  • Evaluating service lives of rubber materials at certain temperatures requires a destructive method (typically using elongation at break). In this study, a non-destructive method based on hardness change rate was proposed for evaluating the service life of chloroprene rubber (CR). Compared to the destructive method, this non-destructive method ensures homogeneity of CR specimens and requires a small number of samples. Thermal accelerated degradation test was conducted on the CR specimens at 55, 70, 85, 100, and 125℃, and the tensile strength, elongation at break, and hardness were measured. The results of the experiment were compared to those of the accelerated life evaluation method proposed in this study. Comparing the analyzed lives in the high temperature region (70, 85, 100, and 125℃), the difference between the service lives for the destructive method (using the elongation at break) and non-destructive method (using the hardness) was approximately 0.1 year. Therefore, it was confirmed that the proposed non-destructive evaluation method based on hardness changes can evaluate the actual life of CR under thermally accelerated degradation conditions.

  • The aim of the paper is to introduce the statistical definition of the specified compressive strength of the concrete to be used for safety evaluation of the existing structure in domestic practice and to present the practical method to obtain the specified strength by utilizing the non-destructive test data as well as the limited number of core test data. The statistical definition of the specified compressive strength of concrete in the design codes is reviewed and the consistent formulations to statistically estimate the specified strength for assessment are described. In order to prevent estimating an unrealistically small value of the specified strength due to limited number of data, it is proposed that the information from the non-destructive test data is combined to that of the minimum core test data. The the sample mean, standard deviation and total number of concrete test are obtained from combined test data. The proposed procedures are applied to an example test data composed of the artificial numerical values and the actual evaluation data collected from the bridge assessment reports. The calculation results show that the proposed statistical estimation procedures yield reasonable values of the specified strength for assessment by applying the non-destructive test data in addition to the limited number of core test data.

  • In order to prevent the possibility of mixing of metal powder during food grinding processing with the metal roll mill this study was conducted to develope the materials of ceramics roll as a substitute of gray cast iron mill. Since the ceramics is brittle material and can be broken easily by a crack, it was needed to develope engineering ceramics roll materials with high elastic modulus and fracture toughness. Adding 0∼50 wt% Al$_2$O$_3$as densification additives to porcelain body material and forming the ceramics an different condition, mechanical properties were evaluated. The material structure’s densification process was analyzed by SEM and XRD. The evaluation of the mechanical properties of ceramics roll materials were compared and analyzed by non-destructive test using Young’s modulus and destructive test using 3-point bending strength and fracture toughness. The results showed several correlative results. Porcelain body material with 40 wt% Al$_2$O$_3$content heated at 1,200$\^{C}$ for 5h was high bulk density of 2.77, Young’s modulus of 118.4Gpa, 3-point bending strength of 137 MPa and fracture toughness of 2.88 MPa$.$m$\^$$\sfrac{1}{2}$/ . After analyzing the relationship between non-destructive test and destructive test, the coefficient of determination was more than 0.9. Therefore, the evaluation of non-destructive test by ultrasonic was turned out to be feasible in evaluating the mechanical properties of ceramics.

  • Non-destructive test on the size and depth of cracks has been required for the safety evaluation of structures. Ultrasonic method based on laser techniques is one of the most popular non-destructive methods which overwhelm PZT based tests. In the present paper, ultrasonic was generated by high powered Q switching Nd:YAG pulse laser. Experiments were carried out using Fabry-Perot interferometer which was intensively discussed in the present study.

  • When a concrete member is damaged by fire accident, it can lose its strength. And the degradation rate of losing its strength affected by many environmental conditions. But there is few research for equation for strength evaluation of fire-damaged concrete. Besides, it is impossible to destruct structural member from the building for the evaluation. So, I will suggest a new equation for strength evaluation of fire-damaged RC beam using non-destructive test. For this purpose, the researchers are exploring the performance of non-destructive testing methods using Ultrasonic test, Schmidt Hammer test and Coring test against fire damaged concrete specimen.

  • The tensile properties of materials can be obtained just in accordance with conventional tensile testing methods which are described in several standards. However, the standard testing methods cannot be applicable due to the destructive testing procedure and specimen size requirement for some cases including on-service facility materials. Therefore, simple, non-destructive and advanced indentation technique was proposed. This test measures indentation load-depth curve during indentation and analyzes the mechanical properties related to deformation and fracture. In this paper, the research trend of non-destructive evaluation of tensile properties using advanced indentation system and its application fields are reviewed and discussed.

  • Compressive strength of recycled aggregate concrete was tested by the core and by the non-destructive testing. A prediction model of compressive strength considering the replacement level of recycled aggregate was suggested by multi-regression analysis and was compared with test results. Also, Test results showed that the ratio of compressive strength by core and non-destructive testing to actual was somewhat affected by the replacement level of recycled aggregate.

  • Concrete carbonation is a continuous and slow process from the outside to the inside, in which its penetration slows down with the increased depth of carbonation. In this paper, the results of the evaluation of the measurement of concrete carbonation depth using a non-destructive ultrasonic testing method are presented. According to the results, the relative nonlinear parameter caused more sensitivity in carbonation changes compared to Rayleigh's fuzzy velocity. Thus, the acoustic nonlinear parameter is expected to be applied as a quantitative index to recognize carbonation effects. In this research, combo diagrams were developed based on the results of ultrasonic testing and the experiment to determine carbonation depth using a phenolphthalein solution, which could be considered as instructions in the projects involving non-destructive ultrasonic test methods. The minimum and maximum accuracy of this method were 89% and 97%, respectively, which is a reasonable range for operational projects. From the analysis performed, some useful expressions are found by applying the regression analysis for the nonlinearity index and the carbonation penetration depth values as a guideline.

  • PURPOSES : This study is to evaluate moisture susceptibility of asphalt mixtures by using non-destructive impact wave and to determine durability so as to decrease the gap between before and after freezing in the future. METHODS : Using non-destructive impact wave, this study is to determine the dynamic modulus of asphalt specimen. Furthermore, the results obtained from two experiment accelerometers are used for the dynamic modulus determination. The dynamic moduli of specimens are compared with those of the freezing-thawing specimens. RESULTS : Test results showed that the dynamic modulus before freezing and thawing environment loads at each temperature dropped about 3.7% after the environmental loads. Furthermore, correlation analysis indicates that transition of dynamic modulus at each point is about 89.59%. CONCLUSIONS: Evaluation of asphalt mixtures using non-destructive impact wave has excellent repeatability and simple equipment for the test. Consequently, the method in the study will be useful for evaluating the characteristics of a various asphalt mixtures.

  • Measuring defects on the inside and on the surface of a steel structure is very important technology in order to predict the life span of the structure. In particular, a place with a high probability that it may contain defects is a welded part and it is very important to check defects in the part, absence/presence of non-uniform substances, its shape, and the location. Many non-destructive tests can be applied, but the ultrasonic flow detection test is widely used with some advantages. The ultrasonic flow detection test, however, cannot be applied when there is a problem by a contact medium between PZT and a specimen, in case of a small and complicated shape or a moving object or when the specimen is hot. In this study, to solve the problems of the contact ultrasonic flow detection test, the non-contact ultrasonic flow detection test for sending/receiving ultrasonic waves using lasers was described. I intended to develop a non-destructive detection system applying the laser application ultrasonic test to a steel structure by detecting the defects inside of and on the surface of the specimen.
