can address the robustness issues to constant modelling errors and disturbances. This paper develops an optimal VSC controller and compares its performance to those of a passive suspension system and an active suspension system with an optimal controller. The transient and frequency responses are analyzed respectively.

  • The purpose of the present paper is to investigate the noise and vibration characteristics of externally pressurized air proceeding bearings with a circular slot restrictor. To do this, the nonlinear transient analysis including rotor imbalance was performed for a rotor-bearing system. The effects of radial clearance and the width of the bearing and mass eccentricity of the rotor on the noise and vibration characteristics of the bearing are also examined. The results show that the noise and vibration of the rotor-bearing system first increase up to critical speed of the system, and then decrease up to instability threshold speed of the system as the rotational speed of the rotor increases, and the noise of the bearing is markedly influenced by the mass eccentricity of the rotor and the radial clearance and the width of the bearing.

  • Fire loading causes a critical collapse of RC (Reinforced Concrete) Structures since the embedded steels inside are relative week against high elevated temperature. Several numerical frameworks for fire resistance have been proposed, however they have limitations such as unstable convergence and long calculation period. In the work, 2-D nonlinear FE technique is proposed using Galerkin method for RC structures under fire loading. Closed-form element stiffness with a triangular element is adopted and verified with fire test on three RC slabs with different fire loading conditions. Several simulations are also performed considering fire loading conditions, water contents, and cover depth. The proposed numerical technique can handle time-dependent fire loading, convection, radiation, and material properties. The proposed technique can be improved through early-aged concrete behavior like moisture transport which varies with external temperature.

  • Instantaneous following PWM control technique is pulsed nonlinear dynamic control method. This new control technique using analog integrator is proposed to control the duty ratio D of DC-DC converter. In this control method, the duty ratio of a switch is exactly equal to or proportional to the control reference in the steady state or in a transient. Proposed control method compensates power source perturbation in one switching cycle, and the average value of the dynamic reference in one switching cycle. There is no steady state error nor dynamic error between the control reference and the average value of the switched variable. Experiments with buck converter have demonstrated the robustness of the control method and verified theoretical prediction. The control method is very general and applicable to all type PWM.

  • Physical interconnect such as Printed Circuit Board(PCB) traces introduces new challenges for parameter extraction and delay calculation for high-speed system design. PCB traces are dominated by frequency dependent LC propagation which makes precharacterization difficult for all possible configurations. Moreover, simulating the transient behavior of the trace for noise and delay analysis requries the combined used of a variety of models and techniques for efficiently handling lossy, low-loss, frequency dependent, and coupled transmission lines together with lumped elements. In this paper we explain how the frequency dependence caused by ground plane proximity and skin effects can be modeled using the adstracted models. These abstracted (lumped) models are SPICE-compatible and can be simulated in time-domain, along with precharacterized lumped parasitic elements and nonlinear driver and load models.
