  • PURPOSES : In this study, analyze the characteristics of IOC indicator 'threshold' which is needed when evaluating the traffic signal operation status with ESPRESSO in various grade road traffic environment of Seoul metropolitan city and derive suggested value to use in field practice. METHODS : Using the computerized database program (Postgresql), we extracted data with regional characteristics (Arterial, Collector road) and temporal characteristics (peak hour, non-peak hour). Analysis of variance and Duncan's validation were performed using statistical analysis program (SPSS) to confirm whether the extracted data contains statistical significance. RESULTS : The analysis period of the main and secondary arterial roads was confirmed to be suitable from 14 days to 60 days. For the arterial, it is suggested to use 20 km/h as the critical speed for PM peak hour and weekly non peak hour. It is suggested to use 25 km/h as the critical speed for AM peak hour and night non peak hour. As for the collector road, it is suggested to use 20 km/h as the critical speed for PM peak hour and weekly non peak hour. It is suggested to use 30 km/h as the critical speed for AM peak hour and night non peak hour. CONCLUSIONS : It is meaningful from a methodological point of view that it is possible to make a reasonable comparative analysis on the signal intersection pre-post analysis when the signal operation DB is renewed by breaking the existing traffic signal operation evaluation method.

  • This paper concerns a flow control method that can reduce rainwater containing non-point contamination accumulated on road surfaces during initial rainfall. In early rainfall, non-point pollutants are blocked from entering rivers and oceans and flow to sewage treatment plants. Afterwards, rainwater, which has been removed from the non-point pollution source through jet lag, is safely flowing into the river.

  • Micropollutants, which can be caused by imperfect combustion, are toxic chemical compound that flows into the river system after being contained in road runoff, a non-point source pollutant and accumulates in the body. The micropollutants that have characteristics such as toxicity, persistence, bio-accumulation, long-range transportation behave so similarly to micro particles that they can be removed by means of filtration or absorption. This study has examined the kinds and concentrations of micropollutants contained in deposited road particles. It has revealed that the kinds of micropollutants contained in the clarified supernatant liquid of deposited road particles are heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs) composed of two or three benzene rings, including naphthalene and acenaphthalene. Their concentrations have been shown to be low, with 0.418 mg/L, 0.058 mg/L, 0.104 mg/L, 0.014 mg/L, 0.00075 mg/L for Zn, Pb, Cu, Cr, Cd, respectively and 0.00156 mg/L and 0.00184 mg/L for naphthalene and acenaphthalene.

  • Traffic accident by aging drivers is expected to be on the rise rapidly as the number of aging drivers is rising along with the aging trend being progressed. In this study, traffic accident features depending on the classification of aging population and non aging one was evaluated. As a result of this evaluation, effect factors influencing over the aging population was found to be expressed differently from that of the non aging one. Odds ratio between the aging population and non aging one was evaluated through logit model and a model with potential accident probability of the aged drivers was developed. Accident risk of the aged drivers under the condition of curved road, cutting section and moistured road was revealed to be higher than that of the non aging population.

  • In this paper, a semi-active suspension adapting to road variation which also considers the frequency snesitivity of human is proposed. First, a road adapting controller composed of system identification and LQG control is designed. Using the extended least squares method, the road property is estimated by system identification as it varies, and the LQG controller considering the estimated road property and the frequency sensitivity of human is designed. Next, the semi-active suspension is made, which tracks the performance of the active suspension with the road adapting controller. Through numerical simulation, the performance of the proposed semi-active suspension is compared with that of a non-adaptive semi-active suspension with frequency-shaped performance index. As a result, we see that the road adapting semi-active suspension has better performance.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution state of road shops around the 9 main fashion trade areas in Seoul, and to analyze whether there were any differences in them based on clothing, store types and regions. Furthermore, by investigating the distribution state of road shops in the 9 main fashion trade areas per year, this study provides basic information that can be helpful in opening and securing road shops in major trade areas. The method of investigation was to analyze clothing types and store types with 72 maps of commercial areas. Samsungdesignnet investigated these areas for 8 years around the 9 main fashion trade areas (Garosugil, Gangnam nonhyun, Gangnam Station, Myungdong, Moonjung, Apgujung, Yeonsinne, Edae, and Chungdam). As a result, the distribution state of the fashion road shops based on clothing types revealed that road shops for ladies' wear, bag or shoes, and total fashion were strong, and the distribution state of non brand were strong. When it came to year-to-year trends, road shops for women's wear, bag or shoes, and total fashion showed a steady increasing tendency of being on-trend, but casuals and underwear showed a falling tendency of being on-trend. In terms of store type distribution, non-brand shops showed the most remarkable growth, followed by multi-shop while total fashion store showed a steady growth. Also, when it came to regional distribution, the dominant trade areas were different based on clothing type. Garosugil showed the widest variation in its yearly trend investigation, and Gangnam station also showed a substantial amount of growth. In other areas, there was no considerable change in the total number of shops, but increasing and decreasing markets had a complexity that depended on clothing types.

