  • Variable structure control is applied to the robust output tracking control problem of general nonlinear multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Using the concept of relative degree and minimum phase, input/output(I/O) linearization is undertaken. For I/O the linearized system, a new sliding hyperplanes design method is proposed. In this procedure, we can construct very robust and efficient sliding mode controller for general nonlinear systems of relative degree higher than two. The control results are illustrated by adopting a numerical example.

  • This paper deals with the application of certain active and passive control mechanisms to control the dynamic response of a steel jacket platform due to wave-induced forces. The forces are estimated using the nonlinear Morison equation which provides nonlinear self-excited hydrodynamic forces. The influence of these forces on the response of a structure without and with vibration control mechanisms is demonstrated using a steel jacket platform as a simple example.

  • Anew discretization method for the input-driven nonlinear continuous-time system with time delay is proposed. It is based on the combination of Taylor series expansion and first-order hold assumption. The mathematical structure of the new discretization scheme is explored. The performance of the proposed discretization procedure is evaluated by case studies. The results demonstrate that the proposed discretization scheme can assure the system requirements even though under a large sampling period. A comparison between first order hold and zero-order hold is simulated also.

  • The purpose of this study is that to develop computer program, which is about to analy size nonlinear behaviour of elastic framed structures include to geometric & material nonlineality, and to formulate between stress-strain relationship. In order to examplity the efficiency of this program, a few analytical results have been obtained on : (1) nonlinear behaviour of beam which is subject to vertical force (2) nonlinear behaviour of portal frame which is subject to vertical & horizontal force.

  • In this paper, we present a global adaptive output feedback control scheme for a class of uncertain nonlinear systems to which adaptive observer backstepping method may not be applicable directly. The allowed output feedback structure includes quadratic and multiplicative dependency of unmeasured states. Our novel design technique employs a change of coordinates and adaptive backstepping. With these proposed tools, we can remove linear and quadratic dependence on the unmeasured states in the state equation. Also, the multiplication of the two unmeasured states can be eliminated ...

  • In this paper, we give a structure algorithm for the synthesis problems of the nonlinear system via dynamic feedback. Using our algorithm, sufficient conditions for the input-output synthesis problems are discussed. The problems we consider in this paper include dynamic input-output decoupling input-output linearization, and immersion into a linear system.

  • A fluid-structure-isolator interaction program was developed in this study. The behavior of liquid regions are simulated by the boundary element method, and then the technique of analyzing the free surface motion in time domain is developed by using the nonlinear free surface boundary condition(NFBC) and the condition of interface between the structure and the fluid. Structure regions are modeled by the finite element method. In order to construct the governing equation of the fluid structure interaction(FSI)problem in time domain, the finite elements for a structure and boundary elements for liquid are coupled using the equilibrium condition, the compatibility condition and NFBC. The isolator is simulated by equation proposedin 3D Basis Me. In order to verify the validity and the applicability of the developed fluid- structure -Isolator interaction program, The horizontal forced vibration analysis was performed. The applicability of the developed method is verified through the artificial seismic analysis of real size liquid storage tank.

  • This paper presents an experimental and analytical study on a steel slit damper designed as an energy dissipative device for earthquake protection of structures considering soil-structure interaction. The steel slit damper is made of a steel plate with a number of slits cut out of it. The slit damper has an advantage as a seismic energy dissipation device in that the stiffness and the yield force of the damper can be easily controlled by changing the number and size of the vertical strips. Cyclic loading tests of the slit damper are carried out to verify its energy dissipation capability, and an analytical model is developed validated based on the test results. The seismic performance of a case study building is then assessed using nonlinear dynamic analysis with and without soil-structure interaction. The soil-structure system turns out to show larger seismic responses and thus seismic retrofit is required to satisfy a predefined performance limit state. The developed slit dampers are employed as a seismic energy dissipation device for retrofitting the case study structure taking into account the soil-structure interaction. The seismic performance evaluation of the model structure shows that the device works stably and dissipates significant amount of seismic energy during earthquake excitations, and is effective in lowering the seismic response of structures standing on soft soil.

  • Common structural rule (CSR) doesn' t provide any other specific regulations for permanent means of access (PMA) platform structure in a cargo oil tank. The PMA platform is recommended to comply with scantling requirement of local support member. However, it leads to too conservative scantlings compared with actual loads imposed on the platform. This paper proposes a strength assessment procedure for the PMA structure based on a nonlinear ultimate strength. The ultimate strength is evaluated in a sufficiently conservative way. The first linear buckling mode is used as an initial imperfection shape and its magnitude is determined using the definitions of DNV PULS. Since the same imperfection mode as the failure mode of the ultimate limit state is assumed, it can accelerate the failure. Au ultimate strength capacity curve obtained from a series of nonlinear FE analysis is compared with actual stresses calculated by CSR cargo hold analysis.
