  • This paper systematically investigated the mechanical performance of the weak-axis cover-plate connection, including a beam end monotonic loading test and a column top cyclic loading test, and a series of parametric studies for exterior and interior joints under cyclic loading using a nonlinear finite element analysis program ABAQUS, focusing on the influences of the shape of top cover-plate, the length and thickness of the cover-plate, the thickness of the skin plate, and the steel material grade. Results showed that the strains at both edges of the beam flange were greater than the middle's, thus it is necessary to take some technical methods to ensure the construction quality of the beam flange groove weld. The plastic rotation of the exterior joint can satisfy the requirement of FEMA-267 (1995) of 0.03 rad, while only one side connection of interior joint satisfied ANSI/AISC 341-10 under the column top cyclic loading. Changing the shape or the thickness or the length of the cover-plate did not significantly affect the mechanical behaviors of frame joints no matter in exterior joints or interior joints. The length and thickness of the cover-plate recommended by FEMA 267 (1995) is also suitable to the weak-axis cover-plate joint. The minimum skin plate thickness and a design procedure for the weak-axis cover-plate connections were proposed finally.

  • The catalytic converter in the front part of an automobile's exhaust system converts toxic exhaust gas into nontoxic gas. The substrate in the central part of the converter has a circular or oval-shaped cross section and fine lattice-shaped walls. In the canning process, the substrate is wrapped in mats and inserted into a can. During this process, mat pressure is induced, which may cause brittle fracturing in the substrate. In this paper, a finite element program for determining the mat pressure distribution was developed to avoid these fractures. The program was created in Microsoft EXCEL, so the input and output procedures are relatively simple. It was assumed that the substrate is rigid, the mat is material nonlinear, and the can is linear elastic. The can is modeled as a beam element to resist both bending and uniform tension/compression. The number of elements is fixed to 35, and the number of iterations, to 20. The solutions are compared to ABAQUS solutions and found to be in good agreement.

  • This study aims to develop a methodology of real time forecasting of mundation risk based on DAMBRK model and Kalman filter. The model is based on implicit, nonlinear finite difference approximatIons of the one-dimensional dynamic wave equations. The stochastic estimator uses on extended Kalman filter to provide optimal updating estimates. These are accomplished by combining the predictions of the determurustic model with real time observauons modified by the Kalman filter gain ractor. Inundation risks are also estimated by applying Monte Carlo simulation to consider the variability in cross section geometry and Manning's roughness coefficient. The model calibrated by applying to the floods ot South Han River on September, 1990 and August, 1995. The Kalman tilter model indicates that significant improvement compared to deteriministic analysis in flood routing predictions in the river. Overtopping risk of levee is also presented by comparing levee height with simulated flood level. level.

  • The plastic hinge region of RC pier ensures its nonlinear behavior during strong earthquake events. It is assumed that the piers secure sufficient strength and ductility in order to prevent the collapse of the bridge during strong earthquake. However, the presence of a lap-splice of longitudinal bars in the plastic hinge region may lead to the occurrence of early bond failure in the lap-splice zone and result in significant loss of the seismic performance. The current regulations for seismic performance evaluation limit the ultimate strain and displacement ductility considering the eventual presence of lap-splice, but do not consider the lap-splice length. In this study, seismic performance test and analysis are performed according to the cross-sectional size and the lap-splice length in the case of longitudinal bars with lap-splice located in the plastic hinge region of existing RC bridge columns with circular cross-section. The seismic behavioral characteristics of the piers are also analyzed. Based upon the results, this paper presents a more reasonable seismic performance evaluation method considering the lap-splice length and the cross-sectional size of the column.

  • Exterior plate-column connection has an unsymmetrical critical section for eccentric shear of which perimeter is less than that of interior connection, and hence, around the connection, unbalanced moment and eccentric shear are developed by both gravity load and lateral loads. Therefore, exterior connection is susceptible to punching shear failure. Current design provision cannot accurately explain strength of existing experiments, partly due to the complexity in the behavior of exterior plate-column connection, or partly due to the theoretical deficiency of the strength analysis model adopted. In the present study, nonlinear finite element analyses were performed for exterior connections belonging to continuous flat plate. For each direction of lateral load, the behavior and strength of exterior plate-column connection were quite different. Based on the numerical result, strength prediction model for exterior connection was proposed for each direction of lateral load. Compared with existing experiments, the proposed method was verified.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose the confinement effectiveness of precast segmental concrete that binding by lateral confining steel in the method of precast segmental concrete pridge piers construction. Generally, the confinement effect of concrete that binding by lateral confining steel is defined by the confinement effectiveness coefficient and the confinement effectiveness coefficient is defined as the ratio of area of effectively confined concrete core to area of confined concrete core. The area of effectively confined concrete core is defined by Arching action occurred on a space of lateral confinement steel and The area of confined concrete core is defined by the ratio of area of longitudinal reinforcement to area of core of section. But in case of precast segmental concrete, concrete cover that exist on top and bottom of concrete segment should be considered.

  • This paper provides a reference to determine the seal performance of metallic O-rings for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV). A nonlinear elastic-plastic model of an O-ring was constructed by the finite element method to analyze its intrinsic properties. It is also validated by experiments on scaled samples. The effects of the compression ratio, the geometrical parameters of the O-ring, and the structure parameters of the groove on the flange are discussed in detail. The results showed that the numerical analysis of the O-ring agrees well with the experimental data, the compression ratio has an important role in the distribution and magnitude of contact stress, and a suitable gap between the sidewall and groove can improve the sealing capability of the O-ring. After the optimization of the sealing structure, some key parameters of the O-ring (i.e., compression ratio, cross-section diameter, wall thickness, sidewall gap) have been recommended for application in megakilowatt class nuclear power plants. Furthermore, air tightness and thermal cycling tests were performed to verify the rationality of the finite element method and to reliably evaluate the sealing performance of a RPV.

  • The evaluation of the drag and lift as the aerodynamic performance of airfoils is essential. In addition, the analysis of the velocity and pressure fields is needed to support the physical mechanism of the force coefficients of the airfoil. Thus, the present study aims at establishing two different deep learning models to predict force coefficients and flow fields of the airfoil. One is the convolutional neural network (CNN) model to predict drag and lift coefficients of airfoil. Another is the Encoder-Decoder (ED) model to predict pressure distribution and velocity vector field. The images of airfoil section are applied as the input data of both models. Thus, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is adopted to form the dataset to training and test of both CNN models. The models are established by the convergence performance for the various hyperparameters. The prediction capability of the established CNN model and ED model is evaluated for the various NACA sections by comparing the true results obtained by the CFD, resulting in the high accurate prediction. It is noted that the predicted results near the leading edge, where the velocity has sharp gradient, reveal relatively lower accuracies. Therefore, the more and high resolved dataset are required to improve the highly nonlinear flow fields.

  • This paper presents a hysteretic damage model for reinforced concrete (RC) joints that explicitly accounts for the bond-slip between the reinforcing bars and the surrounding concrete. A frame element whose displacement fields for the concrete and the reinforcing bars are different to permit slip is developed. From the fiber section concept, compatibility equations for concrete, rebar, and bond are defined. Modification of the hysteretic stress-strain curve of steel is conducted for partial unloading and reloading conditions. Local bond stress-slip relations for monotonic loads are updated at each slip reversal according to the damage factor. The numerical applications of the reinforcing bar embedded in the confined concrete block, the RC column anchored in the foundation, and the RC beam-column subassemblage validate the model accuracy and show how including the effects of bond-slip leads to a good assessment of the amount of energy dissipation during loading histories.
