The present study compared characteristics of Korean nominal particles (occurrence, error, error patterns) of ten 5- to 6-year-old Korean-English simultaneous bilingual children with ten Korean monolingual children. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney U test and Spearman Rank Correlation and by qualitative analysis. Results were (1) bilingual children showed significantly lower frequency based on the number of occurrence of nominal particles per utterance. (2) The error percentage of adverbial markers was significantly higher for bilingual children. (3) Error patterns of bilingual children showed a higher percentage of in-case substitution and double use error. These findings suggest that Korean-English simultaneous bilingual children have a different Korean nominal particles development from Korean monolingual children.
A relationship between microstructure and ferromagnetic resonance of Co/Ag multilayers has been studied in as-deposited and annealed multilayers iwth ultrathin (dCo < 1 nm) Co layers. Depending on the nominal thickness of Co Co/Ag multilayers represent a system of fine magnetic particles (dCo < 0.4 nm) or discontionuous layered structure (dCo/0.5 nm). FMR data has been interpreted in the framework of a odel of interacting fine particles exhibiting superparamagnetic behavior. Changes in the FMR spectra upon annealing have been attributed to the growth of the Co particles and to a transition from the fcc to hcp atomic structure of the highly (111) textured Co particles.
We have fabricated superconductor ceramics by chemical process. A high Tc superconductorwith a nominal composition of $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}Ca_{2}Cu_{3}O_y$ was prepared by the organic metal salts method. Experimental results suggest that the intermediate phase formed before the formation of the superconductor phase may be the most important factor. During the sintering, doped $Ag_{2}O$ was converted to Ag particles which were finely dispersed in superconductor samples.
Objectives This study aims to evaluate the size-dependent toxicity of spherical silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to an endemic benthic organism, Glyptotendipes tokunagai. Methods Ag nanoparticles of three nominal sizes (50, 100, and 150 nm) capped with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP-Ag NPs) were used. Their physicochemical properties, acute toxicity (48 hours), and bioaccumulation were measured using third instar larvae of G. tokunagai. Results The aggregation and dissolution of PVP-Ag NPs increased with exposure time and concentration, respectively, particularly for 50 nm PVP-Ag NPs. However, the dissolved concentration of Ag ions was not significant compared with the median lethal concentration value for $AgNO_3$ (3.51 mg/L). The acute toxicity of PVP-Ag NPs was highest for the smallest particles (50 nm), whereas bioaccumulation was greatest for the largest particles (150 nm). However, larger PVP-Ag NPs were absorbed and excreted rapidly, resulting in shorter stays in G. tokunagai than the smaller ones. Conclusions The size of PVP-Ag NPs significantly affects their acute toxicity to G. tokunagai. In particular, smaller PVP-Ag NPs have a higher solubility and stay longer in the body of G. tokunagai, resulting in higher toxicity than larger PVP-Ag NPs.
This paper describes a hybrid cleaning method of silicon wafer combining nano-bubble and ultrasound to remove sub-micron particles and contaminants with minimal damage to the wafer surface. In the megasonic cleaning process of semiconductor manufacturing, the cavitation induced by ultrasound can oscillate and collapse violently often with re-entrant jet formation leading to surface damage. The smaller size of cavitation bubbles leads to more stable oscillations with more thermal and viscous damping, thus to less erosive surface cleaning. In this study, ultrasonic energy was applied to the wafer surface in the DI water to excite nano-bubbles at resonance to remove contaminant particles from the surface. A patented nano-bubble generator was developed for the generation of nano-bubbles with concentration of 1×109 bubbles/ml and nominal nano-bubble diameter of 150 nm. Ultrasonic nano-bubble technology improved a contaminant removal efficiency more than 97% for artificial nano-sized particles of alumina and Latex with significant reduction in cleaning time without damage to the wafer surface.

A cascade impactor is a multistage impaction device used to separate airborne particles into aerodynamic size classes. A micro-orifice impactor uses micro-orifice nozzles to extend the cut sizes of the lower stages to as small as 0.05 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter without resorting to low pressures or creating excessive pressure drops across the impactor stages. In this work, the phenomenon of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles was experimentally investigated for a commercial micro-orifice uniform deposit impactor (MOUDI). It was observed, using an optical microscope, that the micro-orifice nozzles of the final stages were partially clogged due to particle deposition during the aerosol sampling. Therefore the pressure drops across the nozzles were higher than the nominal values given by the manufacturer. To examine the effect of particle clogging in micro-orifice nozzles, the particle collection efficiency of the MOUDI was evaluated using an electrical method for fine particles with diameters in the range of 0.1-0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The monodisperse liquid dioctyl sebacate (DOS) particles were used as test aerosols. A faraday cage was employed to measure the low-level current of the charged particles upstream and downstream of each stage. It was found that the collection efficiency curves shifted to correspond to smaller orifice sizes, and the 50-% cutoff sizes were much smaller than those given by the manufacturer for the three stages with nozzles less than 400 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ in diameter.

