  • In this paper we proposed a hierarchical ASM for real-time tracking of non-rigid objects. For tracking an object we used ASM for estimating object contour possibly with occlusion. Moreover, to reduce the processing time we used hierarchical approach for real-time tacking. In the next frame we estimated the initial feature point by using Kalman filter. We also added block matching algorithm for increasing accuracy of the estimation. The proposed hierarchical, prediction-based approach was proven to out perform the exiting non-hierarchical, non-prediction methods.

  • The hierarchical conference causes the data delay because the exchanged data between terminals in the conference go through the hierarchical structure. In this paper, we propose an algorithm which minimizes the average path distance between terminals in a non-incremental hierarchical conference, and which considers the computing resource. For terminals which want to join the ongoing hierarchical conference, our algorithm selects terminals that the new connection is possible among terminals in the conference with the computing resource consideration. Then, after all distance values between the selected terminals and terminals which want to join the ongoing hierarchical conference are computed, and the terminal-pair which have minimum distance value is selected, the ongoing hierarchical conference is extended with a connection of the terminal-pair which consists of a terminal among selected terminals and other terminal among terminals which want to join the ongoing hierarchical conference. This continues until all terminals are included in the conference. As the experimental results with the proposed non-incremental scheme, the hierarchical conference can be organized with 24% better performance than the earlier incremental scheme on the basis of average path distance between terminals.

  • The demand for naval spare parts is intermittent and erratic. This feature, referred to as non-normal demand, makes forecasting difficult. Hierarchical forecasting using an aggregated time series can be more reliable to predict non-normal demand than direct forecasting. In practice the performance of hierarchical forecasting is not always superior to direct forecasting. The relative performance of the alternative forecasting methods depends on the demand features. This paper analyses the influence of the demand features on the performance of the alternative forecasting methods that use hierarchical and direct forecasting. Among various demand features variability, kurtosis, skewness and equipment groups are shown to significantly influence on the performance of the alternative forecasting methods.

  • Let us assume that two different log-linear models are selected by various model selection methods. When these are non-hierarchical it is not easy to choose one of these models. In this paper the well-known Cox's statistic is applied to compare these non-hierarchical log-linear models. Since it is impossible to obtain the analytic solution about the problem we proposed a alternative method by extending Pesaran and pesaran's (1993) simulation approach. We find that the values of proposed test statistic and the estimates are very much stable with some empirical results.

  • Professor Daihyun Chung has recently presented an intriguing view of Ban-mal(non-honorific expressions) in Korean. He criticizes uses of Ban-mal, on the grounds that they presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures in human beings. Professor Chung also advocates ″a relational theory of Ban-mal″ according to which ascriptions of 'n-mal' should be relativized to the speaker-hearer relationship. He employs this view in showing that uses of Ban-mal indeed presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures in human beings I claim that Professor Chung has not shown the credibility of his relational theory of Ban-mal, and that this very view leads to an unintended and undesirable consequence. Moreover, 1 show that even if we assume that this view is true for the sake of an argument, he is not able to show that uses of Ban-mal indeed presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures. All he can show is rather that uses of 'Ban-mal'(a meta-linguistic expression) presuppose the existence of hierarchical structures. Finally, 1 conclude that what really presupposes the existence of hierarchical structures is the asymmetrical uses of Ban-mal and honorific expressions.

  • This study attempted quantitative analysis by space syntax on the plan of a non-hierarchical arrangement, which selected SANAA's work after Almere Stadt Theater, and analyzed the difference in the quantitative value of the non-hierarchical arrangement in plan that appears externally. The analysis results were as follows. First, SANAA's spaces with a non-hierarchical arrangement plan that appears externally showed a definite quantitative value difference, and had a hierarchical space difference in the plan that does not appear externally. Second, the spaces with a high integration value also had a high connectivity value, which is indicated by increasing the number of space openings using the method of giving hierarchy to the non-hierarchical arrangement plan or adjusting the size of the room or location to grant hidden hierarchy. Third, SANAA used exterior corridor rather than interior corridor in grid-type plan to solve the accessibility problem, and the open coat spaces between rooms provide natural lighting and ventilation and are used as equipment that controls the hidden hierarchy of space at the same time.

  • This paper presents an efficiency of various non-conforming (NC) modes in development of a series of new finite elements with the special emphasis on 4-node quadrilateral elements. The NC modes have been used as a key scheme to improve the behaviors of various types of new finite elements, i.e., Mindlin plate bending elements, membrane elements with drilling degrees of freedom, flat shell elements. The NC modes are classified into three groups according to the 'correction constants' of 'Direct Modification Method'. The first group is 'basic NC modes', which have been widely used by a number of researchers in the finite element communities. The basic NC modes are effective to improve the behaviors of regular shaped elements. The second group is 'hierarchical NC modes' which improve the behaviors of distorted elements effectively. The last group is 'higher order NC modes' which improve the behaviors of plate-bending elements. When the basic NC modes are combined with hierarchical or higher order NC modes, the elements become insensitive to mesh distortions. When the membrane component of a flat shell has 'hierarchical NC modes', the membrane locking can be suppressed. A number of numerical tests are carried out to show the positive effect of aforementioned various NC modes incorporated into various types of finite elements.

  • For estimating the error variance under the relative squared error loss in two-way analysis of variance models, we provide a class of hierarchical Bayes estimators and then derive a subclass of the hierarchical Bayes estimators, each member of which dominates the best multiple of the error sum of squares which is known to be minimax. We also identify a subclass of non-minimax hierarchical Bayes estimators.

  • Many clustering algorithms have been used in diverse fields. When we need to group given data set into clusters, many clustering algorithms based on similarity or distance measures are considered. Most clustering works have been based on hierarchical and non-hierarchical clustering algorithms. Generally, for the clustering works, researchers have used clustering algorithms case by case from these algorithms. Also they have to determine proper clustering methods subjectively by their prior knowledge. In this paper, to solve the subjective problem of clustering we make empirical comparisons of popular clustering algorithms which are hierarchical and non hierarchical techniques using Silhouette measure. We use silhouette information to evaluate the clustering results such as the number of clusters and cluster variance. We verify our comparison study by experimental results using data sets from UCI machine learning repository. Therefore we are able to use efficient and objective clustering algorithms.

  • Suppose we want to compare following non-hierarchical log-linear models, $H_0:f(x, heta inTheta_a)$ vs H_1:g(x, heta inTheta_eta); for; Theta_a,;Theta_etasubsetTheta;such;that;Theta_$\alpha$/ Theta_eta$. The goodness of fit test using the likelihood ratio test statistic for comparing these models could not be acceptable. By using the polyhedrons plots of Choi and Hong (1995), we propose a method to decide a better model between two non-hierarchical log-linear models $f(x: heta inTheta_a) and g(x: heta inTheta_eta)$.
