  • The frequency is an important operation parameter for the control, protection, and stability of a power system. The frequency as a key index of power quality can be indicative of system abnormal conditions and disturbances. Due to the sudden change in generation and loads or faults in power system, the frequency is supposed to deviate from its nominal value. It is essential that the frequency must be maintained very close to its nominal frequency. An accurate monitoring of the power frequency is essential to optimal operation and prevention for wide area blackout. As most conventional frequency estimation schemes are based on DFT filter, it has been pointed out that the gain error could cause defects when the frequency is deviated from nominal value. This paper presents an advanced frequency estimation technique using gain compensation to improve the performance of DFT filter based techniques. To evaluate performance of the proposed algorithm, the 765kV T/L system in Korea is simulated by EMTP-RV software. The proposed technique can reduce the gain error caused when the power system frequency deviates from nominal value.

  • One bottleneck of Bengali to Hindi transfer based machine translation system is the translation of suffixes of noun. The appropriate translation of a nominal suffix often depends on the semantic role of the corresponding noun chunk in the sentence. With the availability of a high performance Bengali morphological analyzer and a basic Bengali parser it is possible to identify the role of each noun chunk. This information may be used for building rules for translating the ambiguous nominal suffixes. As there are some similarities between the uses of Bengali and Hindi nominal suffixes we find that the rules may be identified by linguistically analyzing corpus data. In this paper, we identify rules for the ambiguous four Bengali nominal suffixes from corpus data and evaluate their performances. This set of rules is able to resolve a majority of the nominal suffix ambiguities in Bengali to Hindi transfer based machine translation system. Using the rules, we are able to translate 98.17% Bengali nouns correctly which is much better than the baseline ILMT system's accuracy of 62.8%.

  • This paper proposes a necessary and sufficient condition of convergence in the $L_2$-norm sense for a feedback-based iterative learning control (ILC) system including a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) linear time-invariant (LTI) plant. It is shown that the convergence conditions for a nominal plant and an uncertain plant are equal to the nominal performance condition and the robust performance condition in the feedback control theory, respectively. Moreover, no additional effort is required to design an iterative learning controller because the performance weighting matrix is used as an iterative learning controller. By proving that the least upper bound of the $L_2$-norm of the remaining tracking error is less than that of the initial tracking error, this paper shows that the iterative learning controller combined with the feedback controller is more effective to reduce the tracking error than only the feedback controller. The validity of the proposed method is verified through computer simulations.

  • This paper presents a research work for the evaluation of the nominal flexural strength of composite girders in positive bending region. Current predicting equations for the nominal flexural strength of composite girders in the 2012 version of the Korea Bridge Design Codes based on Limit State Design Method are able to apply for the composite girders with conventional structural steels. For applying composite girders with high yield strength steels of HSB800 as well as HSB600, there is a need for improving the current predicting equations. In order to investigate the nominal flexural strength of composite girders, previous research works are carefully reviewed and parametric study using a moment-curvature analysis program is conducted to evaluate the ultimate moment capacity and the ductility of a wide range of composite girders. Based on the results of the parametric study, less conservative nominal flexural strength design equations are proposed for conventional composite girders. In addition, new design equations for predicting the nominal flexural strength of composite girders with HSB600 and HSB800 high-performance steels are provided.

  • Robots in various types carry and assemble parts through repeatedly and accurately moving to stored locations by combining linear motions. And, linear systems are used in orthogonal axes of robots and driven via ball screws, such as 2-axis cartesian coordinate robot in this paper. This paper presents the effect of the linear motion guide that is used in $2^{nd}$ axis in 2-axis cartesian coordinate robot. Some simulation results show that the linear motion guide influence greatly in robot performance such as the nominal life of linear guide. When use LM guide that have capacity near in $2^{nd}$ axis, this paper show that the nominal life on LM block of $1^{st}$ axis increases 37.4% and that the specification of $2^{nd}$ axis LM guide influences greatly the nominal life of $1^{st}$ axis LM block.

  • In this paper, a finite impulse response(FIR) fixed-lag smoother is proposed for discrete-time nonlinear systems. If the actual state trajectory is sufficiently close to the nominal state trajectory, the nonlinear system model can be divided into two parts: The error-state model and the nominal model. The error state can be estimated by adapting the optimal time-varying FIR smoother to the error-state model, and the nominal state can be obtained directly from the nominal trajectory model. Moreover, in order to obtain more robust estimates, the linearization errors are considered as a linear function of the estimation errors. Since the proposed estimator has an FIR structure, the proposed smoother can be expected to have better estimation performance than the IIR-structured estimators in terms of robustness and fast convergence. Additionally the proposed method can give a more general solution than the optimal FIR filtering approach, since the optimal FIR smoother is reduced to the optimal FIR filter by setting the fixed-lag size as zero. To illustrate the performance of the proposed method, simulation results are presented by comparing the method with an optimal FIR filtering approach and linearized Kalman filter.

  • Eccentrically braced frames (EBFs) often use conventional steel with medium yield strength. This system requires structural members with large cross-sections for well seismic behavior, which leads to increased material costs. In eccentrically braced frames with high strength steel combination (HSS-EBFs), links use Q345 steel (specified nominal yield strength 345 MPa), braces use Q345 steel or high strength steel while other structural members use high strength steel (e.g., steel Q460 with the nominal yield strength of 460 MPa or steel Q690 with the nominal yield strength of 690 MPa). For this approach can result in reduced steel consumption and increased economic efficiency. Several finite element models of both HSS-EBFs and EBFs are established in this paper. Nonlinear hysteretic analyses and nonlinear time history analyses are conducted to compare seismic performance and economy of HSS-EBFs versus EBFs. Results indicate that the seismic performance of HSS-EBFs is slightly poorer than that of EBFs under the same design conditions, and HSS-EBFs satisfy seismic design codes and reduce material costs.

  • Analysis: of the propulsion performance considering ship motion in waves is an important factor for the efficient operation of a ship. The interaction between the propeller and the free surface due to the ship motion in waves has a significant influence on the propulsion performance. However, most recent studies regarding the hydrodynamic performance of ships in waves focus on the added resistance, and experimental and numerical data on the propulsion performance considering the ship motion in waves are very rare. In this study, a numerical investigation of the nominal wake in regular head waves is performed for a KVLCC2 model ship for the fully-loaded condition. Phase-averaged wake fields for one period are compared with experimental data measured using Stereo PIV, showing good agreement. The effect of the ship motion on the characteristics of the wake field and the axial velocity in the propeller plane are investigated while varying the wave length.