This paper describes the combustion characteristics of aluminized paraffin fuel on the contents of micron-sized aluminum particles with nominal diameters of $8{\mu}m$. Aluminized paraffin fuels with mixture ratio of aluminum 0 wt%, 5 wt% and 10 wt% as fuel and GOx(Gaseous Oxygen) as oxidizer were used to perform the experiments. The experimental investigations were performed on the regression rate, the chamber pressure and the combustion efficiency. Increasing a content of micron-sized aluminum particles, the results of regression rate, chamber pressure and combustion efficiency show minor increase compared to those without particles.

Laser-induced plume and laser-target interaction during pulsed laser deposition are demonstrated for a lead zirconate titanate (PZT). A KrF excimer laser (wavelength 248nm) was used and the laser was pulsed at 20Hz, with nominal pulse width of 20ns. The laser fluence was~$16J/cm^2,$ with 100mJ per pulse. The laser-induced plasma plume for nanosecond laser irradiation on PZT target has been investigated by optical emission spectra using an optical multichannel analyzer(OMA) and by direct observation of the plume using an ICCD high speed photography. OMA analysis showed two distinct ionic species with different expansion velocities of fast or slow according to their ionization states. The ion velocity of the front surface of the developing plume was about $10^7$cm/sec and corresponding kinetic energy was about 100eV. ICCD photograph showed another kind of even slower moving particles ejected from the target. These particles considered expelled molten parts of the target. SEM morphologies of the laser irradiated targets showed drastic melting and material removal by the laser pulse, and also showed the evidence of the molten particle ejection. The physics of the plasma(plume) formation and particle ejection has been discussed.
The technique for calibrating standard particles larger than 1 $\mu$m by using an optical array sizing method has been established. The system consists of an optical microscope with transmission light source, a CCD camera, and a computer equipped with a frame grabber. The center distance between two spheres located at both ends of a row which consists of N spheres is measured in terms of pixel numbers, and divided by (N-1) to obtain the average pixel numbers per particle. This value is multiplied by length conversion constant, which has been determined in advance, to obtain the mean diameter of polystylene spheres. The length conversion constant is found from the microscopic image of calibrated standard stage micrometer plate. In order to reduce error in finding center positions of the scale and particles in the image, a software filter which dilates bright (or dark) object has been used. Spheres having nominal size of 1, 2, 3, 5, and 10$\mu$m were measured, and the maximum deviation of the measured mean diameter valus from their certified values was 0.7%. Standard particles which is larger than 1 $\mu$m can be calibrated by this method with measuredment uncertainy (k=2) lees than 1.53%.

Water content of $PM_{2.5}$ (particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than or equal to a nominal $2.5{\mu}m$) was estimated by using a gas/aerosol equilibrium model, SCAPE2, for the particles collected at Seoul and Gosan, Korea. From measured and analyzed characteristics of the particles, the largest difference between Seoul and Gosan is the proportions of total ammonia (t-$NH_3$=gas phase $NH_3$+particle phase ${NH_4}^+$), total nitric acid (t-$HNO_3$=gas phase $HNO_3$+particle phase ${NO_3}^-$) and sulfuric acid ($H_2SO_4$). Even though both sites have sufficient t-$NH_3$ to neutralize acidic species such as $H_2SO_4$, t-$HNO_3$, and t-HCl (total chloric acid=gas phase HCl+particle phase $Cl^-$), equivalent fraction of t-$NH_3$ and t-$HNO_3$ are higher at Seoul and $H_2SO_4$ is higher at Gosan. Based on the modeling result, it is identified that the $PM_{2.5}$ at Seoul is more hygroscopic than Gosan if the meteorological conditions are the same. To reduce water content of $PM_{2.5}$, and thus, mass concentration, control measures for ammonia and nitrate reduction are needed for Seoul, and inter-governmental cooperation is required for Gosan.
