In this study, steady and unsteady aerodynamic analyses of a huge rocket configuration have been conducted in a transonic flow region. The launch vehicle structural response are coupled with the transonic flow state transitions at the nose of the payload fairing. The developed fluid-structure coupled analysis system is applied for aeroelastic computations combining computational structural dynamics(CSD), finite element method(FEM) and computational fluid dynamics(CFD) in the time domain. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Navier-Stokes equations using the structured grid system have been applied to the rocket configurations. Also, it is typically shown that the current computation approach can yield realistic and practical results for rocket design and test engineers.

Integrating a 3D solid modeler with a general purpose FEM code, an automatic nonlinear analysis system of the 3D crack problems has been developed. A geometry model, i.e. a solid containing one or several 3D cracks is defined. Several distributions of local node density are chosen, and then automatically superposed on one another over the geometry model by using the fuzzy knowledge processing. Nodes are generated by the bucketing method, and ten-noded quadratic tetrahedral solid elements are generated by the Delaunay triangulation techniques. The complete finite element(FE) model generated, and a stress analysis is performed. In this system, burden to analysts fur introducing 3D cracks to the FE model as well as fur estimating their fracture mechanics parameters can be dramatically reduced. This paper describes the methodologies to realize such functions, and demonstrates the validity of the present system.

Rubber isolator has properties that can adjust easily stiffness and can be formed various shape. Also, it has high damping and is effective about structure-borne noise at high frequency range, So, rubber mount has widely used to isolate vibration at industrial equipment and construction field. However, rubber material is nonlinear and require enough consideration about shape factor whenever it is designed. The purpose of this paper is to develop conical rubber mount using compression and shear elasticity. The first, the dimension of mount is calculated by theoretical analysis considering design condition and static characteristics have been analyzed by FEM method. In addition, the fatigue test of rubber mount is performed to get reliability for product life and dynamic stiffness test is executed to get dynamic magnification factor. Finally, transmissibility test of vibration isolator has been carried out to suggest normal quantity data about vibration isolation.

In the development of sheet-handling machinery, it is important to predict the static and dynamic behavior of the sheets with a high degree of reliability because the sheets are fed and stacked at such a high speed. Flexible media behaves geometric nonlinearity of large displacement and small strain. In this paper, static and dynamic analyses of flexible media are performed by FEM considering geometric nonlinearity. Linear stiffness matrix and geometric nonlinear stiffness matrix based on the Co-rotational(CR) approach are derived and numerical simulations are performed by Updated Newton-Raphson(UNR) method and Newmark integration scheme.

In this study, structural thermal analyses for steam trap valve considering contact boundary condition have been conducted for high temperature and pressure conditions using nonlinear finite element method. Full steam trap model also including regulator and housing structures is considered in order to accurately simulate the complex valve mechanism and investigate thermal stress levels, and structural behaviors of core structural parts. It is typically shown that the present computational approach can give very useful results for design engineers so that the operating performance and structural safety of the steam trap valve can be verified in the design process.

Recently, Fiber sheets have been used for strengthening the deteriorated reinforced concrete RC slabs because of its resistant capacity of corrosion and repairing works. The purpose of this study is to carry out the experimental studies on thirteen kinds of RC slabs and to investigate the behavior of RC slabs form the experimental results. Test parameters are the strengthening material, the number of sheet layer and strengthening direction. The behavior of strengthened He: slabs is represented by crack load-deflection curves and maximum load. And the parametric study based on the nonlinear FEM analysis are performed and its results are discussed.

This paper numerically analyzes the dynamic characteristics of a spindle system supported by two identical journal bearingsconsidering bearing span that has dynamic load due to its mass unbalance. The Reynolds equation is transformed to solve a herringbone grooved journal bearing. The Reynolds equations are solved using FEM in order to calculate the pressure distribution in a fluid film. Reaction forces and friction torque are obtained by integrating the pressure and shear stress along the fluid film, respectively. Dynamic behaviors, such as whirl radius or angular displacement of a rotor, are determined by solving its nonlinear equations of motion with the Runge-Kutta method. This research shows that the same bearing spans of upper and lower journal bearings produce the minimum runout and friction torque of a spindle system.

Damage and fracture of concrete is characterized as the degradation of strength and stiffness. There can be modeled as the so-called homogenized crack model which can overcome the mesh sensitivity. But the plasticity and damage modeling for damage behavior before the fracture of concrete should be combined with the crack model. In this study, a damage function and an unified hardening-softening function are applied to the homogenized crack model to develope a 3-dimensional FEM program for nonlinear damage and fracture analysis of concrete. The comparison of numerical results and experimental data show that the combined modeling in this study can simulate the damage and fracture of concrete without the mesh-sensitivity. It is also shown that the behavior of the so-called Engineering Cementitious Composite(ECC) characterized by strain-hardening and multiple cracks can be well simulated using the modeling.
In this paper, a transient analysis method of Switched Reluctance Motors(SRM) is presented. The Finite Element Method(FEM) is used to model the nonlinear magnetic field and is coupled to the power circuits and mechanical system. The time derivative term in the differential equation is formulated by the time difference method. The proposed method is applied to a 4 phase 16/12 SRM to study starting characteristics and an fault due to the failure of a transistor in the converter.

The present paper studies the ultimate torsional strength of stiffened box girders with large deck opening due to the influence of cracks. Three types of hull girders with different spans are provided for comparison. Potential parameters which may have effects on the torsional strength including the mesh refinement, initial deflection, material strain hardening, geometric properties of crack and stiffener are discussed. Two new concepts that play an significant role in the ultimate strength research of damaged box girders are introduced, one of which is the effective residual section (ERS), the other is the initial damage of the failure zone (IDFZ) for intact structures. New simple formulas for predicting the residual ultimate torsional strength of cracked stiffened box girders are derived on the basis of the two new concepts.
