Incompatible deformation and damage evolution of mixed strata specimens containing a circular hole

  • Analysing the incompatible deformation and damage evolution around the tunnels in mixed strata is significant for evaluating the tunnel stability, as well as the interaction between the support system and the surrounding rock mass. To investigate this issue, confined compression tests were conducted on upper-soft and lower-hard strata specimens containing a circular hole using a rock testing system, the physical mechanical properties were then investigated. Then, the incompatible deformation and failure modes of the specimens were analysed based on the digital speckle correlation method (DSCM) and Acoustic Emission (AE) data. Finally, numerical simulations were conducted to explore the damage evolution of the mixed strata. The results indicate that at low inclination angles, the deformation and v-shaped notches inside the hole are controlled by the structure plane. Progressive spalling failure occurs at the sidewalls along the structure plane in soft rock. But the transmission of the loading force between the soft rock and hard rock are different in local. At high inclination angles, v-shaped notches are approximately perpendicular to the structure plane, and the soft and hard rock bear common loads. Incompatible deformation between the soft rock and hard rock controls the failure process. At inclination angles of 0°, 30° and 90°, incompatible deformations are closely related to rock damage. At 60°, incompatible deformations and rock damage are discordant due that the soft rock and hard rock alternately bears the major loads during the failure process. The failure trend and modes of the numerical results agree very well with those observed in the experimental results. As the inclination angles increase, the proportion of the shear or tensile damage exhibits a nonlinear increase or decrease, suggesting that the inclination angle of mixed strata may promote shear damage and restrain tensile damage.

  • A system software on-line spectral analysis of atomic emission spectrometer. The system program consisted of a control part for the optical instruments and the spectrum analysis part the artificial intelligence method to reduce nonlinear error of the wavelengths. McPHERSON 207 Monochromator controlled GPIB communication protocol, and the detector signal was measured from PMT by using A/D Amplifier that was made by Photon_Tek. co.. HNN(Hybrid Neural Network) of artificial intelligence technique was applied to the qualitative analysis of P, Cu, Fe, Cr, and that was accurately applied to the quantitative analysis of Cd with 10 ppb level better than the conventional methods.

Simplified Dynamic Modeling of Small-Scaled Rotorcraft (축소형 회전익 항공기의 간략화된 동적 모델링)

  • It is prerequisite that we have to fomulate the nonlinear mathematical modeling to design the guidance and control system of rotorcraft-based unmanned aerial vehicle using a small-scaled commercial helicopter. The small-scaled helicopters are very different from the full-scale helicopters in dynamic behavior such as high rotation speed and high frequency dynamic characteristics. In this paper, the formulation of the mathematical model of the small-scaled helicopter to minimize the complexity is presented by component and source build-up approach. It is linearized at the trim condition of hovering and forward flight and analyzed the flight modes. The results of this approach have general trends but a little difference. To verify this approach, it is necessary to compare this theoretical model with experimental results by system identification using flight test as a next research topic.

Integrating OpenSees with other software - with application to coupling problems in civil engineering

  • Integration of finite element analysis (FEA) software into various software platforms is commonly used in coupling systems such as systems involving structural control, fluid-structure, wind-structure, soil-structure interactions and substructure method in which FEA is used for simulating the structural responses. Integrating an FEA program into various other software platforms in an efficient and simple way is crucial for the development and performance of the entire coupling system. The lack of simplicity of the existing integration methods makes this integration difficult and therefore entails the motivation of this study. In this paper, a novel practical technique, namely CS technique, is presented for integrating a general FEA software framework OpenSees into other software platforms, e.g., Matlab-$Simulink^{(R)}$ and a soil-structure interaction (SSI) system. The advantage of this integration technique is that it is efficient and relatively easy to implement. Instead of OpenSees, a cheap client handling TCL is integrated into the other software. The integration is achieved by extending the concept of internet based client-server concept, taking advantage of the parameterization framework of OpenSees, and using a command-driven scripting language called tool command language (TCL) on which the OpenSees' interface is based. There is no need for any programming inside OpenSees. The presented CS technique proves as an excellent solution for the coupling problems mentioned above (for both linear and nonlinear problems). Application examples are provided to validate the integration method and illustrate the various uses of the method in the civil engineering.

A Linear Approximation Model for an Asset-based Weapon Target Assignment Problem (자산기반 무기할당 문제의 선형 근사 모형)

  • A missile defense system is composed of radars detecting incoming missiles aiming at defense assets, command control units making the decisions on weapon target assignment, and artillery batteries firing of defensive weapons to the incoming missiles. Although, the technology behind the development of radars and weapons is very important, effective assignment of the weapons against missile threats is much more crucial. When incoming missile targets toward valuable assets in the defense area are detected, the asset-based weapon target assignment model addresses the issue of weapon assignment to these missiles so as to maximize the total value of surviving assets threatened by them. In this paper, we present a model for an asset-based weapon assignment problem with shoot-look-shoot engagement policy and fixed set-up time between each anti-missile launch from each defense unit. Then, we show detailed linear approximation process for nonlinear portions of the model and propose final linear approximation model. After that, the proposed model is applied to several ballistic missile defense scenarios. In each defense scenario, the number of incoming missiles, the speed and the position of each missile, the number of defense artillery battery, the number of anti-missile in each artillery battery, single shot kill probability of each weapon to each target, value of assets, the air defense coverage are given. After running lpSolveAPI package of R language with the given data in each scenario in a personal computer, we summarize its weapon target assignment results specified with launch order time for each artillery battery. We also show computer processing time to get the result for each scenario.

