  • Non-destructive field tests of the concrete has achieved increasing acceptance for the evaluation of existing concrete structures. But the application of this test has not still accomplished to guarantee perfectly the durability of the concrete bridges in Korea. As two major testing methods, this paper recommends the proper empirical relationship between the rebound number together with the ultrasonic pulse velocity and the core strength. Also, this paper recommend the relationships as the aging and as the element.

  • This study is aimed to investigate the strength variation of fire-damaged reinforced concrete column with polypropylene by non-destructive test. It is studied to infer the recovery degree of residual strength of fire-damaged concrete. For measuring the surface hardness of RC columns, Schmidt hammer test is used. Testing is performed four-times: before fire test, directly after fire test, after 30 days and after 4 months.

  • The research significance of the paper is to identify the major properties of synthetic lightweight concrete that are affected by ASR expansion and to determine the extent and magnitude of the loss in these properties. Emphasis is also given to the use of non-destructive testing techniques ; Such as dynamic modulus of elasticity and ultrasonic pulse velocity, to examine whether these methods could be used to identify the initiation of expansion and the internal structural damage caused by ASR.

  • The general non-destructive inspection method for anchor bolts in Korea applies visual inspection and hammering inspection, but it is difficult to check corrosion or fatigue cracks of anchor bolts in the part included in the foundation or in the part where the nut and base plate are installed. In reality, objective investigation is difficult because inspection is affected by the surrounding environment and individual differences, so it is necessary to develop non-destructive inspection technology that can quantitatively estimate these defects. Inspection of the anchor bolts of domestic road facilities is carried out by visual inspection, and since the importance of anchor bolts such as bridge bearings and fall prevention facilities is high, the life span of bridges is extended through preventive maintenance by developing non-destructive testing technology along with existing inspection methods. Through the development of this technology, non-destructive testing of anchor bolts is performed and as a technology capable of preemptive/active maintenance of anchor bolts for road facilities, practical use is urgently needed. In this paper, the possibility of detecting defects in anchor bolts such as corrosion and cracks and reliability were experimentally verified by applying the ultrasonic test among non-destructive inspection techniques. When the technology development is completed, it is expected that it will be possible to realize preemptive/active maintenance of anchor bolts by securing source technology for improving inspection reliability.

  • In this paper, the concept of infrared thermography(IRT), the principle of measurement of IRT and how to set up the IR camera for the nondestructive testing are described in detail. Also, its utilization and non-destructive testing(NDT) diagnosis are reviewed. By performing the periodic non-touched WDT through the estimation of thermal patterns related with the temperature for the surface targeted, IRT can be applied to the early prevention of the device failure. For the diagnosis utilization, thermal imaging patterns obtained from IRT for heated blocks with internal defects were estimated through the lion-destructive method and discussed the way of IRT estimation from the analysis of characteristics between material defects and thermal imaging patterns.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this research is to find which technique, between the PAUT (Phased array ultrasonic test) that has been used widely in practice and RT (Radiographic test) that was used widely in the past, has the higher reliability as a non-destructive testing of welding points in water wall tubes. Methods: To evaluated the reliability of non-destructive testing, eleven test pieces that were fabricated intentionally, which have the most frequently occurred defect types in water wall tubes and then both the PAUT and RT were performed on those eleven test pieces to compare their reliability. Results: The differences of type of defect, length are occurred due to the characteristics of nondestructive testing. The RT could not detect the lack of fusion defect type in specimen #4 and #8 while PAUT could not detect the lateral crack and 1 mm size small porosity in specimen #11. Conclusion: It is concluded that applying both the RT and PAUT result the best reliability rather than applying only one test method, if it is possible, in nondestructive testing of weld water wall tube in thermal power plant boiler case.

  • When a concrete member is damaged by fire accident, it can lose its strength. And the degradation rate of losing its strength affected by many environmental conditions. But there is few research for equation for strength evaluation of fire-damaged concrete. Besides, it is impossible to destruct structural member from the building for the evaluation. So, I will suggest a new equation for strength evaluation of fire-damaged RC beam using non-destructive test. For this purpose, the researchers are exploring the performance of non-destructive testing methods using Ultrasonic test, Schmidt Hammer test and Coring test against fire damaged concrete specimen.

  • In this paper, we deal with the speckle noise reduction and parameter estimation of ultrasonic NDT(non-destructive test) signals obtained during weld inspection of piping. The overall approach consists of three major steps, namely, speckle noise analysis, proposition of wavelet domain AR(autoregressive) model and flaw detection by proposed model parameter. The data are first processed whereby signals obtained using vertical and angle beam transducer. Correlation properties of speckle noise are then analyzed using multiresolution analysis in wavelet domain. The parameter estimation curve obtained using the proposed model is classified a flaw in weld region where is contaminated by severe speckle noise and also clear flaw signal is obtained through CA-CFAR threshold estimator that is a nonlinear post-processing method for removing the noise from reconstructed ultrasonic signal.

  • The presence of crack-like defects in mechanical and structural elements produces failures during their service life that in some cases can be catastrophic. So, the early detection of the fatigue cracks is particularly important because they grow rapidly, with a propagation velocity that increases exponentially, and may lead to long out-of-service periods, heavy damages of machines and severe economic consequences. In this work, a non-destructive method for the detection and identification of elliptical cracks in shafts based on stress wave propagation is proposed. The propagation of a stress wave in a cracked shaft has been numerically analyzed and numerical results have been used to detect and identify the crack through the genetic algorithm optimization method. The results obtained in this work allow the development of an on-line method for damage detection and identification for cracked shaft-like components using an easy and portable dynamic testing device.