  • The MFFn(Mass First Flush) was analyzed for various rainy events(monitoring data from 2008 to 2009) in Transportation area(Highway, National road, Trunk road). Estimated MFFn using SWMM was evaluated by comparison with observed MFFn. MFFn was estimated by varying n-value from 10% to 90% on the rainy events. The n-value increases, MFFn is closed to '1'. As time passed, the rainfall runoff was getting similar to ratio of pollutants accumulation. The result of a measure of the strength of the linear relationship between observed data and expected data under model was good ($R^2$=0.89). Pollutants runoff loads by volume showed Highway 26.6%, National road 44.8%, Trunk road 35.0% at the MFF20(20% by total runoff). A case of MFF30, pollutants runoff loads by volume showed Highway 40.2%, National road 54.3%, Trunk road 46.8%. According to the results, Initial precipitation basis were Highway MFF30, National road MFF20, Trunk road MFF30 when the Non-Point source control facilities set up.

  • Forest roads are essential for forest resource management. This study investigated and compared forest road and road policy data in Korea and the United States to improve future forest road policies in Korea. As compared to the United States (9.5 m/ha), Korea has much lower forest road density (3.19 m/ha) and has been actively constructing new forest roads. The Korea Forest Service leads forest road policy in Korea by providing subsidies for new road construction in non-national forests. The budget for forest roads accounted for 9.1% of the total Korea Forest Service budget in 2010 - 2015 and 73.5% of it was used for new road construction. Korean forest road policies have been distinctively changed over the past decades; e.g., an increase in forest road mileage in the 1990s, an increase in forest road standards in the 2000s, and an increase in the mileage of higher standard roads in the 2010s. In comparison to Korea, the United States has focused on road maintenance and road decommissioning since 2001. The budget for forest roads accounted for 2.9% of the total USDA Forest Service budget in 2011 - 2016 and 82.2% of it was used for operations and maintenance. Our study results suggest that forest road policies in Korea should start focusing on road maintenance and decommissioning, if needed.

  • This paper is about utilizing magnetic sensor to measure magnetic signal and analyze the form of magnetic signal for vehicle detection. For magnetic sensor, MR sensor from Honeywell company was used, and Helmholtz coil of which 3 axis' length is 1.2 m was manufactured to check the capability of the sensor and estimate its ability to detect the magnetic field. Vehicle detection was performed in following steps: installing sensor in road lane and non-road lane; estimating magnetic field when the vehicle is run by the driver; and estimating magnetic field of 7 different vehicles with different sizes. Also, sensor was installed at SUV and small-sized vehicle's park and non-park area to analyze the form of magnetic field. Lastly, the form of magnetic field made by different parts of the vehicle was analyzed. Based on the analysis, the form of magnetic field's magnetic peak value was bigger for road lane than non-road lane, complicated form was useful to distinguish the road lane above the installed sensor and the location of the running car, and the types of vehicle could be sorted because the variance of the magnetic field was bigger for bigger size of the vehicle. Also, it was confirmed that the forms of vehicle in parts-by-parts estimates.