  • In this paper we present an approach to the structure identification based on genetic algorithm and to the parameter identification by hybrid learning method in neuro-fuzzy-genetic hybrid system in order to predicate the Mackey-Glass Chaotic time series. In this scheme the basic idea consists of two steps. One is the construction of a fuzzy rule base for the partitioned input space via genetic algorithm, the other is the corresponding parameters of the fuzzy control rules adapted by the backpropagation algorithm. In an attempt to test the performance the proposed system, three patterns, x(t-3), x(t-6) and x(t-9), was prepared according to time interval. It was through lots of simulation proved that the initial small error of learning owed to the good structural identification via genetic algorithm. The performance was showed in Table 2.

  • Airframe structure development of the 35 kg class 'Disaster and Public Safety Multicopter' UAV is described in this paper. To reduce the airframe weight, T-700 grade CFRP composite material was used, and the fuselage was designed with the semi-monocoque structure and plate installed with the control and communication devices designed in a sandwich structure. The specimen tests for the laminated plate and pipe were conducted to verify the strength and stiffness of the designed parts. The stacking sequence of composite materials was determined by the static strength and vibration analysis, and landing gear strut was designed by the nonlinear analysis with decent speed and ground clearance requirements. The static strength test was performed to evaluate the structural integrity and to verify the landing gear behavior.

  • Albatross uses dynamic soaring technique to obtain energy from horizontal winds and fly long distances without flapping. These dynamic soaring technique can be applied to manned/unmanned aircraft to reduce the components required for the aircraft and achieve light weight and small volume to effectively perform a given task. In this paper, to simulate the dynamic soaring technique of Albatross, we defined the optimization problem and set each boundary condition to derive the optimal flight trajectory and carry out simulations to follow it. In particular, to model dynamic soaring simulations more closely with reality, we proposed a horizontal wind model that changes every moment. This identifies and analyzes the effect of the time-variable horizontal wind model on the dynamic soaring mission of unmanned aircraft.

Earthquake Response Analysis for Three-Story Building with Reinforced Concrete Shear Walls (3층 철근콘크리트 전단벽 구조물의 지진응답해석)

  • A shake table test is conducted for the three-story reinforced concrete building structure using 0.28 g, 0.5 g, 0.75 g, and 1.0 g of seismic input motions based on the Gyeongju earthquake. Computational efforts are made in parallel to explore the mechanical details in the structure. For engineering practice, the elastic modulus of concrete and rebar in the dynamic analysis is reduced to 38% and 50%, respectively, to calibrate the structure's natural frequencies. The engineering approach to the reduced modulus of elasticity is believed to be due to the inability to specify the flexibility of the actual boundary conditions. This aspect may lead to disadvantages of nonlinear dynamic analysis that can distort local stress and strain relationships. The initial elastic modulus can be applied directly without the so-called engineering adjustment with infinite element models with spring and spring-dashpot boundary conditions. This has the advantage of imposing the system flexibility of the structure on the sub-boundary conditions of springs and damping devices to control its sensitivity in a serial arrangement. This can reflect the flexibility of realistic boundary conditions and the effects of system damping (such as the gap between a concrete footing and shake table, loosening of steel anchors, etc.) in scalar quantities. However, these spring and dashpot coefficients can only be coordinated based on experimental results, making it challenging to select the coefficients in-prior to perform an experimental test.

Compensation Characteristics Depending on Extinction Ratio of RZ Pulse in Dispersion-managed Link Combined with MSSI (MSSI와 결합된 분산 제어 링크에서 RZ 펄스의 소광비에 따른 보상 특성)

  • When mid-span spectral inversion (MSSI), which inverts the propagated wave into phase-conjugated wave in the middle of the entire transmission distance, is combined with dispersion-managed link, it is very effective in compensating for the wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) signal distortion due to chromatic dispersion and nonlinear effects. In this MSSI combined dispersion-managed link, the shape of the dispersion map, channel data rate, channel wavelength and wavelength spacing, etc. affect the compensation and, consequently, determine the transmission distance and capacity of the WDM signal. In this paper, the compensation according to the extinction ratio of the return-to-zero (RZ) pulse that constitutes the WDM signal in the MSSI combined distributed control link was numerically analyzed. As a result of the simulation, it was conformed that the extinction ratio to obtain the best compensation should be determined depending on the shape of the dispersion map and the size of the residual dispersion per span, which determines the specific shape of the dispersion map. These results show a significant difference from the results in a general optical transmission system, where as the extinction ratio increases, the power difference between the '1' and '0' signals increases, thereby improving reception performance.
