  • Nonlinear pricing abounds in practice because it is a potentially powerful pricing method to explore consumer surplus. The various forms of nonlinear pricing are feasible within a given industry. In this context, it is important for manufacturers and retailers to understand which nonlinear pricing scheme is appropriate to apply in their specific situation and which nonlinear pricing schedule is the most profitable in their market situation. Although the merits of nonlinear pricing are well documented, the attempt to apply nonlinear pricing in medical service has been relatively rare. The researcher aims to try to full this gap by applying a practice-oriented simulation model to health examination data. We compare the sales volumes among nonlinear pricing scheme such as n-block tariff, two-part tariff, and uniform pricing. We found that n-block tariff outperforms two-part tariff and uniform pricing.

  • To control nonlinear chemical processes, a new neural linearizing control scheme is proposed. This is a hybrid of a radial basis function(RBF) network and a linear controller, thus the control action applied to the process is the sum of both control actions. Firstly, to train the RBF newtork a linear reference model is determined by analyzing the past operating data of the process. Then, the training of the RBF newtork is iteratively performed to minimize the difference between outputs of the process and the linear reference model. As a result, the apparent dynamics of the process added by the RBF newtork becomes similar to that of the linear reference model. After training, the original nonlinear control problem changes to a linear one, and the closed-loop control performance is improved by using the optimum tuning parameters of the linear controller for the linear dynamics. The proposed control scheme performs control and training simultaneously, and shows a good control performance for nonlinear chemical processes.

  • This study describes the application of a two dimensional depth integrated numerical model. The explict scheme of finite difference method had been applied to the model of circulation. The nonlinear terms showed a slight difference for the variations of water elevation when calculated grid was small. They were also found to be minor when calculated grid size was increased. For verification of the numerical model, numerical results were compared with predicted values and field data. In the model, the effect of nonlinear advective terms proved not to be significant.

  • We consider a finite difference approximation to a singular boundary value problem arising in the study of a nonlinear circular membrane under normal pressure. It is proved that the rate of convergence is $O(h^2)$. To obtain the solution of the finite difference equation, an iterative scheme converging monotonically to the solution of the finite difference equation is introduced. And the numerical experiment of this method is given.

  • Soliton solutions of a class of generalized nonlinear evo-lution equations are discussed analytically and numerically which is achieved using a travelling wave method to formulate one-soliton solution and the finite difference method to the numerical dolutions and the interactions between the solitons for the generalized nonlinear Schrodinger equations. The characteristic behavior of the nonlinear-ity admitted in the system has been investigated and the soliton state of the system in the limit of $\alpha\;\longrightarrow\;0$ and $\alpha\;\longrightarrow\;\infty$ has been studied. The results presented show that soliton phenomena are character-istics associated with the nonlinearities of the dynamical systems.

  • A fundamental study for the numerical scheme to simulate unsteady nonlinear waves by solving Euler equations is presented. First a conservation form and a non-conservation form of the Euler equations with a free surface fitted coordinate system are compared. Next, a time splitting fractional step method and an alternating direction implicit(ADI) method for the time integration are compared. For the comparative study, flow calculations around a bottom bump in a channel and a NACA 0012 hydrofoil in a flume are performed. The results show that the ADI method with a third order upwind differencing scheme is very efficient in reducing the computing time with keeping the accuracy, And, there is no distinct difference between two expression forms except that the non-conservative form shows faster wave propagating velocity than the conservation form. Some results are compared with experiments and show good agreement.

  • We consider two finite difference approxiamations to a singular boundary value problem arising in the study of a nonlinear circular membrane under normal pressure. It is shown that the rates of convergence are O(h) and O($h^2$), respectively. An iterative scheme is introduced which converges to the solution of the finite difference equations. Finally the numerical experiments are given

  • This paper presents the effect of axial stretching on large amplitude free vibration of an extensible suspended cable supported at the same level. The model formulation developed in this study is based on the virtual work-energy functional of cables which involves strain energy due to axial stretching and work done by external forces. The difference in the Euler equations between equilibrium and motion states is considered. The resulting equations govern the horizontal and vertical motion of the cables, and are coupled and highly nonlinear. The solution for the nonlinear static equilibrium configuration is determined by the shooting method while the solution for the large amplitude free vibration is obtained by using the second-order central finite difference scheme with time integration. Numerical examples are given to demonstrate the vibration behaviour of extensible suspended cables.

  • A Digital Wave Tank simulation technique, based on a finite-difference method and a modified marker-and-cell (MAC) algorithm, is applied in order to investigate the characteristics of nonlinear Tsunami propagations and their interactions with a 2D sloping beach, Ohkushiri Island, and to predict maximum wove run-up around the island. The Navier-Stokes (NS) and continuity equation are governed in the computational domain, and the boundary values are updated at each time step, by a finite-difference time-marching scheme in the frame of the rectangular coordinate system. The fully nonlinear, kinematic, free-surface condition is satisfied by the modified marker-density function technique. The near shore Tsunami is assumed to be a solitary wave, and is generated from the numerical wave-maker in the developed Digital Wave Tank. The simulation results are compared with the experiments and other numerical methods, based on the shallow-water wave theory.
