  • In this study, the structural behavior of reinforced concrete members under simultaneous axial and blast loads was analyzed. Nonlinear dynamic analysis verification was performed using the experimental data of panels under fundamental blast load as well as those of reinforced concrete columns subjected to axial and blast loads. Because Autodyn is a program designed only for dynamic analysis, an analysis process is devised to simulate the initial stress state of members under static loads, such as axial loads. A total of 80 nonlinear dynamic finite element analysis procedures were conducted by selecting parameters corresponding to axial load ratios and scaled distances ranging 0%~70% and 1.1~2.0 (depending on the equivalent of TNT), respectively. The structural behavior was compared and analyzed with the corresponding degree of damage and maximum lateral displacement through the changes in axial load ratio and scaled distance. The results show that the maximum lateral displacement decreases due to the increase in column stiffness under axial loads. In view of the foregoing, the formulated analysis process is anticipated to be used in developing blast-resistant design models where structural behavior can be classified into three areas considering axial load ratios of 10%~30%, 30%~50%, and more than 50%.

  • Recently, the RF inductive discharge or inductively coupled plasma continues to attract growing attention as an effective plasma source in many industrial applications, the best known of which are plasma processing and lighting technology. To the point of lighting sources, the ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamps utilizing an inductively coupled plasma have been objects of interest and research during the last decades, mainly because of their potential for extremely long life, high lamp efficacies, rapid power switching response. In this paper, maxwell 3D finite element analysis program (Ansoft) was used to obtain electromagnetic properties associated with the coil and nearby structures. The electromagnetic emitting properties were presented by 3D simulation software operated at 250 kHz and some specific conditions. The electromagnetic field in the ferrite core was shown to be high and symmetric. An LS-100 luminance meter and a Darsa-2000 spectrum analyzer were used in the experiment. According to data on the lamp tested using high magnetic field ferrite, the optical and thermal wave fields were shown to be high around the ring-shaped electrodeless fluorescent lamp. The optical or light field was high at the center of the bulb rather than around the ferrite core. The light conditions of the bulb were assumed to be complex, depending on the condition of the filler gas, the volume of the bulb, and the frequency of the inverter. Our results have shown coupling between the gas plasma and the field of the light emitted to be nonlinear.

  • Design and analysis of road subgrade system, which is exposed to repetitive loading condition, uses resilient modulus. The behavior of railway subgrade system will not be quite different from that of road system. Following this phenomenological feature of the subgrade system, this paper introduces the implementation of the resilient modulus based constitutive model on a commercial finite element software. The implementation of the resilient modulus models such as K-${\theta}$ and Uzan on a FE program has been conducted previously. These model assumes that the material state reaches to the nonlinear elastic condition and with further application of repetitive loads, the response of material is completed in elastic condition. According to the recent test results performed on cohesive subgrade soils, however, permanent deformation occurs with repetitive loads. With aids of previously suggested models the permanent deformation cannot be modeled. To overcome such limitation a plastic potential derived from the test results and simple failure criterion based constitutive model is developed. The comparison between the analysis and test results shows a good correlation.

  • A column resisting axial load and seismic load is one of the main members in a structural system. The heated column by event of a fire can lose its strength and it may damage its structural system or cause the collapse of the entire structural system. In this study, the fire resistance capacity of internally confined hollow concrete filled tube (ICH CFT) column was investigated. In an ICH CFT column, the yield strength of the external tube is important as a concrete filled tube (CFT) column because the external tube confines the filled concrete and the strength of the column depends on the confined effect. A study was performed by finite element analyses considering the confined effect and material nonlinearity as the temperature changes by the fire. The hollow ratio, the thickness of the external tube, and the strength of concrete were selected as the parameters for the analyses. The analyses were performed by using a commercial FEA program (ABAQUS) and nonlinear concrete model program. The analysis results showed that the hollow ratio and the strength of concrete mainly affect the fire resisting capacity of an ICH CFT column.

  • There were already several studies conducted on the steel-concrete (SC) composite column, which was developedcomplement the weaknesses and maintain the advantages of previous composite columns. The axial compressive capacity of the SC composite column was estimated by the tests in previous studies, but the experiments for the large-scale column could not be performed because of the limitation with the laboratory's capacity. In this study, the analytical study was performed using the general finite element analysis program to reflect the interaction of concrete and steel and the local buckling of steel flange composed of the non-compact section. The appropriateness of the analytical model was verified by the comparison between experimental and analytical results. The nonlinear behavior of full-scale SC composite column was analyzed using the verified analytical model. From these analytical studies, it was concluded that the width-to-thickness ratio of the steel cross-section of the SC composite column should not exceed 25:0. The section area of the link is best when it is over 0.025 dt, and the link distance is to be less than D/2 or 300mm.

  • The hybrid test is one of the most advanced test methods to predict the structural dynamic behavior with the interaction between a physical substructure and a numerical modeling in the hybrid control system. The purpose of this study is to perform the multi-directional dynamic test of a steel frame structure with the real-time hybrid system and to evaluate the validation of the results. In this study, FEAPH, nonlinear finite element analysis program for hybrid only, was developed and the hybrid control system was optimized. The inefficient computational time was improved with a fixed number iteration method and parallel computational techniques used in FEAPH. Furthermore, the previously used data communication method and the interface between a substructure and an analysis program were simplified in the control system. As the results, the total processing time in real-time hybrid test was shortened up to 10 times of actual measured seismic period. In order to verify the accuracy and validation of the hybrid system, the linear and nonlinear dynamic tests with a steel framed structure were carried out so that the trend of displacement responses was almost in accord with the numerical results. However, the maximum displacement responses had somewhat differences due to the analysis errors in material nonlinearities and the occurrence of permanent displacements. Therefore, if the proper material model and numerical algorithms are developed, the real-time hybrid system could be used to evaluate the structural dynamic behavior and would be an effective testing method as a substitute for a shaking table test.

  • In this study, a method has been proposed for the static and dynamic nonlinear analysis of multi-storey buildings, which takes into account the contribution of axial deformations in vertical load-bearing elements, which are especially important in tall and narrow structures. Shear deformations on the shear walls were also taken into account in the study. The presented method takes into account the effects that are not considered in the fishbone and flexural-shear beam models developed in the literature. In the Fishbone model, only frame systems are modeled. In the flexural shear beam model developed for shear wall systems, shear deformations and axial deformations in the walls are neglected. Unlike the literature, with the model proposed in this study, both shear deformations in the walls and axial deformations in the columns and walls are taken into account. In the proposed model, multi-storey building is represented as a sandwich beam consisting of Timoshenko beams pieced together with a double-hinged beam. At each storey, the total moment capacities of the frame beams and the coupled beams in the coupled shear walls are represented as the equivalent shear capacity. On the other hand, The sums of individual columns and walls moment at the relevant floor level are represented as equivalent moment capacity at that floor level. At the end of the study, examples were solved to show the suitability of the proposed method in this study. The SAP2000 program is employed in analyses. In a conclusion, it is observed that among the solved examples, the proposed sandwich beam model gives good results. As can be seen from these results, it is seen that the presented method, especially in terms of base shear force, gives very close results to the detailed finite element method.

  • The objective of this study is to perform finite element analyses(FEA) using the anisotropic hardening constitutive model on the basis of the total stress concept. An anisotropic hardening model was then developed to solve the problem and its mathematical formulations and experimental verifications were also described. In a companion paper, the constitutive equation will be formulated for accurate and efficient solutions of FEA, and coded into a nonlinear analysis program, and finally a field problem will be analyzed. The proposed model includes the failure criterion of a von Mises type and the anisotropic hardening rule based on the generalized isotropic hardening description, which can model the nonlinearity and the anisotropy of the stress-strain relationship. As a result this study could verty the experimental results for UU triaxial tests, CU triaxial tests for overconsolidated samples, and anisotropic loading tests with the rotation of principal stress axes for $K_0$consolidated samples.

  • Inelastic nonlinear behavior of a hyperbolic cooling tower under wind loading is studied using a finite element program developed on a Cray Y-MP. Convergence studies for the elastic and inelastic analyses are performed using three mesh models. It is shown that the mesh convergence plays an important role in accurately predicting the inelastic behavior of a cooling tower. Even though the cooling tower resists the applied forces through membrane stresses, it is found that the bending stresses play an important role in the failure and behavior of the cooling tower. The present analysis gives a shape factor of 1.48, which indicates a significant redistribution of meridional stresses. It is further evidenced by the distribution of meridional reinforcement yielding which reaches up to $30^{\circ}$ from the windward meridian. The present practice of using elastic analysis for calculating the design stresses appears to be at least safe and conservative. A more comprehensive study should lead to conclusions that would allow use of a higher-than-one shape factor, thus requiring less meridional reinforcement than the present design method does.

  • The so-called Pier-Shafts system which consists of the continuous column and shaft is often used to support the highway bridge structure because of advantages in easy construction and low cost. In the earthquake region, the Pier-Shafts system undergoes large displacements and represents a nonlinear behavior under the lateral seismic loading. The soil-pile interaction should be considered for more accurate analysis of the Pier-Shafts system. In this study, a transverse response of a reinforced concrete Pier-Shafts system inside multi-layered soil medium is predicted using a finite element program which adopts an elasto-plastic interface model for the interface behavior between the shaft and the soil. Then, seismic analysis is performed to evaluate the performance of Pier-Shafts system under strong ground motion and their results are verified with experimental data.
